  • Bat fatalities at wind farms in Taiwan
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mammal Study. - : Mammalogical Society of Japan. - 1343-4152 .- 1348-6160. ; 42:2, s. 121-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We collected bat carcasses at three wind farms in Taiwan, located along the west coast mostly near the sea and/or in former coastal wetland habitats. We found 43 bat carcasses, mostly of common aerial-hawking species such as Pipistrellus abramus and Scotophilus kuhlii, but the island endemics Eptesicus serotinus horikawai and Myotis formosus flavus were also recovered. All bat species affected are believed to remain on the island all year. As far as we know this is the first report of bat fatalities at wind energy facilities in eastern Asia.

  • Availability and affordability of essential medicines for diabetes across high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: a prospective epidemiological study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-8587. ; 6:10, s. 798-808
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Data are scarce on the availability and affordability of essential medicines for diabetes. Our aim was to examine the availability and affordability of metformin, sulfonylureas, and insulin across multiple regions of the world and explore the effect of these on medicine use. Methods In the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study, participants aged 35-70 years (n=156 625) were recruited from 110 803 households, in 604 communities and 22 countries; availability (presence of any dose of medication in the pharmacy on the day of audit) and medicine cost data were collected from pharmacies with the Environmental Profile of a Community's Health audit tool. Our primary analysis was to describe the availability and affordability of metformin and insulin and also commonly used and prescribed combinations of two medicines for diabetes management (two oral drugs, metformin plus a sulphonylurea [either glibenclamide (also known as glyburide) or gliclazide] and one oral drug plus insulin [metformin plus insulin]). Medicines were defined as affordable if the cost of medicines was less than 20% of capacity-to-pay (the household income minus food expenditure). Our analyses included data collected in pharmacies and data from representative samples of households. Data on availability were ascertained during the pharmacy audit, as were data on cost of medications. These cost data were used to estimate the cost of a month's supply of essential medicines for diabetes. We estimated affordability of medicines using income data from household surveys. Findings Metformin was available in 113 (100%) of 113 pharmacies from high-income countries, 112 (88.2%) of 127 pharmacies in upper-middle-income countries, 179 (86.1%) of 208 pharmacies in lower-middle-income countries, 44 (64.7%) of 68 pharmacies in low-income countries (excluding India), and 88 (100%) of 88 pharmacies in India. Insulin was available in 106 (93.8%) pharmacies in high-income countries, 51 (40.2%) pharmacies in upper-middle-income countries, 61 (29.3%) pharmacies in lower-middle-income countries, seven (10.3%) pharmacies in lower-income countries, and 67 (76.1%) of 88 pharmacies in India. We estimated 0.7% of households in high-income countries and 26.9% of households in low-income countries could not afford metformin and 2.8% of households in high-income countries and 63.0% of households in low-income countries could not afford insulin. Among the 13 569 (8.6% of PURE participants) that reported a diagnosis of diabetes, 1222 (74.0%) participants reported diabetes medicine use in high-income countries compared with 143 (29.6%) participants in low-income countries. In multilevel models, availability and affordability were significantly associated with use of diabetes medicines. Interpretation Availability and affordability of essential diabetes medicines are poor in low-income and middle-income countries. Awareness of these global differences might importantly drive change in access for patients with diabetes.

  • Modular soft x-ray spectrometer for applications in energy sciences and quantum materials
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7623 .- 0034-6748. ; 88:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past decade, the advances in grating-based soft X-ray spectrometers have revolutionizedthe soft X-ray spectroscopies in materials research. However, these novel spectrometers are mostlydedicated designs, which cannot be easily adopted for applications with diverging demands. Here wepresent a versatile spectrometer design concept based on the Hettrick-Underwood optical scheme thatuses modular mechanical components. The spectrometer’s optics chamber can be used with gratingsoperated in either inside or outside orders, and the detector assembly can be reconfigured accordingly. The spectrometer can be designed to have high spectral resolution, exceeding 10 000 resolvingpower when using small source (∼1 µm) and detector pixels (∼5 µm) with high line density gratings(∼3000 lines/mm), or high throughput at moderate resolution. We report two such spectrometers withslightly different design goals and optical parameters in this paper. We show that the spectrometer withhigh throughput and large energy window is particularly useful for studying the sustainable energymaterials. We demonstrate that the extensive resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) map of batterycathode material LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 can be produced in few hours using such a spectrometer.Unlike analyzing only a handful of RIXS spectra taken at selected excitation photon energies across theelemental absorption edges to determine various spectral features like the localized dd excitations andnon-resonant fluorescence emissions, these features can be easily identified in the RIXS maps. Studyingsuch RIXS maps could reveal novel transition metal redox in battery compounds that are sometimeshard to be unambiguously identified in X-ray absorption and emission spectra. We propose that thismodular spectrometer design can serve as the platform for further customization to meet specificscientific demands.

