  • Walking in the Jungle with a Machete : ICT Leaders' Perspectives on User-Centred Systems Design
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Behavior and Information Technology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0144-929X .- 1362-3001. ; 41:6, s. 1230-1244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has established that leaders in information and communication technology (ICT) are crucial for establishing a user-centred systems design perspective in ICT for work-related tasks. This paper therefore describes the perspectives of 18 ICT leaders in three kinds of leadership roles (managers, project leaders and specialists) in order to understand their views of user-centred systems design concerning ICT. It uses the concept of technological frames of reference to analyse three domains: technology-in-use, technology strategy and nature of technology. The results show that many specialists see user involvement as a critical factor in successfully establishing new information and communication technologies, but that these systems are currently built around the needs of management rather than end users. Looking forward, all three relevant social groups are optimistic about how ICT will become more user-centred and more strategically aligned in the future. However, changes in ICT are described as extremely energy-consuming and difficult – akin to ‘walking in the jungle with a machete’. Finally, we discuss the relevance of technological frames and present some implications for the successful establishment of user-centred system design as a perspective in organisations.

  • What brings women into ehealth? : Women's career trajectories in digital transformations in health care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on e-Health.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital transformation of health care services is addressed world-wide in order to more efficiently meet the patients’ information and health care needs. However, little is known about the people working with this transformation, where two traditionally gendered fields meet; health care and IT. While work with digitalization generally is dominated by men, digitalization of health care services involves a large number of women. This case study explores the career trajectories of women working with the digital transformation of eHealth services. Who are the women in this eHealth project, and how did they come to working with this digital transformation? The analysis shows different types of trajectories that brought the women into eHealth transformations: The first illustrating women who were pushed into working with eHealth by their job descriptions, the second showing women using eHealth as an escape route from something else, and the last trajectory showing how women stumbled across eHealth and decided to stay on. This has implications for the educational system, and points to the need for being able to study computer science later in life. It also calls for a better understanding of what drives women in transformation processes.

  • Worlds Apart - Doctors’ Technological Frames and Online Medical Records
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: INTERACT 2015 adjunct proceedings. - Bamberg : University of Bamberg Press. - 9783863093525 - 9783863093532 ; , s. 357-367
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability of individuals to access and use their online medical records serves as one of the cornerstones of national efforts to increase patient empowerment and improve health outcomes. However, the launch of online medical records in Uppsala County, Sweden, has been criticized by the medical profession and the local doctors’ union. The aim of this paper is therefore to present the results from an exploratory study where interviews with two oncologists are analysed and discussed based on the theory of Technological Frames and Patient Empowerment. The results indicate that medical doctors have different assumptions and perspectives that affect their use of technology and how they view patient empowerment in everyday clinical work.

  • A framework for writing learning agreements
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proc. 46th ASEE/IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 9781509017904
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active learning is a popular concept for motivating learning. Learning agreements are one strategy towards this goal. They can be used to aid the students to take ownership of their learning and in becoming more active in a course. Learning Agreements are especially useful tools for scaffolding learning in courses with a focus on developing the professional competencies of students, such as in Open Ended Group Projects, Work Integrated Learning or other authentic learning contexts. Such educational contexts are complex and we have found it necessary to scaffold student learning using agreements based on professional competencies. This has led to a pedagogical framework, which has found successful application in a number of contexts. This framework has been built based on discussions with students, and has involved the development of a supporting wiki which contains descriptions of the different professional competencies involved in the learning agreement. The IT based framework has been iteratively developed together with the students taking the course in the fall of 2015. The development and assessment of this framework is contrasted in the context of two courses using learning agreements, one (in Sweden) with a focus on development of professional competencies and the other (in New Zealand) addressing a mix of professional competencies and subject knowledge in a work integrated learning setting.

  • Collaborative technologies in global engineering : New competencies and challenges
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International journal of engineering education. - 0949-149X. ; 31:1, s. 267-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educational institutions face many challenges in closing the gap between what is currently offered through academic engineering curricula and what is expected by society in general and industry in particular. There are many aspects to these challenges and here we address needs that are specific to global professionals by investigating the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for mediating and using Collaborative Technologies (CT) in an Open Ended Group Project (OEGP) within a global setting. We discuss these needs as framed by relevant theoretical frameworks for collaboration and learning (including Collaborative knowledge building and Collaborative Technology Fit), mapped using empirical data from a course setting involving global collaboration between two universities (one in the United States and one in Sweden). The paper concludes with a commentary on competencies beyond discipline specific technical skills and presents recommendations, based upon this research, for developing students’ proficiency in both mediating and using CTs in OEGP courses. These recommendations are followed by an outline of key areas for future research.
