  • Double-Pionic Fusion of Nuclear Systems and the "ABC" Effect : Approaching a Puzzle by Exclusive and Kinematically Complete Measurements
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:5, s. 052301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ABC effect-a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the pi pi invariant mass spectrum, first observed by Abashian, Booth, and Crowe-is well known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. Here we report on the first exclusive and kinematically complete measurements of the most basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) at beam energies of 1.03 and 1.35 GeV. The measurements, which have been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA, reveal the ABC effect to be a (pi pi)(I=L=0) channel phenomenon associated with both a resonancelike energy dependence in the integral cross section and the formation of a Delta Delta system in the intermediate state. A corresponding simple s-channel resonance ansatz provides a surprisingly good description of the data.

  • Exclusive measurements of pd -> He-3 pi pi : The ABC effect revisited
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 637:4-5, s. 223-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exclusive measurements of the reactions pd -> He-3 pi(+)7 pi(-) and pd -> He-3 pi(0)pi(0) have been carried out at T-p = 0.893 GeV at the CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The pi(+)pi(-) channel evidences a pronounced enhancement at low invariant pi pi masses-as anticipated from previous inclusive measurements of the ABC effect. This enhancement is seen to be even much larger in the isoscalar pi(0)pi(0) channel. The differential distributions prove this enhancement to be of scalar-isoscalar nature. Delta Delta calculations give a good description of the data, if a boundstate condition is imposed for the intermediate Delta Delta system.

  • Measurement of the slope parameter for the η → 3π0 decay in the pp → ppη reaction
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 76:4, s. 048201-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The CELSIUS-WASA setup is used to measure the 3π0 decay of η mesons produced in pp interactions with beam kinetic energies of 1.36 and 1.45 GeV. The efficiency-corrected Dalitz plot and density distributions for this decay are shown, together with a fit of the quadratic slope parameter α yielding α = −0.026 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.010(syst). This value is compared to recent experimental results and theoretical predictions.

  • Measurement of eta meson decays into lepton-antilepton pairs
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. Particles and fields. - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2821 .- 1089-4918. ; 77:3, s. 032004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for rare lepton decays of the eta meson was performed using the WASA detector at CELSIUS. Two candidates for double Dalitz decay eta -> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) events are reported with a background of 1.3 +/- 0.2 events. This allows to set an upper limit to the branching ratio of 9.7x10(-5) (90% CL). The branching ratio for the decay eta -> e(+)e(-)gamma is determined to (7.8 +/- 0.5(stat)+/- 0.8(syst))x10(-3) in agreement with world average value. An upper limit (90% CL) for the branching ratio for the eta -> e(+)e(-) decay is 2.7x10(-5) and a limit for the sum of the eta ->mu(+)mu(-)mu(+)mu(-) and eta ->pi(+)pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays is 3.6x10(-4).

  • Female Sex Hormones Influence the Febrile Response Induced by Lipopolysaccharide, Cytokines and Prostaglandins but not by Interleukin-1 beta in Rats
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of neuroendocrinology (Print). - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0953-8194 .- 1365-2826. ; 28:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are differences in the immune response, and particularly fever, between males and females. In the present study, we investigated how the febrile responses induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and different endogenous pyrogens were affected by female gonadal hormones. The febrile response to i.p. injection of LPS (50g/kg) was 40% lower in female rats compared to male or ovariectomised (OVX) female rats. Accordingly, oestrogen replacement in OVX animals reduced LPS-induced fever. Treatment with the prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor indomethacin (2mg/kg, i.p. 30min before) reduced the febrile response induced by LPS in both OVX (88%) and sham-operated (71%) rats. In line with the enhanced fever in OVX rats, there was increased expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the hypothalamus and elevated levels of prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)). In addition, OVX rats were hyper-responsive to PGE(2) injected i.c.v. By contrast to the enhanced fever in response to LPS and PGE(2), the febrile response induced by i.c.v. injection of interleukin (IL)-1 was unaffected by ovariectomy, whereas the responses induced by tumour necrosis factor (TNF)- and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 were completely abrogated. These results suggest that the mediators involved in the febrile response in females are similar to males, although the reduction of female hormones may decrease the responsiveness of some mediators such as TNF- and MIP-1. Compensatory mechanisms may be activated in females after ovariectomy such as an augmented synthesis of COX-2 and PGE(2).

  • Evaluation of the ECG based Selvester scoring method to estimate myocardial scar burden and predict clinical outcome in patients with left bundle branch block, with comparison to late gadolinium enhancement CMR imaging
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annals of Noninvasive Electrocardiology. - : Wiley. - 1082-720X. ; 22:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Myocardial scar burden quantification is an emerging clinical parameter for risk stratification of sudden cardiac death and prediction of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. We investigated the relationships among semiautomated Selvester score burden and late gadolinium enhancement-cardiovascular magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) assessed scar burden and clinical outcome in patients with underlying heart failure, left bundle branch block (LBBB) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) treatment. Methods: Selvester QRS scoring was performed on all subjects with ischemic and nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy at Skåne University Hospital Lund (2002-2013) who had undergone LGE-CMR and 12-lead ECG with strict LBBB pre-ICD implantation. Results: Sixty patients were included; 57% nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy and 43% ischemic cardiomyopathy with mean left ventricular ejection fraction of 27.6% ± 11.7. All patients had scar by Selvester scoring. Sixty-two percent had scar by LGE-CMR (n = 37). The Spearman correlation coefficient for LGE-CMR and Selvester score derived scar was r = .35 (p = .007). In scar negative LGE-CMR, there was evidence of scar by Selvester scoring in all patients (range 3%-33%, median 15%). Fourteen patients (23%) had an event during the follow-up period; 11 (18%) deaths and six adequate therapies (10%). There was a moderate trend indicating that presence of scar increased the risk of clinical endpoints in the LGE-CMR analysis (p = .045). Conclusion: There is a modest correlation between LGE-CMR and Selvester scoring verified myocardial scar. CMR based scar burden is correlated to clinical outcome, but Selvester scoring is not. The Selvester scoring algorithm needs to be further refined in order to be clinically relevant and reliable for detailed scar evaluation in patients with LBBB.

  • Overview of some feedback-&control systems at synchrotron SolEIL
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Personal Computers and Particle Accelerator Controls, PCaPAC 2016. - 9783954501892 ; , s. 132-136
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper gives an overview of some feedback & control systems at Synchrotron SOLEIL that are in use or in development today. Beam stability is crucial and adressed in all SOLEIL aspects; Fast Orbit Feedback is a multi-input multi-output control system made to stabilize beam position perturbations in the low- & high frequency band. In addition, active RF cavities are used to maintain stable beam energy & spread as well as keeping electron density even throughout the storage ring. Beam stability also comes from feedforward non-linear control in particle trajectory compensation on both sides of electromagnetic undulators. On some beamlines, multi-actuator piezos or pneumatics are used to regulate photon flux to keep within detector operating range; a method to maximize the photon flux while still keeping below detector damage thresholds. Currently in development & at the sample stage level, the Nanoprobe Project collaboration (MAXIV & SOLEIL) focuses on sample stabilization during step- & fly- scans which is realized through multi-axis nano-positioning with high- & low- frequency closed-loop control implementing interferometer feedback &/or compensation tables.
