  • Barns teaterskapande : En ämnesdidaktisk studie av drama och teater i kulturskolan
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this thesis is children’s theatre making in the Swedish School of Arts (Kulturskolan), which involves the creating work that children do on their own when they are asked to craft dramatic scenes without relying on a script or a story. Despite the fact that this is a common way of producing theatre in the Swedish School of Arts, little research has been done on the collective process when it is controlled by the children themselves. This thesis explores what children are actually doing when they collectively develop their own scene and what they need to master to make it comprehendible. The thesis is based on two empirical studies – a field study and a learning study – carried out in three drama groups with children aged 9–11 at a School of Arts in Sweden. In the field study, I observed a drama group during the process of creating their own play. By applying ethnographic methods and multimodal interaction analysis combined with theories about children's creative process and connections between play and drama/theatre the study explores what children do when they are set free to make scenes in small groups. The result shows a speedy, multi-layered, collaborative process in which they all, in different ways, responsively participate in designing roles and events through interactive verbal and bodily improvisation. The field study was followed by a learning study to explore how the multifaceted, simultaneous, and interactive activity of creating dramatic scenes could be specified and articulated as subject-specific knowledge. For this purpose, two other drama groups were chosen, and the subsequent study was conducted in collaboration with their respective drama teachers. A total of six lessons were designed and videotaped. The empirical material was analysed by using phenomenography. The result shows the skills divided into four subthemes: making the story logic, creating meaningful roles, coordinating the big picture, and adding relevant events. The co-creation of characters and events involves the ability to both talk about ideas and try them out through acting. When they create a scene, they use strategies similar to those children often use when role-playing; they alternate between being in and out of character, in and out of fiction. What essentially distinguishes theatre making in this sense from children’s ordinary role-play is the concern for and awareness of an imagined audience. Taking on the perspective of an audience includes the ability to design roles and events to make the play understandable from the outside: what I call aesthetic triangulation.

  • Drama in Education for Sustainability : Becoming Connected through Embodiment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Education & the Arts. - 1529-8094. ; 21:19, s. 1-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we argue that drama can serve as an interconnecting method for climate change education. In this study, we elaborate the practice of drama and participation experiences through three drama workshops: 1) process drama work on the global, social, and individual aspects of climate change, 2) outdoor drama practice on relations to nature, and 3) reflections through drama practice. The human dimension of the sustainability issues, conditions of interdependence, and collaboration were explored and manifested through the drama practices, which created frames for embodied, creative and cognitive dialogues between people with different perspectives. Being differently-as experienced through the embodied, collective, and creative practices of drama-seemed to promote experiences of interconnectedness, widen perspectives of sustainability, and motivate acting differently.

  • Assistant nurses’ descriptions of signs of dying among older people in nursing homes
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Vård i Norden. - : SAGE Publications. - 0107-4083 .- 1890-4238. ; 33:3, s. 20-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In Sweden, assistant nurses are the group of professionals who have a great deal of contact with older, dying persons in nursing homes. They have substantial experience in this area. It is therefore important that their voices are heard about their experience of how they identify that an older person is dying.Aim: The purpose was to describe assistant nurses’ experiences of signs of dying among older people in nursing homes.Method: A qualitative manifest content analysis was used. Four interviews were performed with eight experienced assistant nurses, individually or in groups, from two nursing homes.Findings: The result is characterized by the assistant nurses’ descriptions of both subtle and manifest signs that an older person is dying. The analysis led to two categories: “the older person expresses insight” and “the older person’s body changes”. The first of these mainly involved observations of psychosocial changes, while the second mainly contained observations of bodily changes. Conclusion: The clinical experiences as the assistant nurses achieve give valuable incitements for creating good palliative care. The assistant nurses must be seen as a significant part of the care team. They should be offered continuous education and support regarding palliative care in order to develop their skills and practical knowledge.

  • Utilization of palliative care principles in nursing home care : educational interventions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Palliative & Supportive Care. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1478-9515 .- 1478-9523. ; 13:6, s. 1745-1753
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: This study is part of the overarching PVIS (Palliative Care in Nursing Homes) project aimed at building competence in palliative care for nursing home staff. Our objective was to describe nursing home staff's attitudes to competence-building programs in palliative care. Method: Three different programs were developed by specialist staff from three local palliative care teams. In all, 852 staff at 37 nursing homes in the greater Stockholm area participated. Staff from 7 nursing homes participated in 11 focus-group discussions. Variation in size between the seven nursing homes initiated purposeful selection of staff to take part in the discussions, and descriptive content analysis was used. Results: The results suggest that staff reported positive experiences as they gained new knowledge and insight into palliative care. The experiences seemed to be similar independent of the educational program design. Our results also show that staff experienced difficulties in talking about death. Enrolled nurses and care assistants felt that they carried out advanced care without the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge. Further, the results also suggest that lack of support from ward managers and insufficient collaboration and of a common language between different professions caused tension in situations involved in caring for dying people. Significance of results: Nursing home staff experienced competence-building programs in palliative care as useful. Even so, further competence is needed, as is long-term implementation strategies and development of broader communication skills among all professions working in nursing homes.
