  • Nurses’ patient-education work : conditional factors - an integrative review.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd.. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834 .- 1365-263X. ; 20:2, s. 170-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: The aim of this review was to identify conditional factors for nurses' patient-education work and to identify foundational aspects of significance when designing studies on this patient-education work. BACKGROUND: A few reviews of nurses patient education work exist, published up to 30 years ago, spawning interest in performing a review of more recent studies. EVALUATION: A search of CINAHL, MEDLINE and ERIC was made for articles dating from 1998 to 2011. Thirty-two articles were selected and an integrative review was performed. KEY ISSUES: Conditional factors were identified and beliefs and knowledge, environment, organization, interdisciplinary cooperation, collegial teamwork and patient education activities. A model was developed to describe foundational aspects of significance when designing studies. CONCLUSIONS: The conditional factors are to be seen as either enabling or hindering the accomplishment of evidence-based patient education and the level of person centredness, patient safe care and ethics - something that has to be considered when designing studies. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: More detailed studies are required to clarify the nature of patient education work and to create realistic conditions that enable the role to be fulfilled in everyday work. Such knowledge is of significance for nursing management in developing supportive activities for nurses.

  • Qualitative Outcome analysis: a method for developing clinical interventions from qualitative results with examples of information processing in palliative cancer care
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 6 th Nordic Interdisciplinary Conference on Qualiative Methods in the Service of Health, May 2-4, 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Recent decades have witnessed the development of qualitative methods as well as intense debate concerning the significance of methodological rigour. Although qualitative research has become an established part of health care, questions have been raised concerning how results can inform practice. Qualitative Outcome Analysis (QOA) is a method derived from qualitative research that allows interventions to be evaluated and that bridges the theory-practice gap on the path from knowledge generation to knowledge implementation. Aim: The aim is to describe Qualitative Outcome Analysis (QOA) by means of examples from an ongoing project about information processing in palliative cancer care and on the basis of our results from phenomenological and conversational analysis studies of person centred information in palliative care for patients with recurrent gastroenterological cancer. The participatory dimensions identified in the project will be related to QOA procedures. Methods: Focus groups with the palliative care team at an oncology outpatient unit were held, and major results from previous studies in the project were used as a framework or guide in order to facilitate discussion and reflection on the team’s professional experiences. In this way patient-reported qualitative findings were merged with professionals’ experience. Group discussion data were analyzed concurrently. A preliminary clinical intervention model was developed and refined by means of small scale clinical tests conducted by the team as well as other focus groups made up of different palliative care teams. Results: The applicability of QOA will be presented. A particular dimension identified in the process is participatory aspects related to the shared commitment between the researchers´ goal with the model and the team’s goal of facilitating clinical development. Such participatory aspects will be elaborated upon and related to the Participatory Action Research tradition. Discussion: The significance of relating QOA to Participatory Action Research will be reflected upon.

  • Reflective exploration of Beekman's participant experience.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Qualitative health research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 20:2, s. 273-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we explored the researcher as an instrument in phenomenological research. To contribute to the discussion on phenomenological research methods for use in fieldwork, we explored Ton Beekman's participant experience (1986) as a way of enhancing the rigor and quality of data construction in phenomenological fieldwork. Beekman's approach is characterized by dialogue, bodily presence, being there, time and space dimensions, social and personal meaning, and interpretations that are close to life. An example from fieldwork in palliative cancer care is presented, in which we used reflective analysis to discern the cocreating aspect of participant experience. We recommend further investigation of cocreating participant experience as part of phenomenological fieldwork.

  • Searching for knowledge and understanding while living with impending death : a phenomenological case study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : Co-Action Publishing. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 2:4, s. 217-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, expression of the quest for knowledge and understanding while living with the threat of fatal cancer is explored. By means of a case study, recurrent narrative interviews and participant observations were performed with one 71-year-old man and the oncology nurse taking care of him. The data were analysed phenomenologically and the results disclose three paths during the illness trajectory at the end-of-life; the stable path, the turning point and the waiting. Existential uncertainty is managed in the stable path, while confronting existential uncertainty is characterized by the turning point, and there is a shift towards living existential certainty during the waiting. The significance of openness towards the intertwinement of the experiential and existential dimensions of living in end-of-life care is emphasized. Research into patients' multidimensional learning at the end of life is needed in order to expand knowledge of how the patient makes sense of their situation particularly in relation to the information they receive from palliative care professionals