  • Momentum-resolved resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering (qRIXS) endstation at the ALS
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier BV. - 0368-2048. ; 257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A momentum resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (qRIXS) experimental station with continuously rotatable spectrometers and parallel detection is designed to operate at different beamlines at synchrotron and free electron laser (FEL) facilities. This endstation, currently located at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), has five emission ports on the experimental chamber for mounting the high-throughput modular soft X-ray spectrometers (MXS) [24]. Coupled to the rotation from the supporting hexapod, the scattered X-rays from 27.5° (forward scattering) to 152.5° (backward scattering) relative to the incident photon beam can be recorded, enabling the momentum-resolved RIXS spectroscopy. The components of this endstation are described in details, and the preliminary RIXS measurements on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) reveal the low energy vibronic excitations from the strong electron-phonon coupling at C K edge around σ* band. The grating upgrade option to enhance the performance at low photon energies is presented and the potential of this spectroscopy is discussed in summary.

  • Genetics of the thrombomodulin-endothelial cell protein C receptor system and the risk of early-onset ischemic stroke.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 13:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polymorphisms in coagulation genes have been associated with early-onset ischemic stroke. Here we pursue an a priori hypothesis that genetic variation in the endothelial-based receptors of the thrombomodulin-protein C system (THBD and PROCR) may similarly be associated with early-onset ischemic stroke. We explored this hypothesis utilizing a multi-stage design of discovery and replication.Discovery was performed in the Genetics-of-Early-Onset Stroke (GEOS) Study, a biracial population-based case-control study of ischemic stroke among men and women aged 15-49 including 829 cases of first ischemic stroke (42.2% African-American) and 850 age-comparable stroke-free controls (38.1% African-American). Twenty-four single-nucleotide-polymorphisms (SNPs) in THBD and 22 SNPs in PROCR were evaluated. Following LD pruning (r2≥0.8), we advanced uncorrelated SNPs forward for association analyses. Associated SNPs were evaluated for replication in an early-onset ischemic stroke population (onset-age<60 years) consisting of 3676 cases and 21118 non-stroke controls from 6 case-control studies. Lastly, we determined if the replicated SNPs also associated with older-onset ischemic stroke in the METASTROKE data-base.Among GEOS Caucasians, PROCR rs9574, which was in strong LD with 8 other SNPs, and one additional independent SNP rs2069951, were significantly associated with ischemic stroke (rs9574, OR = 1.33, p = 0.003; rs2069951, OR = 1.80, p = 0.006) using an additive-model adjusting for age, gender and population-structure. Adjusting for risk factors did not change the associations; however, associations were strengthened among those without risk factors. PROCR rs9574 also associated with early-onset ischemic stroke in the replication sample (OR = 1.08, p = 0.015), but not older-onset stroke. There were no PROCR associations in African-Americans, nor were there any THBD associations in either ethnicity.PROCR polymorphisms are associated with early-onset ischemic stroke in Caucasians.

  • Ingår i: TESOL quarterly (Print). - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0039-8322 .- 1545-7249. ; 52:3, s. 701-720
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the first half of 2017, four scholars who know English-medium instruction (EMI) well and view it from different perspectives took part in a round-robin exchange. The forum contributors answered six sets of questions on aspects of EMI: defining terms; learning English in an EMI environment; the political or policy framework; learning a subject in a second language; teachers working in a second language; and EMI and multilingual education. Below is a summary of their answers (a longer version can be found in the online version of this Forum as supplementary content). The questions were devised and the responses edited by Philip Shaw.

  • Mo, Fe bimetallic carbide composite as high stability electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-2929 .- 2213-3437. ; 10:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing inexpensive but efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is critical to the design of zinc-air battery (ZAB). Here, we report a good ORR electrocatalyst (MoFeCx-NC) composed of nitrogen-doped carbon armored by ferro-molybdenum binary carbides. The physical characterization of MoFeCx-NC by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that MoFeCx-NC is composed of amorphous bimetallic carbides and N-doped carbon. In addition, the electrochemical test shows that its more positive onset potential of 0.962 V and better half-wave potential of 0.847 V, almost close to Pt/C (Eonset = 0.957 V, E1/2 = 0.854 V). Furthermore, the MoFeCx-NC assembled ZAB exhibits a good peak power density of 79.14 mW cm−2 and an impressive 1.40 V discharge voltage, indicating that the obtained MoFeCx-NC is an ideal for the future ORR electrocatalyst.
