  • Control of the hydrogen:deuterium isotope mixture using pellets in JET
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 59:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deuterium pellets are injected into an initially pure hydrogen H-mode plasma in order to control the hydrogen: deuterium (H:D) isotope mixture. The pellets are deposited in the outer 20% of the minor radius, similar to that expected in ITER, creating transiently hollow electron density profiles. A H: D isotope mixture of approximately 45%:55% is obtained in the core with a pellet fuelling throughput of Phi(pel) = 0.045P(aux)/T-e,T-ped similar to previous pellet fuelling experiments in pure deuterium. Evolution of the H: D mix in the core is reproduced using a simple model, although deuterium transport could be higher at the beginning of the pellet train compared with the flat-top phase.

  • Neurogenin 3(+) cells contribute to beta-cell neogenesis and proliferation in injured adult mouse pancreas
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Cell Death and Disease. - London : Nature Publishing Group. - 2041-4889. ; 4, s. e523-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We previously showed that injury by partial duct ligation (PDL) in adult mouse pancreas activates Neurogenin 3 (Ngn3)(+) progenitor cells that can differentiate to beta cells ex vivo. Here we evaluate the role of Ngn3(+) cells in beta cell expansion in situ. PDL not only induced doubling of the beta cell volume but also increased the total number of islets. beta cells proliferated without extended delay (the so-called 'refractory' period), their proliferation potential was highest in small islets, and 86% of the beta cell expansion was attributable to proliferation of pre-existing beta cells. At sufficiently high Ngn3 expression level, upto 14% of all beta cells and 40% of small islet beta cells derived from non-beta cells. Moreover, beta cell proliferation was blunted by a selective ablation of Ngn3(+) cells but not by conditional knockout of Ngn3 in pre-existing beta cells supporting a key role for Ngn3(+) insulin(-) cells in beta cell proliferation and expansion. We conclude that Ngn3(+) cell-dependent proliferation of pre-existing and newly-formed beta cells as well as reprogramming of non-beta cells contribute to in vivo beta cell expansion in the injured pancreas of adult mice.

  • In vivo (R)-[(11)C]PK11195 PET imaging of 18kDa translocator protein in recent onset psychosis.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: NPJ schizophrenia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2334-265X. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence is accumulating that immune dysfunction is involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. It has been hypothesized that microglia activation is present in patients with schizophrenia. Various in vivo and post-mortem studies have investigated this hypothesis, but as yet with inconclusive results. Microglia activation is associated with elevations in 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) levels, which can be measured with the positron emission tomography (PET) tracer (R)-[(11)C]PK11195. The purpose of the present study was to investigate microglia activation in psychosis in vivo at an early stage of the disease. (R)-[(11)C]PK11195 binding potential (BPND) was measured in 19 patients with recent onset psychosis and 17 age and gender-matched healthy controls. Total gray matter, as well as five gray matter regions of interest (frontal cortex, temporal cortex, parietal cortex, striatum, and thalamus) were defined a priori. PET data were analysed using a reference tissue approach and a supervised cluster analysis algorithm to identify the reference region. No significant difference in (R)-[(11)C]PK11195 BPND between patients and controls was found in total gray matter, nor one of the regions of interest. These findings suggest that microglia activation is not present in recent onset psychosis or that it is a subtle phenomenon that could not be detected using the design of the present study.

  • Ecosystem Engineering by Seagrasses Interacts with Grazing to Shape an Intertidal Landscape
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Plos One. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-facilitation through ecosystem engineering (i.e., organism modification of the abiotic environment) and consumer-resource interactions are both major determinants of spatial patchiness in ecosystems. However, interactive effects of these two mechanisms on spatial complexity have not been extensively studied. We investigated the mechanisms underlying a spatial mosaic of low-tide exposed hummocks and waterlogged hollows on an intertidal mudflat in the Wadden Sea dominated by the seagrass Zostera noltii. A combination of field measurements, an experiment and a spatially explicit model indicated that the mosaic resulted from localized sediment accretion by seagrass followed by selective waterfowl grazing. Hollows were bare in winter, but were rapidly colonized by seagrass during the growth season. Colonized hollows were heavily grazed by brent geese and widgeon in autumn, converting these patches to a bare state again and disrupting sediment accretion by seagrass. In contrast, hummocks were covered by seagrass throughout the year and were rarely grazed, most likely because the waterfowl were not able to employ their preferred but water requiring feeding strategy ('dabbling') here. Our study exemplifies that interactions between ecosystem engineering by a foundation species (seagrass) and consumption (waterfowl grazing) can increase spatial complexity at the landscape level.

  • Social mindfulness and prosociality vary across the globe
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 118:35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans are social animals, but not everyone will be mindful of others to the same extent. Individual differences have been found, but would social mindfulness also be shaped by one's location in the world? Expecting cross-national differences to exist, we examined if and how social mindfulness differs across countries. At little to no material cost, social mindfulness typically entails small acts of attention or kindness. Even though fairly common, such low-cost cooperation has received little empirical attention. Measuring social mindfulness across 31 samples from industrialized countries and regions (n = 8,354), we found considerable variation. Among selected country-level variables, greater social mindfulness was most strongly associated with countries' better general performance on environmental protection. Together, our findings contribute to the literature on prosociality by targeting the kind of everyday cooperation that is more focused on communicating benevolence than on providing material benefits.

  • A Grid of MARCS Model Atmospheres for S Stars
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Why Galaxies Care about AGB Stars II.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • S-type stars are late-type giants whose atmospheres are enriched in carbon and s-process elements because of either extrinsic pollution by a binary companion or intrinsic nucleosynthesis and dredge-up on the thermally-pulsing AGB. A large grid of S-star model atmospheres has been computed covering the range 2700 \le T$_eff$(K) \le 4000 with 0.5 \le C/O \le 0.99. ZrO and TiO band strength indices as well as VJHKL photometry are needed to disentangle T$_eff$, C/O and [s/Fe]. A \ldquobest-model finding tool\rdquo has been developed using a set of well-chosen indices and checked against photometry as well as low- and high-resolution spectroscopy. It is found that applying M-star model atmospheres (i.e., with a solar C/O ratio) to S stars can lead to errors in T$_eff$ up to 400 K. We constrain the parameter space occupied by the S stars of the vast Henize sample in terms of T$_eff$, [C/O] and [s/Fe].
