  • Performance of algorithms that reconstruct missing transverse momentum in root s=8 TeV proton-proton collisions in the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 77:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reconstruction and calibration algorithms used to calculate missing transverse momentum (E-T(miss)) with the ATLAS detector exploit energy deposits in the calorimeter and tracks reconstructed in the inner detector as well as the muon spectrometer. Various strategies are used to suppress effects arising from additional proton-proton interactions, called pileup, concurrent with the hard-scatter processes. Tracking information is used to distinguish contributions from the pileup interactions using their vertex separation along the beam axis. The performance of the E-T(miss) reconstruction algorithms, especially with respect to the amount of pileup, is evaluated using data collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV during 2012, and results are shown for a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1). The simulation and modelling of E-T(miss) in events containing a Z boson decaying to two charged leptons (electrons or muons) or a W boson decaying to a charged lepton and a neutrino are compared to data. The acceptance for different event topologies, with and without high transverse momentum neutrinos, is shown for a range of threshold criteria for E-T(miss), and estimates of the systematic uncertainties in the E-T(miss) measurements are presented.

  • Reconstruction of primary vertices at the ATLAS experiment in Run 1 proton-proton collisions at the LHC
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 77:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the method and performance of primary vertex reconstruction in proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment during Run 1 of the LHC. The studies presented focus on data taken during 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. The performance has been measured as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing over a wide range, from one to seventy. The measurement of the position and size of the luminous region and its use as a constraint to improve the primary vertex resolution are discussed. A longitudinal vertex position resolution of about 30 mu m is achieved for events with high multiplicity of reconstructed tracks. The transverse position resolution is better than 20 mu m and is dominated by the precision on the size of the luminous region. An analytical model is proposed to describe the primary vertex reconstruction efficiency as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing and of the longitudinal size of the luminous region. Agreement between the data and the predictions of this model is better than 3% up to seventy interactions per bunch crossing.

  • Search for bottom squark pair production in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 76:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The result of a search for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the Standard Model bottom quark ((b) over tilde (1)) is reported. The search uses 3.2 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015. Bottom squarks are searched for in events containing large missing transverse momentum and exactly two jets identified as originating from b-quarks. No excess above the expected Standard Model background yield is observed. Exclusion limits at 95 % confidence level on the mass of the bottom squark are derived in phenomenological supersymmetric R-parity-conserving models in which the (b) over tilde (1) is the lightest squark and is assumed to decay exclusively via (b) over tilde (1) -> b (chi) over tilde (0)(1), where (chi) over tilde (0)(1) is the lightest neutralino. The limits significantly extend previous results; bottom squark masses up to 800 (840) GeV are excluded for the. (chi) over tilde (0)(1) mass below 360 (100) GeV whilst differences in mass above 100 GeV between the (b) over tilde (1) and the (chi) over tilde (0)(1) are excluded up to a (b) over tilde (1) mass of 500 GeV.

  • Search for charged Higgs bosons produced in association with a top quark and decaying via H-+/- -> tau nu using pp collision data recorded at root s=13 TeV by the ATLAS detector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 759, s. 555-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Charged Higgs bosons produced in association with a single top quark and decaying via H-+/- -> tau nu are searched for with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, using proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb(-1). The final state is characterised by the presence of a hadronic tau decay and missing transverse momentum, as well as a hadronically decaying top quark, resulting in the absence of high-transverse-momentum electrons and muons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background from Standard Model processes. A statistical analysis leads to 95% confidence-level upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction, sigma (pp -> [b]tH(+/-)) x BR(H-+/- -> tau nu), between 1.9 pb and 15 fb, for charged Higgs boson masses ranging from 200 to 2000 GeV. The exclusion limits for this search surpass those obtained with the proton-proton collision data recorded at root s = 8 TeV. C) 2016 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V. • Search for dark matter in association with a Higgs boson decaying to b-quarks in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 765, s. 11-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for dark matter pair production in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks is presented, using 3.2 fb(-1) of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decay of the Higgs boson is reconstructed as a high-momentum b (b) over bar system with either a pair of small-radius jets, or a single large-radius jet with substructure. The observed data are found to be consistent with the expected backgrounds. Results are interpreted using a simplified model with a gauge boson mediating the interaction between dark matter and the Standard Model as well as a two-Higgs-doublet model containing an additional Z' boson which decays to a Standard Model Higgs boson and a new pseudoscalar Higgs boson, the latter decaying into a pair of dark matter particles.

