  • Thermoelastic damping effect analysis in micro flexural resonator of atomic force microscopy
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Mathematical Modelling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0307-904X .- 1872-8480. ; 38:11-12, s. 2716-2733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the design of high-Q micro/nano-resonators, dissipation mechanisms may have damaging effects on the quality factor (Q). One of the major dissipation mechanisms is thermoelastic damping (TED) that needs an accurate consideration for prediction. Aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of TED on the vibrations of thin beam resonators. In particular, we will focus on cantilever beam resonator used in atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM resonator is actually a cantilever with a spring attached to its free end. The end spring is considered to capture the effect of surface stiffness between tip and sample surface. The coupled governing equations of motion of thin beam with consideration of TED effects are derived. In general, there are four elastic equations that are coupled with thermal conduction equation. Based on accurate assumptions, these equations are simplified and the various boundary conditions have been used in order to validate the computational procedure. In order to accurately determine TED effects, the coupled thermal conduction equation is solved for the temperature field by considering three-dimensional (3-D) heat conduction along the length, width and thickness of the beam. Weighted residual Galerkin technique is used to obtain frequency shift and the quality factor of the thin beam resonator. The obtained results for quality factor, frequency shift and sensitivity change due to thermo-elastic coupling are presented graphically. Furthermore, the effects of beam aspect ratio, stress-free temperature on the quality factor and the influence of the surface stiffness on the frequencies and modal sensitivity of the AFM cantilever with and without considering thermo-elastic damping effects are discussed.

  • Pre-administration of turmeric prevents methotrexate-induced liver toxicity and oxidative stress
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. - : BioMed Central. - 1472-6882. ; 15:246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Methotrexate (MTX) is an antimetabolite broadly used in treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. MTX-induced hepatotoxicity limits its application. We investigated hepatoprotective effects of turmeric in MTX-induced liver toxicity. Methods: All experiments were performed on male Wistar albino rats that were randomly divided into six groups. Group one received saline orally for 30 days (control group), groups two and three received turmeric extract (100, 200 mg/kg respectively) orally for 30 days, group four received single dose, of MTX IP at day 30, groups five and six received turmeric extract 100 and 200 mg/kg orally respectively for 30 days and single dose of methoterxate IP (20 mg/kg) at day 30. Four days after MTX injection animals were sacrificed and evaluated. Blood ALT and AST (indicators of hepatocyte injury), ALP and bilirubin (markers of biliary function), albumin (reflect liver synthetic function) as well as the plasma TAS concentration (antioxidant defenses) were determined. The cellular antioxidant defense activities were examined in liver tissue samples using SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px for the oxidative stress, and MDA for lipid peroxidation. In addition, liver damage was evaluated histopathologically. Results: MTX significantly induced liver damage (P less than 0.05) and decreased its antioxidant capacity, while turmeric was hepatoprotective. Liver tissue microscopic evaluation showed that MTX treatment induced severe centrilobular and periportal degeneration, hyperemia of portal vein, increased artery inflammatory cells infiltration and necrosis, while all of histopathological changes were attenuated by turmeric (200 mg/kg). Conclusion: Turmeric extract can successfully attenuate MTX-hepatotoxicity. The effect is partly mediated through extracts antinflammatory activity.

  • Barcoding and species delimitation of Iranian freshwater crabs of the Potamidae family (Decapoda Brachyura)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12, s. 8288-8288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Freshwater ecosystems are under multiple threats in modern times such as water extraction for human consumption, industries and agricultural activities, water contamination and habitat destruction for example. At the same time the biodiversity of these ecosystems are often poorly studied, especially in arid countries such as Iran. In this work, we study one of the ecologically important members of Iranian freshwater fauna, freshwater crab species of the genus Potamon. Here, we barcoded the different populations occurring in the country and delimited the species to allow for a better understanding of their distribution and taxonomy. In this study, we evaluated the taxonomical statues of Potamon species in Iran using genetic data. In addition, we created the first barcoding reference for Iranian freshwater crabs, which is an important resource for future environmental and conservation studies.

  • Variants in ELL2 influencing immunoglobulin levels associate with multiple myeloma.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 6, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by an uninhibited, clonal growth of plasma cells. While first-degree relatives of patients with MM show an increased risk of MM, the genetic basis of inherited MM susceptibility is incompletely understood. Here we report a genome-wide association study in the Nordic region identifying a novel MM risk locus at ELL2 (rs56219066T; odds ratio (OR)=1.25; P=9.6 × 10(-10)). This gene encodes a stoichiometrically limiting component of the super-elongation complex that drives secretory-specific immunoglobulin mRNA production and transcriptional regulation in plasma cells. We find that the MM risk allele harbours a Thr298Ala missense variant in an ELL2 domain required for transcription elongation. Consistent with a hypomorphic effect, we find that the MM risk allele also associates with reduced levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and G (IgG) in healthy subjects (P=8.6 × 10(-9) and P=6.4 × 10(-3), respectively) and, potentially, with an increased risk of bacterial meningitis (OR=1.30; P=0.0024).

  • Identification of multiple risk loci and regulatory mechanisms influencing susceptibility to multiple myeloma
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 9:1, s. 3707-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have transformed our understanding of susceptibility to multiple myeloma (MM), but much of the heritability remains unexplained. We report a new GWAS, a meta-analysis with previous GWAS and a replication series, totalling 9974 MM cases and 247,556 controls of European ancestry. Collectively, these data provide evidence for six new MM risk loci, bringing the total number to 23. Integration of information from gene expression, epigenetic profiling and in situ Hi-C data for the 23 risk loci implicate disruption of developmental transcriptional regulators as a basis of MM susceptibility, compatible with altered B-cell differentiation as a key mechanism. Dysregulation of autophagy/apoptosis and cell cycle signalling feature as recurrently perturbed pathways. Our findings provide further insight into the biological basis of MM.

  • 3DLaneNAS : Neural Architecture Search for Accurate and Light-Weight 3D Lane Detection
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Artificial Neural Networks and Machine Learning – ICANN 2022. - Cham : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. - 9783031159183 ; , s. 404-415
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lane detection is one of the most fundamental tasks for autonomous driving. It plays a crucial role in the lateral control and the precise localization of autonomous vehicles. Monocular 3D lane detection methods provide state-of-the-art results for estimating the position of lanes in 3D world coordinates using only the information obtained from the front-view camera. Recent advances in Neural Architecture Search (NAS) facilitate automated optimization of various computer vision tasks. NAS can automatically optimize monocular 3D lane detection methods to enhance the extraction and combination of visual features, consequently reducing computation loads and increasing accuracy. This paper proposes 3DLaneNAS, a multi-objective method that enhances the accuracy of monocular 3D lane detection for both short- and long-distance scenarios while at the same time providing a fair amount of hardware acceleration. 3DLaneNAS utilizes a new multi-objective energy function to optimize the architecture of feature extraction and feature fusion modules simultaneously. Moreover, a transfer learning mechanism is used to improve the convergence of the search process. Experimental results reveal that 3DLaneNAS yields a minimum of 5.2% higher accuracy and ≈ 1.33 × lower latency over competing methods on the synthetic-3D-lanes dataset.
