  • Asymmetric Free-Hand Interaction on a Large Display and Inspirations for Designing Natural User Interfaces
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Symmetry. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-8994. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hand motion sensing-based interaction, abbreviated as ‘free-hand interaction’, provides a natural and intuitive method for touch-less interaction on a large display. But due to inherent usability deficiencies of the unconventional size of the large display and the kinematic limitations of the user’s arm joint movement, a large display-based free-hand interaction is suspected to have different performance across the whole areas of the large display. To verify this, a multi-directional target pointing and selection experiment was designed and conducted based on the ISO 9241-9 evaluation criteria. Results show that (1) free-hand interaction in display areas close to the center of the body had a higher accuracy than that in peripheral-body areas; (2) free-hand interaction was asymmetric at the left side and the right side of the body. More specifically, left-hand interaction in the left-sided display area was more efficient and accurate than in the right-sided display area. For the right-hand interaction, the result was converse; moreover, (3) the dominant hand generated a higher interaction accuracy than the non-dominant hand. Lessons and strategies are discussed for designing user-friendly natural user interfaces in large displays-based interactive applications.

  • Cation field-strength effects on ion irradiation-induced mechanical property changes of borosilicate glass structures
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of The American Ceramic Society. - 0002-7820 .- 1551-2916. ; 106:10, s. 5766-5780
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine the impact of the glass network-modifier cation field strength (CFS) on ion irradiation-induced mechanical property changes in borosilicate (BS) glasses for the ternary M2O-B2O3-SiO2 systems with M = {Na, K, Rb} and the quaternary [0.5M((2))O-0.5Na(2)O]-B2O3-SiO2 systems with M = {Li, Na, K, Rb Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba}. B-11 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on the as-prepared BS glasses yielded the fractional population of four-coordinated B species (B-[4]) out of all {B-[3], B-[4]} groups in the glass network, along with the fraction of B-[4]-O-Si linkages out of all B-[4]-O-Si/B bonds. Both parameters correlated linearly with the (average) CFS of the M+ and/or {M(2)+, Na+} cations. Both the nanoindentation-derived hardness and Young's modulus values of the glasses reduced upon their irradiation by Si2+ ions, with the property deterioration decreasing linearly with increasing Mz+ CFS, that is, for higher Mz+center dot center dot center dot O interaction strength. The irradiation damage of the glass network also increased linearly with the fraction of B-[4]-O-Si linkages, which are the second weakest in the structure after the Mz+center dot center dot center dot O bonds. Our results underscore the advantages of employing BS glasses with high-CFS cations for enhancing the radiation resistance for nuclear waste storage.

  • Unraveling Enyne Bonding via Dehydrogenation-Hydrogenation Processes in On-Surface Synthesis with Terminal Alkynes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials Interfaces. - : WILEY. - 2196-7350.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On-surface reactions of terminal alkynes in ultrahigh vacuum have attracted widespread attention due to their high technological promise. However, employing different precursors and substrate materials often intricate reaction schemes appear far from being well-understood. Thus, recent investigations of alkyne coupling on noble metal surfaces suggest non-dehydrogenative scenarios, contradicting earlier reports. Herein, the study employs noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) with high spatial resolution to conclusively characterize exemplary alkyne coupling products. Contrary to initial interpretations proposing dehydrogenative homocoupling on Ag(111), bond-resolved AFM imaging reveals the expression of enyne motifs. Based on complementary, extensive density functional theory calculations, the pertaining reaction mechanisms are explored. It is proposed that enyne formation initiates with a direct carbon-carbon coupling between two alkyne groups, followed by surface-assisted dehydrogenation-hydrogenation processes. Thereby consecutive steps of atomic hydrogen cleavage, surface migration and recombination to a different carbon atom enable bridging via carbon-carbon double bonding. The new results shed light on subtle, but crucial surface-mediated hydrogen transfer processes involved in the chemical bond formation, which are suggested to be of general relevance in on-surface synthesis. Terminal alkyne coupling on Ag(111) in ultrahigh vacuum is conclusively examined by bond-resolved atomic force microscopy and density functional theory modeling. The prevailing bonding motif is the enyne moiety, originating from a distinct surface-mediated dehydrogenation-hydrogenation reaction pathway. The findings highlight the important role of hydrogen transfer in the course of on-surface synthesis procedures. image

  • Reconnection in the Martian Magnetotail : Hall-MHD With Embedded Particle-in-Cell Simulations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 123:5, s. 3742-3763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission observations show clear evidence of the occurrence of the magnetic reconnection process in the Martian plasma tail. In this study, we use sophisticated numerical models to help us understand the effects of magnetic reconnection in the plasma tail. The numerical models used in this study are (a) a multispecies global Hall-magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) model and (b) a global HMHD model two-way coupled to an embedded fully kinetic particle-in-cell code. Comparison with MAVEN observations clearly shows that the general interaction pattern is well reproduced by the global HMHD model. The coupled model takes advantage of both the efficiency of the MHD model and the ability to incorporate kinetic processes of the particle-in-cell model, making it feasible to conduct kinetic simulations for Mars under realistic solar wind conditions for the first time. Results from the coupled model show that the Martian magnetotail is highly dynamic due to magnetic reconnection, and the resulting Mars-ward plasma flow velocities are significantly higher for the lighter ion fluid, which are quantitatively consistent with MAVEN observations. The HMHD with Embedded Particle-in-Cell model predicts that the ion loss rates are more variable but with similar mean values as compared with HMHD model results.