  • Search for gluinos in events with an isolated lepton, jets and missing transverse momentum at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 76:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results of a search for gluinos in final states with an isolated electron or muon, multiple jets and large missing transverse momentum using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV are presented. The dataset used was recorded in 2015 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb(-1). Six signal selections are defined that best exploit the signal characteristics. The data agree with the Standard Model background expectation in all six signal selections, and the largest deviation is a 2.1 standard deviation excess. The results are interpreted in a simplified model where pair-produced gluinos decay via the lightest chargino to the lightest neutralino. In this model, gluinos are excluded up to masses of approximately 1.6 TeV depending on the mass spectrum of the simplified model, thus surpassing the limits of previous searches.

  • Search for high-mass new phenomena in the dilepton final state using proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 761, s. 372-392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search is conducted for both resonant and non-resonant high-mass new phenomena in dielectron and dimuon final states. The search uses 3.2 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data, collected at root s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015. The dilepton invariant mass is used as the discriminating variable. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed; therefore limits are set on the signal model parameters of interest at 95% credibility level. Upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching ratio for resonances decaying to dileptons, and the limits are converted into lower limits on the resonance mass, ranging between 2.74 TeV and 3.36 TeV, depending on the model. Lower limits on the llqq contact interaction scale are set between 16.7 TeV and 25.2 TeV, also depending on the model.

  • Search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of the Higgs and Z bosons with the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 77:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Direct searches for lepton flavour violation in decays of the Higgs and Z bosons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. The following three decays are considered: H -> e tau, H -> mu tau, and Z -> mu tau. The searches are based on the data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1) at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. No significant excess is observed, and upper limits on the lepton-flavour-violating branching ratios are set at the 95% confidence level: Br(H -> e tau) < 1.04%, Br(H -> mu tau) < 1.43%, and Br(Z -> mu tau) < 1.69 x 10(-5).

  • Search for metastable heavy charged particles with large ionization energy loss in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV using the ATLAS experiment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010. ; 93:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a search for massive charged long-lived particles produced in pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV at the LHC using the ATLAS experiment. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb(-1). Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of massive charged long-lived particles, such as R-hadrons. These massive particles are expected to be produced with a velocity significantly below the speed of light, and therefore to have a specific ionization higher than any Standard Model particle of unit charge at high momenta. The Pixel subsystem of the ATLAS detector is used to measure the ionization energy loss of reconstructed charged particles and to search for such highly ionizing particles. The search presented here has much greater sensitivity than a similar search performed using the ATLAS detector in the root s = 8 TeV data set, thanks to the increase in expected signal cross section due to the higher center-of-mass energy of collisions, to an upgraded detector with a new silicon layer close to the interaction point, and to analysis improvements. No significant deviation from Standard Model background expectations is observed, and lifetime-dependent upper limits on R-hadron production cross sections and masses are set. Gluino R-hadrons with lifetimes above 0.4 ns and decaying to q (q) over bar plus a 100 GeV neutralino are excluded at the 95% confidence level, with lower mass limit ranging between 740 and 1590 GeV. In the case of stable R-hadrons the lower mass limit at the 95% confidence level is 1570 GeV.

  • Search for new phenomena in dijet mass and angular distributions from pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 754, s. 302-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter describes a model-agnostic search for pairs of jets (dijets) produced by resonant and non-resonant phenomena beyond the Standard Model in 3.6 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The distribution of the invariant mass of the two leading jets is examined for local excesses above a data-derived estimate of the smoothly falling prediction of the Standard Model. The data are also compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of Standard Model angular distributions derived from the rapidity of the two jets. No evidence of anomalous phenomena is observed in the data, which are used to exclude, at 95% CL, quantum black holes with threshold masses below 8.3 TeV, 8.1 TeV, or 5.1 TeV in three different benchmark scenarios; resonance masses below 5.2 TeV for excited quarks, 2.6 TeV in a W' model, a range of masses starting from mZ' = 1.5 TeVand couplings from g(q) = 0.2 in a Z' model; and contact interactions with a compositeness scale below 12.0 TeV and 17.5 TeV respectively for destructive and constructive interference between the new interaction and QCD processes. These results significantly extend the ATLAS limits obtained from 8 TeV data. Gaussian-shaped contributions to the mass distribution are also excluded if the effective cross-section exceeds values ranging from approximately 50-300 fb for masses below 2 TeV to 2-20 fb for masses above 4 TeV.
