  • Family of Isoreticular Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Coordination and Hydrogen Bonds in [M[Co(ethylenediamine)(oxalato)2]2]
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 10:4, s. 1971-1978
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From the parent compound [Ca[Co(ethylenediamine)(oxalato)2]2]n . 4H2O, 1, a series of framework compounds was prepared via the soluble sodium salt and crystal growth with the divalent metal ions Cd2+, Mn2+, and Sr2+, (2-4). These compounds have the same general formula [M[Co(ethylenediamine)(oxalato)2]2]n . xH2O, and they all form the same four- and eight-connected 3D net having scu topology (and are thus isoreticular) with water filled channels of variable size running in one direction of the crystals. However, they crystallize in two different space groups, the chiral P21) (3, 4, and the low temperature form of 1) and the noncentrosymmetric P-4 (1 and 2). The potential voids upon water removal are 18-20% of the unit cell. Preliminary gas sorption measurements at 298 K and 8 bar show substantial CO2 and N2O uptake (12-14% and 15-16% by mass, respectively), while the H2 uptake was 0.18%, a relatively high value considering the low pressure and high temperature.

  • Improving the preoperative classification of adnexal masses as benign or malignant by second-stage tests
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology. - : Wiley. - 1469-0705 .- 0960-7692. ; 37:1, s. 100-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective The aim of this study was to establish when a second-stage diagnostic test may be of value in cases where a primary diagnostic test has given an uncertain diagnosis of the benign or malignant nature of an adnexal mass. Methods The diagnostic performance with regard to discrimination between benign and malignant adnexal masses for mathematical models including ultrasound variables and for subjective evaluation of ultrasound findings by an experienced ultrasound examiner was expressed as area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity. These were calculated for the total study population of 1938 patients with an adnexal mass as well as for sub-populations defined by the certainty with which the diagnosis of benignity or malignancy was made. The effect of applying a second-stage test to the tumors where risk estimation was uncertain was determined. Results The best mathematical model (LR1) had an AUC of 0.95, sensitivity of 92% and specificity of 84% when applied to all tumors. When model LR1 was applied to the 10% of tumors in which the calculated risk fell closest to the risk cut-off of the model, the AUC was 0.59, sensitivity 90% and specificity 21%. A strategy where subjective evaluation was used to classify these 10% of tumors for which LR1 performed poorly and where LR1 was used in the other 90% of tumors resulted in a sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 90%. Applying subjective evaluation to all tumors yielded an AUC of 0.95, sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 93%. Sensitivity was 81% and specificity 47% for those patients where the ultrasound examiner was uncertain about the diagnosis (n = 115; 5.9%). No mathematical model performed better than did subjective evaluation among the 115 tumors where the ultrasound examiner was uncertain. Conclusion When model LR1 is used as a primary test for discriminating between benign and malignant adnexal masses, the use of subjective evaluation of ultrasound findings by an experienced examiner as a second-stage test in the 10% of cases for which the model yields a risk of malignancy closest to its risk cut-off will improve specificity without substantially decreasing sensitivity. However, none of the models tested proved suitable as a second-stage test in tumors where subjective evaluation yielded an uncertain result. Copyright (C) 2010 ISUOG. • Extreme heterogeneity in sex chromosome differentiation and dosage compensation in livebearers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : NATL ACAD SCIENCES. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 116:38, s. 19031-19036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Once recombination is halted between the X and Y chromosomes, sex chromosomes begin to differentiate and transition to heteromorphism. While there is a remarkable variation across clades in the degree of sex chromosome divergence, far less is known about the variation in sex chromosome differentiation within clades. Here, we combined whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing data to characterize the structure and conservation of sex chromosome systems across Poeciliidae, the livebearing Glade that includes guppies. We found that the Poecilia reticulata XY system is much older than previously thought, being shared not only with its sister species, Poecilia wingei, but also with Poecilia picta, which diverged roughly 20 million years ago. Despite the shared ancestry, we uncovered an extreme heterogeneity across these species in the proportion of the sex chromosome with suppressed recombination, and the degree of Y chromosome decay. The sex chromosomes in P. reticulata and P. wingei are largely homomorphic, with recombination in the former persisting over a substantial fraction. However, the sex chromosomes in P. picta are completely nonrecombining and strikingly heteromorphic. Remarkably, the profound degradation of the ancestral Y chromosome in P. picta is counterbalanced by the evolution of functional chromosome-wide dosage compensation in this species, which has not been previously observed in teleost fish. Our results offer important insight into the initial stages of sex chromosome evolution and dosage compensation.

