  • Introducing the Hoshin Kanri strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Management Decision. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0025-1747 .- 1758-6070. ; 54:10, s. 2507-2523
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the basic principles and introduction of the Hoshin Kanri (HK) strategic management system, as related to the management practices in manufacturing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approach – This paper reports the findings from the introduction of HK to four manufacturing SMEs by following an assistance support-based research approach where teams of coaches and researchers observed and learned from the introduction phase. The overall design of the project is theory building and learning oriented.Findings – It is suggested that the successful introduction of a strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs has to balance the inherent level of formalization therein, with the individual company’s management practices. Based on HK as the strategic management system, pDCA is proposed as an alternative approach to the introduction, matching differences in management practices.Research limitations/implications – The explorative nature of this research provides room for subsequent studies by elaborating the knowledge on the introduction of strategic management systems in SMEs.Practical implications – Awareness of the existing managerial practices is essential when introducing a new strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs. Such awareness is the starting point of customizing the introduction, so that proper levels of engagement and flexibility can be balanced with increasing systematic formalization, and optimized adequacy.Originality/value – Following an assistance support-based research approach the result of this research project is summarized in the iterative pDCA model emphasizing engagement and flexibility when incrementally introducing strategic management systems in SMEs. This model addresses a hitherto under-researched topic in strategic management.

  • Automatic Extraction and Manual Validation of Hierarchical Patent Terminology
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: NORDTERM 16. Ontologier og taksonomier.. - Copenhagen, Denmark : Copenhagen Business School Press. - 9788799457700 ; , s. 249-262
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several methods can be applied to create a set of validated terms from existing documents. In this paper we describe an automatic bilingual term candidate extraction method, and the validation process used to create a hierarchical patent terminology. The process described was used to extract terms from patent texts, commissioned by the Swedish Patent Office with the purpose of using the terms for machine translation. Information on the correct linguistic inflection patterns and hierarchical partitioning of terms based on their use are of utmost importance. The process contains six phases, 1) Analysis of the source material and system configuration; 2) Term candidate extraction; 3) Term candidate filtering and initial linguistic validation; 4) Manual validation by domain experts; 5) Final linguistic validation; and 6) Publishing the validated terms.Input to the extraction process consisted of more than 91 000 patent document pairs in English and Swedish, 565 million words in English and 450 million words in Swedish. The English documents were supplied in EBD SGML format and the Swedish documents were supplied in OCR processed scans of patent documents. After grammatical and statistical analysis, the documents were word-aligned. Using the word-aligned material, candidate terms were extracted based on linguistic patterns. 750 000 term candidates were extracted and stored in a relational database. The term candidates were processed in 8 months resulting in 181 000 unique validated term pairs that were exported into several hierarchically organized OLIF files.

  • PERson-centredness in hypertension management using information technology (PERHIT): a protocol for a randomised controlled trial in primary health care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Blood Pressure. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 0803-7051 .- 1651-1999. ; 29:3, s. 149-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: For primary health care (PHC), hypertension is the number one diagnosis for planned health care visits. The treatment of high blood pressure (BP) and its consequences constitutes a substantial economic burden. In spite of efficient antihypertensive medications, a low percentage of patients reach a well-controlled BP. The PERson-centredness in Hypertension management using Information Technology (PERHIT) Study is a multicentre randomised controlled trial. PERHIT is designed to evaluate the effect of supporting self-management on systolic blood pressure by the use of information technology in Swedish primary health care. Materials and Methods: After inclusion, 900 patients from 36 PHC centres are randomised to two groups. In the intervention group, patients are provided with a self-management support system including a home-BP monitor and further requested to perform self-reports and measure BP every evening for eight consecutive weeks. In the control group, patients receive treatment as usual. Results: The primary outcome will be the change in systolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension. In addition, person-centredness, daily life activities, awareness of risk and health care costs will also be evaluated. Conclusion: The results of this randomised controlled trial with assessment of blood pressure and same-day self-reports will provide patients a tool to understand the interplay between blood pressure and lifestyle applicable to primary health care. The self-management support system may be of importance for improved adherence to treatment and persistence to treatment recommendations.

