  • Recruitment failure of coastal predatory fish in the Baltic Sea coincident with an offshore ecosystem regime shift
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ICES Journal of Marine Science. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1054-3139 .- 1095-9289. ; 67:8, s. 1587-1595
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dominant coastal predatory fish in the southwestern Baltic Sea, perch and pike, have decreased markedly in abundance during the past decade. An investigation into their recruitment at 135 coastal sites showed that both species suffered from recruitment failures, mainly in open coastal areas. A detailed study of 15 sites showed that areas with recruitment problems were also notable for mortality of early-stage larvae at the onset of exogenous food-intake. At those sites, zooplankton abundance predicted 83 and 34% of the variation in young of the year perch and pike, respectively, suggesting that the declines were caused by recruitment failure attributable to zooplankton food limitation. Incidences of recruitment failure match in time an offshore trophic cascade that generated massive increases in planktivorous sprat and decreases in zooplankton biomass in the early 1990s. Therefore, sprat biomass explained 53% of the variation in perch recruitment from 1994 to 2007 at an open coastal site, where three-spined stickleback also increased exponentially after 2002. The results indicate that the dramatic change in the offshore ecosystem may have propagated to the coast causing declines of the dominating coastal predators perch and pike followed by an increase in the abundance of small-bodied fish.

  • Influence of nickel content on machinability of a hot-work tool steel in prehardened condition
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197 .- 0261-3069. ; 32:2, s. 706-715
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, the influence of nickel content on the machinability of a prehardened hot-work tool steel was investigated. The machinability with varying nickel content from 1 to 5 wt% was characterized in end milling and drilling by evaluating tool life, cutting forces, and tool/chip interface temperature.Nickel content showed to have a positive effect on the machinability of the hot-work tool steel; with increasing nickel content in the steel, the longer tool life was reached in end milling and drilling operations. Machining the higher nickel containing steels generated lower cutting forces and tool/workpiece interface temperature. In addition, less adhesive wear and built-up edge formation were observed on the tools. The difference in the steel machinability was discussed in terms of their microstructure and mechanical properties. Increasing nickel content tends to decrease the carbon in the martensite and to retain a fine distribution of small primary carbides. It resulted in a reduction in yield strength with increasing nickel content related to the cutting force reduction and machinability improvement.

  • Consistent differences in protein distribution along the longitudinal axis in symptomatic carotid atherosclerotic plaques.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Biochemical and biophysical research communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-2104 .- 0006-291X. ; 401:4, s. 574-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identifying proteins associated with a complicated atherosclerotic plaque phenotype would provide potential biomarkers for detection of patients at elevated risk for clinically overt disease. We hypothesized that the protein content of carotid atherosclerotic tissue differs between complicated segments located in the internal carotid artery (ICA) and more stable segments in the common carotid artery (CCA). Using differential proteomics, we aimed to identify proteins differentially expressed between these segments of symptomatic carotid plaques. Ten snap-frozen human endarterectomies were divided into ICA and CCA segments and compared using two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This study setup allowed pair-wise comparison of complicated and more stable atherosclerotic tissue from the same individual. We identified 19 proteins with differential distribution between ICA and CCA segments. Among the proteins more abundant in ICA were S100A10, ferritin light chain and fibrinogen. Among the proteins more abundant in CCA were ApoE, actin and l-lactate dehydrogenase B. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that S100A10 was expressed in endothelial cells, in clusters of macrophages and foam cells, and co-localized with the urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor, uPAR. In conclusion, the results support the concept of comparing segments within plaques. The identified proteins constitute potential markers of complicated atherosclerotic lesions. The previously reported function of S100A10 to regulate plasmin activity affecting both angiogenesis and macrophage invasion, together with our observation of its accumulation in complicated plaque segments, warrants further studies of its potential role as a drug target for treatment of advanced atherosclerosis.

  • Increased vascularization of shoulder regions of carotid atherosclerotic plaques from patients with diabetes.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of vascular surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1097-6809 .- 0741-5214. ; 54:5, s. 1324-1331.e5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increased vascularization is considered an important contributing factor for plaque vulnerability. Microvascular proliferative disease in patients with diabetes results in renal damage and visual loss. We assessed the hypothesis that vascularization in carotid atherosclerotic tissue is increased in diabetic patients, especially in the critical shoulder regions of the plaque.

  • Slightly elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) concentrations are associated with carotid atherosclerosis in women with varying degrees of glucose tolerance.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Angiology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1940-1574 .- 0003-3197. ; 61:8, s. 793-801
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined whether high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) ≥2.0 mg/L was associated with increased intima-media thickness (IMT), plaque burden, and plaque echolucency in carotid arteries. Women (n = 635) from a population sample of 64-year-old females with varying degrees of glucose tolerance underwent risk factor assessment, measurement of hsCRP, and ultrasound examinations of the carotid arteries. Participants with hsCRP levels ≥2.0 mg/L had elevated carotid bulb IMT independently of other cardiovascular risk factors compared with those with hsCRP <2.0 mg/L. The participants with plaques in the highhsCRP group had larger total plaque area compared to those with plaque in the lower hsCRP group. Plaque echolucency did not differ between groups. High-sensitivity CRP levels ≥2.0 mg/L were accompanied by elevated IMT in the carotid bulbs independently of other cardiovascular risk factors. Total plaque area was larger among women with plaques in the high hsCRP group versus the lower hsCRP group.