  • Anionic zinc-trimesic acid MOFs with unusual topologies: Reversible hydration studies
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; 39:11, s. 2869-2874
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reaction of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) with ZnSO4 center dot 6H(2)O in a DMF-water solution afforded two new metal-organic frameworks [Zn-6(mu(3)-OH)(2)(BTC)(4)(DMF)(2.5)(H2O)(2)]center dot[Zn(H2O)(3)(DMF)(3)]center dot 3.1H(2)O (1) and Zn-2(HBTC)(BTC)(H2O)(3)]center dot DMA center dot 3H(2)O (2). Both compounds are thermally stable and can be prepared reproducibly. Rehydration experiments on compound 2 demonstrate reversible dehydration and rehydration while 1 rehydrates to a different crystalline material. Network analysis revealed a binodal (3,6)-net for 1 and a (3,5)-net for 2, both rare topologies.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Crystallographica Section B: Structural Science. - : International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). - 0108-7681 .- 1600-5740. ; 68:5, s. 528-535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reaction of 5-nitroisophthalic acid (H(2)NIA) with Gd(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O in DMF afforded three new metal-organic frameworks: [Gd(NIA)(1.5)(DMF)(2)]center dot DMF (I), [Gd-2(NIA)(3)(DMF)(4)]center dot xH(2)O (II) and [Gd-4(NIA)(6)(DMF)(5.5)(H2O)(3)]center dot 4DMF center dot H2O (III). These compounds can be prepared through a variety of methods. Compounds (I) and (II) are more reproducibly formed than compound (III). Network analysis revealed (I) to have a (4(12).6(3))-pcu topology, while (II) displays a (4(2).8(4))(4(2).8(4))-pts topology. Compound (III) was found to present the uncommon 4,5,6T11 topological net, which combines aspects of both the pcu and pts topologies. The short symbol of this net is (4(4).6(2))(4(6).6(4))(2)(4(8).6(6).8).

  • Imaging in gynecological disease (7): clinical and ultrasound features of Brenner tumors of the ovary
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology. - : Wiley. - 1469-0705 .- 0960-7692. ; 40:6, s. 706-713
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives To describe clinical and ultrasound features of Brenner tumors of the ovary. Methods In this retrospective study, the databases of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) studies and one tertiary center were searched to identify patients who had undergone an ultrasound scan before surgery for an adnexal mass that proved to be a Brenner tumor. Twenty-eight patients with 29 Brenner tumors were included, most of which had been collected within the framework of the IOTA studies. An experienced ultrasound examiner reviewed available ultrasound images (available for 14 tumors), searching for a pattern specific to Brenner tumors. Results Most patients were postmenopausal and asymptomatic. Twenty-four (83%) tumors were benign, two (7%) were borderline and three (10%) were malignant. Most benign tumors (17/24, 71%) contained solid components and manifested no or minimal blood flow on Doppler examination (19/24, 79%). Information about calcifications was available for 15 benign tumors, and in 13 (87%) calcifications were present. The five borderline and invasively malignant tumors contained solid components less often than did the benign ones (3/5, 60%) and were more richly vascularized on Doppler examination. Information about calcifications was available for four borderline or invasively malignant tumors, and in three (75%) calcifications were present. Conclusion We failed to demonstrate ultrasound features specific to Brenner tumors. A prospective study is needed to determine if ultrasound features of calcifications can discriminate between Brenner tumors and other types of ovarian tumor. Copyright (c) 2012 ISUOG.
