- Existing works concluded that coherent transmission outperforms non-coherent transmission in the downlink of cell-free systems when the fronthaul links have unlimited capacity. Since the capacity of the fronthaul links of cell-free networks is typically limited, in this paper we ask the question whether this conclusion holds under more realistic assumptions on the fronthaul capacity. To answer this question, we study and compare the performance of these transmission strategies by formulating novel energy efficiency (EE) maximization problems for both strategies, where we explicitly consider realistic fronthaul capacity and power consumption constraints. Despite the non-convexity of these problems, we derive closed-form equations to find suboptimal solutions of both problems using a unified framework that combines successive convex approximation and the Dinkelbach algorithm. Numerical results show that the performance of coherent transmission is severely impacted by limited fronthaul capacities, power consumption on the fronthaul links, user-centric cluster size and the number of antennas at the access points, such that in many cases non-coherent transmission achieves higher EE than coherent transmission. Based on these results, we provide deployment guidelines on when to use coherent or non-coherent transmission to maximize the EE of cell-free systems with limited fronthauls.

40Ar/39Ar dates controlled by white mica deformation and strain localization : Insights from comparing in situ laser ablation and single-grain fusion techniques

- In situ laser ablation and single-grain fusion Ar-40/Ar-39 geochronological techniques were directly compared using white mica from nine metasedimentary rocks from the Vaimok Lens of the Seve Nappe Complex (SNC) in the Scandinavian Caledonides. Seven of the rocks are from the eclogite-bearing Grapesvare nappe within the lens that is defined by D2 structures (S2 and F2), which were formed during exhumation following late Cambrian/Early Ordovician ultra-high pressure metamorphism. Two other rocks were obtained from 'Scandian' shear zones that delimit the nappes within the lens. The shear zones were active during terminal collision of Baltica and Laurentia in the Silurian to Devonian. The rocks exhibit variable deformation intensities and degrees of strain localization, expressed in particular by white mica. The in situ laser ablation and single-grain fusion Ar-40/Ar-39 dates both span from the late Cambrian to Middle Devonian. Results of both techniques generally show decreasing dates with increasing bulk deformation intensity and successive structural generations (i.e., D2 then Scandian structures). Furthermore, several discrepancies are evident when comparing the results of the two techniques for the same rocks, indicating the Ar-40/Ar-39 dates are not solely governed by bulk deformation intensities and structural generations. Instead, the discrepancies demonstrate the additional influence of white mica strain localization, which is illuminated by the different analytical volumes of the techniques. Thus, the Ar-40/Ar-39 datasets are altogether deciphered as a function of bulk deformation intensity and degree of strain localization that affected the overall white mica volume. The former controls the gross Ar-40 loss from the overall volume and the latter dictates the variability of Ar-40 loss within the volume. Exploiting the interplay of these two phenomena for the Vaimok Lens rocks with in situ laser ablation allows for the broad span of Ar-40/Ar-39 dates to be contextualized into a sequence of tectonic events: (1) cooling at 474 +/- 3 Ma, (2) pre-collision deformation at 447 +/- 2 Ma and (3) activation of crustal-scale shear zones in the SNC related to continental collision at 431 +/- 3 Ma and 411 +/- 3 Ma.

- This paper describes the InP platforms for photonic integration and the development on these platforms of an optical code division multiple access (O-CDMA) system for local area networks. We demonstrate three building blocks of this system: an optical pulse source, an encoder/decoder pair, and a threshold detector. The optical pulse source consists of an integrated colliding pulse-mode laser with nearly transform-limited 10 Gb/s pulses and optical injection locking to an external clock for synchronization. The encoder/decoder pair is based on arrayed waveguide gratings. Bit-error-rate measurements involving six users at 10 Gb/s showed error-free transmission, while O-CDMA codes were calibrated using frequency resolved optical gating. For threshold detection after the decoder, we compared two Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-based optical thresholding schemes and present results on a new type of electroabsorber-based MZI.

- What determines the credibility of opinion polls, and for whom? Opinion polls assessing voting intention are an increasingly prominent aspect of pre-election media discourse, yet they often vary in terms of their estimations, who conducted the poll, and where the poll is ultimately published. This letter considers the determinants of pre-election poll credibility when citizens are exposed to conflicting polls, contributing to a growing field which considers the subjectivity with which partisan-relevant information is perceived in polarised contexts. Using a conjoint analysis in Turkey, this paper produces strong evidence that polls are perceived differently across partisan lines. Whereas government supporters rely almost exclusively on a poll’s result, opposition supporters place considerably more weight on the media source when determining poll credibility.

