    • Low costN-bromosuccinimide (NBS) was applied as an effective p-type dopant in 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD), an important hole transport material (HTM) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). At the optimum doping concentration, the hole mobility, conductivity, stability, and various performances of the devices were significantly improved, particularly the hole mobility increased by more than 3.5 times from 1.39 × 10−4cm2V−1s−1to 4.92 × 10−4cm2V−1s−1. This dopant prompted the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSC device from 16.12% to 19.24% (0.1 cm2, AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2) with high stability.

  • The evolution of luminous red nova AT 2017jfs in NGC 4470

    • We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the intermediate-luminosity optical transient AT 2017jfs. At peak, the object reaches an absolute magnitude of M-g = 15.46 +/- 0.15 mag and a bolometric luminosity of 5.5 x 10(41) erg s(-1). Its light curve has the double-peak shape typical of luminous red novae (LRNe), with a narrow first peak bright in the blue bands, while the second peak is longer-lasting and more luminous in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. During the first peak, the spectrum shows a blue continuum with narrow emission lines of H and Fe II. During the second peak, the spectrum becomes cooler, resembling that of a K-type star, and the emission lines are replaced by a forest of narrow lines in absorption. About 5 months later, while the optical light curves are characterized by a fast linear decline, the NIR ones show a moderate rebrightening, observed until the transient disappears in solar conjunction. At these late epochs, the spectrum becomes reminiscent of that of M-type stars, with prominent molecular absorption bands. The late-time properties suggest the formation of some dust in the expanding common envelope or an IR echo from foreground pre-existing dust. We propose that the object is a common-envelope transient, possibly the outcome of a merging event in a massive binary, similar to NGC4490-2011OT1.

    • Zinc oxide (ZnO) as a multi-function semiconductor is widely known for photocatalysis and electronic applications but exceptionally new in Solid State Ionics. In this study, a new semiconducting-ionic conductor is reported for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) applications by composing ZnO with an ionic conductor La/Pr co-doped CeO2 (LCP) in various mass ratios. The prepared composites acting as membranes are sandwiched between two Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2-δ (NCAL) electrodes to construct fuel cells. A remarkable maximum power output of 1055 mW cm−2 is attained along with a high open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.04 V at 550 °C by the fuel cell using an optimal composition of 7LCP-3ZnO. The electrical properties of the composites as a function of LCP/ZnO ratio are studied through EIS measurements and polarization curves. It has been found that the composite of 7LCP-3ZnO exhibits a higher ionic conductivity than other composite samples at 475–550 °C, while possessing both high electronic and ionic conduction. Our further investigation also verifies the appreciable protonic conduction in LCP-ZnO, suggesting that the developed composite is a triple O2-/H+/e− conducting material. Additionally, rectification characteristic of the best-performance cell is also measured to interpret the high OCVs and power outputs of LCP-ZnO fuel cells.

  • Comparison of hypoxia among four river-dominated ocean margins: The Changjiang (Yangtze), Mississippi, Pearl, and Rhone rivers

    • We examined the occurrence of seasonal hypoxia (O-2 < 2 mg l(-1)) in the bottom waters of four river-dominated ocean margins (off the Changjiang, Mississippi, Pearl and Rhone Rivers) and compared the processes leading to the depletion of oxygen. Consumption of oxygen in bottom waters is linked to biological oxygen demand fueled by organic matter from primary production in the nutrient-rich river plume and perhaps terrigenous inputs. Hypoxia occurs when this consumption exceeds replenishment by diffusion, turbulent mixing or lateral advection of oxygenated water. The margins off the Mississippi and Changjiang are affected the most by summer hypoxia, while the margins off the Rhone and the Pearl rivers systems are less affected, although nutrient concentrations in the river water are very similar in the four systems. Spring and summer primary production is high overall for the shelves adjacent to the Mississippi, Changjiang and Pearl (1-10g C m(-2) d(-1)), and lower off the Rhone River (< 1 g C m(-2) d(-1)), which could be one of the reasons of the absence of hypoxia on the Rhone shelf The residence time of the bottom water is also related to the occurrence of hypoxia, with the Mississippi margin showing a long residence time and frequent occurrences of hypoxia during summer over very large spatial scales, whereas the East China Sea (ECS)/Changjiang displays hypoxia less regularly due to a shorter residence time of the bottom water. Physical stratification plays an important role with both the Changjiang and Mississippi shelf showing strong thermohaline stratification during summer over extended periods of time, whereas summer stratification is less prominent for the Pearl and Rhone partly due to the wind effect on mixing. The shape of the shelf is the last important factor since hypoxia occurs at intermediate depths (between 5 and 50 m) on broad shelves (Gulf of Mexico and ECS). Shallow estuaries with low residence time such as the Pearl River estuary during the summer wet season when mixing and flushing are dominant features, or deeper shelves, such as the Gulf of Lion off the Rhone show little or no hypoxia.   • PYY-Dependent Restoration of Impaired Insulin and Glucagon Secretion in Type 2 Diabetes following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

    • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a weight-reduction procedure resulting in rapid resolution of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The role of pancreatic islet function in this restoration of normoglycemia has not been fully elucidated. Using the diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat model, we demonstrate that RYGB restores normal glucose regulation of glucagon and insulin secretion and normalizes islet morphology. Culture of isolated islets with serum from RYGB animals mimicked these effects, implicating a humoral factor. These latter effects were reversed following neutralization of the gut hormone peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY) but persisted in the presence of a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor antagonist. The effects of RYGB on secretion were replicated by chronic exposure of diabetic rat islets to PYY in vitro. These findings indicate that the mechanism underlying T2D remission may be mediated by PYY and suggest that drugs promoting PYY release or action may restore pancreatic islet function in T2D.
