  • Developing innovative organisations : using action-orientated gender research
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Promoting innovation. - Stockholm : Vinnova. - 9789186517717 ; , s. 310-327
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lack of gender awareness affects not only the conditions under which people work, itis also an obstacle to organisations’ ability to produce, develop and organise for innovation. This article presents an approach called action-orientated gender research, amerger of two theoretical perspectives: a) the doing-gender perspective, with its understandingof gender as formed in on-going relational activities and b) learning theorywithin the action research tradition, which focuses on reflection, learning and especiallyreflective learning for transformation. Gender theory and learning theory are combinedinto joint learning processes in networks of participants from different organisationswithin innovation systems. This makes it possible to uncover taken-for-grantedassumptions and gendered power relations which constrain the development of newinnovative possibilities in organisations. This article will present basic theoretical characteristic of the action-orientatedgender research approach, plus examples of how we have worked with this approachin a network of middle managers. Moreover, we will elaborate on the important considerationswe have discovered for organising transformative learning aimed at developinggender-aware, innovative organisations. The empirical material in the articlecomes from two meetings. One in which co-research was conducted with two managersworking in the same organisation. The other meeting took place one month laterwhen all the managers in the Gender network were present. During this second meeting, observations from the earlier co-research were presented and discussed using theconcentric circle method.

  • Evaluating gas chromatography with a halogen-specific detector for the determination of disinfection by-products in drinking water
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Pollution Research. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 0944-1344 .- 1614-7499. ; 26, s. 7305-7314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The occurrence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water has become an issue of concern during the past decades. The DBPs pose health risks and are suspected to cause various cancer forms, be genotoxic and have negative developmental effects. The vast chemical diversity of DBPs makes comprehensive monitoring challenging. Only few of the DBPs are regulated and included in analytical protocols. In this study, a method for simultaneous measurement of 20 DBPs from five different structural classes (both regulated and non-regulated) was investigated and further developed for 11 DBPs using solid phase extraction and gas chromatography coupled with a halogen specific detector (XSD). The XSD was highly selective towards halogenated DBPs, providing chromatograms with little noise. The method allowed detection down to 0.05 µg/L and showed promising results for the simultaneous determination of a range of neutral DBP classes. Compounds from two classes of emerging DBPs, more cytotoxic than the “traditional” regulated DBPs, were successfully determined using this method. However, haloacetic acids (HAAs) should be analyzed separately as some HAA methyl esters may degrade giving false positives of trihalomethanes (THMs). The method was tested on real water samples from two municipal waterworks where the target DBP concentrations were found below the regulatory limits of Sweden.

  • Influence of allochthonous dissolved organic matter on pelagic basal production in a northerly estuary
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science. - : Elsevier. - 0272-7714 .- 1096-0015. ; 204, s. 225-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria are key groups at the base of aquatic food webs. In estuaries receiving riverine water with a high content of coloured allochthonous dissolved organic matter (ADOM), phytoplankton primary production may be reduced, while bacterial production is favoured. We tested this hypothesis by performing a field study in a northerly estuary receiving nutrient-poor, ADOM-rich riverine water, and analyzing results using multivariate statistics. Throughout the productive season, and especially during the spring river flush, the production and growth rate of heterotrophic bacteria were stimulated by the riverine inflow of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In contrast, primary production and photosynthetic efficiency (i.e. phytoplankton growth rate) were negatively affected by DOC. Primary production related positively to phosphorus, which is the limiting nutrient in the area. In the upper estuary where DOC concentrations were the highest, the heterotrophic bacterial production constituted almost 100% of the basal production (sum of primary and bacterial production) during spring, while during summer the primary and bacterial production were approximately equal. Our study shows that riverine DOC had a strong negative influence on coastal phytoplankton production, likely due to light attenuation. On the other hand DOC showed a positive influence on bacterial production since it represents a supplementary food source. Thus, in boreal regions where climate change will cause increased river inflow to coastal waters, the balance between phytoplankton and bacterial production is likely to be changed, favouring bacteria. The pelagic food web structure and overall productivity will in turn be altered. (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • Towards a healhty diet: from nutrition recommendations to dietary advice
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Food & Nutrition. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2976 .- 1748-2984. ; 51:1, s. 31-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scientific knowledge regarding dietary fat, carbohydrate and protein, and food for the youngest and oldest people, was presented by key scientists in the field at a symposium arranged in Uppsala on 14 December 2006. The quality of fat and carbohydrates, rather than the total amount, was emphasized. It was more difficult, however, to reach conclusions about the preferred type of dietary protein. Recent dietary recommendations, main activities and key messages to the public in the Nordic countries, and a 5 year programme to decrease salt intake in Sweden were also presented. Some practical aspects on how to implement the recommendations in the population were highlighted. In many aspects the Nordic countries join together in similar simplified advice to the population. The symposium is summarized in this report.