  • A 90nm CMOS UHF/UWB asymmetric transceiver for RFID readers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Solid-State Circuits Conference. ; , s. 179-182
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents an integrated asymmetric transceiver in 90nm CMOS technology for RFID reader. The proposed reader uses UHF transmitter to power up and inventory the tags. In the reverse link, a non-coherent Ultra-wide Band (UWB) receiver is deployed for data reception with high throughput and ranging capability. The transmitter delivers 160 kb/s ASK modulated data by an integrated modulator and a Digital Controlled Oscillator (DCO) in UHF band with 11% tuning range. The DCO consume 6 mW with 0.12 mm2 area. On the other side, adopting two integration channels, the 3-5 GHz energy detection receiver supports maximum 33 Mb/s data rate both in OOK and PPM modulations. The receiver front-end provides 59 dB voltage gain and 8.5 dB noise figure (NF). Measurement results shows that the receiver achieves an input sensitivity of -79 dBm at 10 Mb/s, with power consumption of 15.5 mW.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industrial Information Integration. - : Elsevier. - 2467-964X .- 2452-414X. ; 2, s. 19-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an integrated asymmetric UHF/UWB reader transceiver in 90 nm CMOS technology for industrial enterprise IoT applications. The reader uses UHF transmitter to power up and inventory the tags. Instead of backscattering, tag replies the reader using Ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses, allowing high throughput transmission and precise positioning. Therefore, a UWB receiver is deployed in the proposed reader for data reception and Time-of-Arrival (ToA) estimation using energy detection schemes. The transmitter delivers 160 kb/s ASK modulated data by an integrated modulator and a Digital Controlled Oscillator (DCO). The DCO has 11% tuning range ability to cover different UHF signal channels. On the UWB receiver side, the 3–5 GHz energy detection receiver supports maximum 33 Mb/s data rate in both OOK and PPM modulations. The receiver front-end provides 59 dB voltage gain and 8.5 dB noise figure (NF). Measurement results shows that the receiver achieves an input sensitivity of -79 dBm at 10 Mb/s, and the power consumption of transceiver is 21.5 mW.

  • Influence of π-Conjugation Units in Organic Dyes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 111:4, s. 1853-1860
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two organic dyes with the general structure donor-conjugated chain-acceptor (D-pi-A) have been investigated as sensitizers for nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells. The electron donor and acceptor groups were pyrrolidine and cyano acrylic acid, respectively. The conjugated chain of 2-cyano-3-{5-[2-(4-pyrrolidin-1-ylphenyl)vinyl]thiophen-2-yl}acrylic acid contains one phenyl ring and a thiophene unit and is therefore denoted PT, while for 2-cyano-3-{5 -[2-(5-pyrrolidin-1-ylthiophen-2-yl)vinyl]thiophen-2-yl}acrylic acid the phenyl ring is replaced by a second thiophene unit (TT). Solar-to-electrical energy conversion efficiencies under simulated AM 1.5 irradiation (1000 W m(-2)) of 2.3% were obtained for solar cells based on PT but of less than 0.05% for those based on TT. The reasons for the dramatic difference of the efficiencies were analyzed. Photoinduced absorption measurements revealed that the TT dye was not properly regenerated by redox electrolyte after electron injection. This sluggish regeneration is probably due to the 0.3 V less positive HOMO level for TT dye compared to the PT dye, resulting in a lower driving force for regeneration of the oxidized dye by iodide in the electrolyte. In addition, regeneration of the oxidized TT dye and electron injection from the excited TT dye may be poor due to formation of dye aggregates/complexes, as FT-IR measurements show an excess of not properly and/or unidentate bound TT dye molecules instead of bidentate bound PT dye molecules. The results highlight that small structural change of dyes results in significant changes in redox energies and binding features, affecting dramatically the performance of these dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells.

  • Kinetic Modeling in the Magnetosphere
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Magnetospheres in the Solar System. - : Wiley. ; , s. 607-615
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the state of the art of kinetic modeling techniques for simulating plasma kinetic dynamics in magnetospheres. We describe the key numerical techniques for enabling large-scale kinetic simulations of magnetospheres: parameter scaling, implicit Particle-in-Cell schemes and fluid-kinetic coupling. We show an application of these techniques to study particle acceleration and heating in asymmetric magnetic reconnection in the Ganymede magnetosphere.