  • Fertilizer Type Affects Stable Isotope Ratios of Nitrogen in Human Blood Plasma─Results from Two-Year Controlled Agricultural Field Trials and a Randomized Crossover Dietary Intervention Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0021-8561 .- 1520-5118. ; 70:11, s. 3391-3399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The stable nitrogen isotope ratio δ15N is used as a marker of dietary protein sources in blood. Crop fertilization strategies affect δ15N in plant foods. In a double-blinded randomized cross-over dietary intervention trial with 33 participants, we quantified the effect of fertilizer type (conventional: synthetic fertilizer and organic: animal or green manure) on δ15N in blood plasma. At study baseline, plasma δ15N was +9.34 ± 0.29‰ (mean ± standard deviation). After 12 days intervention with a diet based on crops fertilized with animal manure, plasma δ15N was shifted by +0.27 ± 0.04‰ (mean ± standard error) compared to synthetic fertilization and by +0.22 ± 0.04‰ compared to fertilization with green manure (both p < 0.0001). Accordingly, differences in the δ15N values between fertilizers are propagated to the blood plasma of human consumers. The results indicate a need to consider agricultural practices when using δ15N as a dietary biomarker.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : SPRINGER. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 53:3, s. 547-553
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2019 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research has been awarded to Professor Boyan Jovanovic at New York University in the USA. Boyan Jovanovic has developed pioneering research that advances our understanding of the competitive dynamics between incumbent firms and new entrants, entrepreneurial learning and selection processes, and the importance of entrepreneurship for the economy. Key perspectives in his research are that the entrepreneur makes employment choices based on the comparative advantage of his or her skills and that entrepreneurial firms are vehicles of technological change and knowledge diffusion that influence industry dynamics and, in turn, economic growth.

  • A module-based analytical strategy to identify novel disease-associated genes shows an inhibitory role for interleukin 7 Receptor in allergic inflammation.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: BMC systems biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1752-0509. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The identification of novel genes by high-throughput studies of complex diseases is complicated by the large number of potential genes. However, since disease-associated genes tend to interact, one solution is to arrange them in modules based on co-expression data and known gene interactions. The hypothesis of this study was that such a module could be a) found and validated in allergic disease and b) used to find and validate one ore more novel disease-associated genes. RESULTS: To test these hypotheses integrated analysis of a large number of gene expression microarray experiments from different forms of allergy was performed. This led to the identification of an experimentally validated reference gene that was used to construct a module of co-expressed and interacting genes. This module was validated in an independent material, by replicating the expression changes in allergen-challenged CD4+ cells. Moreover, the changes were reversed following treatment with corticosteroids. The module contained several novel disease-associated genes, of which the one with the highest number of interactions with known disease genes, IL7R, was selected for further validation. The expression levels of IL7R in allergen challenged CD4+ cells decreased following challenge but increased after treatment. This suggested an inhibitory role, which was confirmed by functional studies. CONCLUSION: We propose that a module-based analytical strategy is generally applicable to find novel genes in complex diseases.

  • High temperature tribology of TiAlN PVD coating sliding against 316L stainless steel and carbide-free bainitic steel
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tribology International. - : Elsevier. - 0301-679X .- 1879-2464. ; 159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reciprocating sliding wear tests were performed on TiAlN coating against 316L stainless steel and carbide-free bainitic steel at temperatures of 40, 400 and 800 oC. The results indicate that material transfer is more pronounced for the softer stainless steel at lower temperatures but at 800 oC, carbide-free bainite exhibits relatively more material transfer. Friction coefficient of stainless steel increases when temperature increases. However, for carbide-free bainite, there is a reduction in friction coefficient at elevated temperatures. This can be attributed to formation of an easily sheared iron oxide layer at elevated temperatures. In case of stainless steel, generation of a thin tribofilm containing aluminium oxide and oxidised transferred material can protect the TiAlN coating against wear at 800 oC.