- Pre-election opinion polls are an increasingly prominent aspect of political campaigns, yet they often vary in terms of their results, sources, and where they are published. Citizens are therefore increasingly confronted with the proposition of which polls to give more credence to than others in shaping their voting behaviour. This study investigates the relationship between subjective determinations of poll credibility and voting behaviour in the polarised context of Turkish mayoral elections. The theoretical perspective of motivated reasoning is employed to consider how individuals determine and act upon credible opinion polls in mixed information environments. Using an original two-step experimental approach conducted in 2020, this paper establishes that while the effects of opinion poll credibility on party choice are limited to the strategic considerations of the supporters of smaller parties, opinion polls can have considerable demobilising effects when polling environments are conflicting or deemed not credible. The findings produced in this study are more suggestive of accuracy-seeking than directional motivations, and they have considerable implications for how we think about the relationship between polls, politicians, and voters.

The traits of "trait ecologists": An analysis of the use of trait and functional trait terminology

- Trait and functional trait approaches have revolutionized ecology improving our understanding of community assembly, species coexistence, and biodiversity loss. Focusing on traits promotes comparability across spatial and organizational scales, but terms must be used consistently. While several papers have offered definitions, it remains unclear how ecologists operationalize "trait" and "functional trait" terms. Here, we evaluate how researchers and the published literatures use these terms and explore differences among subdisciplines and study systems (taxa and biome). By conducting both a survey and a literature review, we test the hypothesis that ecologists' working definition of "trait" is adapted or altered when confronting the realities of collecting, analyzing and presenting data. From 486 survey responses and 712 reviewed papers, we identified inconsistencies in the understanding and use of terminology among researchers, but also limited inclusion of definitions within the published literature. Discrepancies were not explained by subdiscipline, system of study, or respondent characteristics, suggesting there could be an inconsistent understanding even among those working in related topics. Consistencies among survey responses included the use of morphological, phonological, and physiological traits. Previous studies have called for unification of terminology; yet, our study shows that proposed definitions are not consistently used or accepted. Sources of disagreement include trait heritability, defining and interpreting function, and dealing with organisms in which individuals are not clearly recognizable. We discuss and offer guidelines for overcoming these disagreements. The diversity of life on Earth means traits can represent different features that can be measured and reported in different ways, and thus, narrow definitions that work for one system will fail in others. We recommend ecologists embrace the breadth of biodiversity using a simplified definition of "trait" more consistent with its common use. Trait-based approaches will be most powerful if we accept that traits are at least as diverse as trait ecologists.

- Den här studien fokuserar lärares arbete med att forma innehållet i kemiundervisning på mel-lanstadiet och den läraragens som kommer till uttryck i transformation av policyintentioner från styrdokument och andra undervisningsresurser. Studien är baserad på intervjuer med nioläraresom undervisade i kemi på mellanstadiet. Intervjuerna var semi-struktureradeoch analyserades utifrån en ekologisk modell av läraragens. I intervjuerna har begreppen kemiska sammanhang och kemiska samband fungerat som utgångspunkti samtalen och som exempel på kursplanebegrepp som lärare behöver tolka och förhålla sig till. Resultaten visar att lärarna både formulerar egna mål och utgår från mål i styrdokumenten för att forma kemiundervis-ning på mellanstadiet. Olika lärare använderoch har tillgång till olika resurser för arbetet med att transformera policyintentioner. Sammantaget får detta som konsekvens att kemiundervis-ningen ges olika innehåll och utformning av olika lärare. Av vissa lärare lyfts resurser som ”Naturvetenskap och teknik för alla” (NTA) och gamla nationella prov fram som viktiga re-surser som underlättar arbetet och används som referenser i arbetet med att forma undervis-ningens innehåll medan andra lärare betonar betydelsen av en kollegial tolkningsgemenskap. Resultaten synliggör olika agentiska förhållningssätt bland kemilärare på mellanstadiet i trans-formation av policyintentioner i kemiundervisningen.