  • Waterworks-specific composition of drinking water disinfection by-products
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science. - Cambridge : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2053-1400 .- 2053-1419. ; :5, s. 861-872
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reactions between chemical disinfectants and natural organic matter (NOM) upon drinking water treatment result in formation of potentially harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). The diversity of DBPs formed is high and a large portion remains unknown. Previous studies have shown that non-volatile DBPs are important, as much of the total toxicity from DBPs has been related to this fraction. To further understand the composition and variation of DBPs associated with this fraction, non-target analysis with ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) was employed to detect DBPs at four Swedish waterworks using different types of raw water and treatments. Samples were collected five times covering a full year. A common group of DBPs formed at all four waterworks was detected, suggesting a similar pool of DBP precursors in all raw waters that might be related to phenolic moieties. However, the largest proportion (64–92%) of the assigned chlorinated and brominated molecular formulae were unique, i.e. were solely found in one of the four waterworks. In contrast, the compositional variations of NOM in the raw waters and samples collected prior to chemical disinfection were rather limited. This indicated that waterworks-specific DBPs presumably originated from matrix effects at the point of disinfection, primarily explained by differences in bromide levels, disinfectants (chlorine versus chloramine) and different relative abundances of isomers among the NOM compositions studied. The large variation of observed DBPs in the toxicologically relevant non-volatile fraction indicates that non-targeted monitoring strategies might be valuable to ensure relevant DBP monitoring in the future.

  • Mapping Youth Participation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Youth Reserch Symposium, Youth Moves – Voices – Spaces – Subjectivities, 15th–17th of June 2016, Trollhättan, Sweden.

    • Mapping youth participation Björn Andersson och Susanne Liljeholm Hansson SESSION 16: Spaces and styles of participation Mapping youth participation This abstract relates to a joint open session Spaces and Styles of Participationtogether with Walther, Nyman-Kurkiala and Schwanenfluegel. One important empirical task for the PARTISPACE project is to map how young people engage in participatory activities in the eight cities that take part in the study. To know what we are looking for we have to have some kind of definition of what youth participation means. The general starting point is that participation should be understood as a lived and situated practice. As a more concrete guide for the collection of data we distinguish between formal, non-formal and informal forms of participation. The formal level is about elections, membership in political parties and taking part in youth parliaments or councils. These are activities that often are labelled participation . The non-formal setting is about associations and youth organizations, often supported by various youth work efforts. Finally, the informal level is about all kinds of youth activities, often not considered as participatory, but which nonetheless contain elements that affect young peoples relation to society. Methods that will be used for gathering data are interviews, observations, case studies, group discussions and reconstructing participation biographies. There will also be action research projects carried out by young people themselves. During the seminar we will present the work done in Gothenburg this far. We will discuss and reflect upon the theoretical and methodological approaches used in the study. Does the mapping work or do we miss important aspect of young people s participation due to deficiencies in the design of the study?

  • Evaluation of Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and postal survey in follow-up of children and adolescents discharged from psychiatric outpatient treatment : a randomized controlled trial
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: SpringerPlus. - : Springer. - 2193-1801. ; 3:77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systematic evaluation of child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient treatment is important but time-consuming. The aim of this paper was to study whether Interactive Voice Response (IVR) is a more effective method than a questionnaire sent by post when following up outpatient treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry. Eighty patients were recruited from a child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient unit in Sweden. One parent of each of the patients was randomized to complete the BCFPI follow-up form, using either IVR (n = 40) or postal survey (n = 40) one month after discharge. The response rate for complete answers was 65% in the IVR group and 38% in the postal survey group (p = 0.014). There was less need for reminders in the IVR group (p = 0.000). IVR is a promising and cost-effective method for evaluating evidence-based treatment in child and adolescent psychiatric care.
