  • The GenTree Platform : growth traits and tree-level environmental data in 12 European forest tree species
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: GigaScience. - : Oxford University Press. - 2047-217X. ; 10:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Progress in the field of evolutionary forest ecology has been hampered by the huge challenge of phenotyping trees across their ranges in their natural environments, and the limitation in high-resolution environmental information.Findings: The GenTree Platform contains phenotypic and environmental data from 4,959 trees from 12 ecologically and economically important European forest tree species: Abies alba Mill. (silver fir), Betula pendula Roth. (silver birch), Fagus sylvatica L. (European beech), Picea abies (L.) H. Karst (Norway spruce), Pinus cembra L. (Swiss stone pine), Pinus halepensis Mill. (Aleppo pine), Pinus nigra Arnold (European black pine), Pinus pinaster Aiton (maritime pine), Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine), Populus nigra L. (European black poplar), Taxus baccata L. (English yew), and Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. (sessile oak). Phenotypic (height, diameter at breast height, crown size, bark thickness, biomass, straightness, forking, branch angle, fructification), regeneration, environmental in situ measurements (soil depth, vegetation cover, competition indices), and environmental modeling data extracted by using bilinear interpolation accounting for surrounding conditions of each tree (precipitation, temperature, insolation, drought indices) were obtained from trees in 194 sites covering the species' geographic ranges and reflecting local environmental gradients. Conclusion: The GenTree Platform is a new resource for investigating ecological and evolutionary processes in forest trees. The coherent phenotyping and environmental characterization across 12 species in their European ranges allow for a wide range of analyses from forest ecologists, conservationists, and macro-ecologists. Also, the data here presented can be linked to the GenTree Dendroecological collection, the GenTree Leaf Trait collection, and the GenTree Genomic collection presented elsewhere, which together build the largest evolutionary forest ecology data collection available.

  • Synthetic photometry of OB star clusters with stochastically sampled IMFs : analysis of models and HST observations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 509:1, s. 522-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a pilot library of synthetic NUV, U, B, V, and I photometry of star clusters with stochastically sampled IMFs and ionized gas for initial masses, Mi = 103, 104, and 105 M⊙; t = 1, 3, 4, and 8 Myr; Z = 0.014 and Z = 0.002; and log(US) = −2 and −3. We compare the library with predictions from deterministic models and observations of isolated low-mass (<104 M⊙) star clusters with co-spatial compact H II regions. The clusters are located in NGC 7793, one of the nearest galaxies observed as part of the HST LEGUS and Hα-LEGUS surveys. (1) For model magnitudes that only account for the stars: (a) the residual |deterministic mag - median stochastic mag| can be ≥0.5 mag, even for Mi = 105 M⊙; and (b) the largest spread in stochastic magnitudes occurs when Wolf–Rayet stars are present. (2) For Mi = 105 M⊙: (a) the median stochastic mag with gas can be >1.0 mag more luminous than the median stochastic magnitude without gas; and (b) nebular emission lines can contribute with >50 per cent and >30 per cent to the total emission in the V and I bands, respectively. (3) Age-dating OB-star clusters via deterministic tracks in the U-B versus V-I plane is highly uncertain at Z = 0.014 for Mi ∼ 103 M⊙ and Z = 0.002 for Mi ∼ 103–105 M⊙. (4) For low-mass clusters, the V-band extinction derived with stochastic models significantly depends on the value of log(US). (5) The youngest clusters tend to have higher extinction. (6) The majority of clusters have multi-peaked age PDFs. (7) Finally, we discuss the importance of characterizing the true variance in the number of stars per mass bin in nature.

  • Characterization of a 8q21.11 Microdeletion Syndrome Associated with Intellectual Disability and a Recognizable Phenotype
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 89:2, s. 295-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report eight unrelated individuals with intellectual disability and overlapping submicroscopic deletions of 8q21.11 (0.66-13.55 Mb in size). The deletion was familial in one and simplex in seven individuals. The phenotype was remarkably similar and consisted of a round face with full cheeks, a high forehead, ptosis, cornea opacities, an underdeveloped alae, a short philtrum, a cupid's bow of the upper lip, down-turned corners of the mouth, micrognathia, low-set and prominent ears, and mild finger and toe anomalies (camptodactyly, syndactyly, and broadening of the first rays). Intellectual disability, hypotonia, decreased balance, sensorineural hearing loss, and unusual behavior were frequently observed. A high-resolution oligonucleotide array showed different proximal and distal breakpoints in all of the individuals. Sequencing studies in three of the individuals revealed that proximal and distal breakpoints were located in unique sequences with no apparent homology. The smallest region of overlap was a 539.7 kb interval encompassing three genes: a Zinc Finger Homeobox 4 (ZFHX4), one microRNA of unknown function, and one nonfunctional pseudogen. ZFHX4 encodes a transcription factor expressed in the adult human brain, skeletal muscle, and liver. It has been suggested as a candidate gene for congenital bilateral isolated ptosis. Our results suggest that the 8q21.11 submicroscopic deletion represents a clinically recognizable entity and that a haploinsufficient gene or genes within the minimal deletion region could underlie this syndrome.

  • District heating investment costs and allocation of local resources for EU28 in 2030 and 2050 : D4.5
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Efficiency in the heat sector and the built environment can be achieved by building retrofits, the replacement of buildings, and the development of district heating as a means of structural energy efficiency. Hereby, excess heat and low-grade renewable heat sources can be integrated in the heat sector. The present report describes the future heat sector of Europe from end-use via infrastructure to heat sources. Future heat demands on national level have been modelled by sEEnergies project partners. In the present work, these demands are being distributed to future urban areas. Population forecasts have been combined with local empirical data to new 100m resolution population grids. They form the basis for the calculation of heat demands for the years 2030 and 2050 on the same geographical level. Potential areas, where district heating could be developed, have been zoned as prospective supply districts (PSDs) and basic statistics of heat demand have been calculated. Then, based on empirical district heating network data from existing district heating networks in Denmark, a new investment cost model for distribution and service pipes has been developed. Based on previous work in the Heat Roadmap Europe research project, the cost model has been improved with a better understanding of the concept of effective width. With the integration of country-specific construction cost data this results in an improved district heat distribution capital cost model for all Member States of the European Union plus the United Kingdom. The spatially explicit combination of district heat potentials and costs results in cost-supply curves for all countries as the basis for the assessment of the economic potential of future district heating. Finally, available excess heat sources from industry, waste incineration, wastewater treatment plants, and current powerplant locations are being allocated to prospective supply districts. Renewable heat potentials, including deep geothermal heat, solar thermal heat, and residual, local biomass, have also been assigned to these prospective heat supply areas. The results of the present work have been published as a web map.

  • Low dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is associated with worse lung function in women
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Respiratory Journal. - : European Respiratory Society. - 0903-1936 .- 1399-3003. ; 52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • DHEA-S is the most abundant circulating steroid hormone in humans. Low concentrations of DHEA-S have been linked to several chronic diseases, but it is unclear if DHEA-S affects respiratory health. As part of the ALEC project [EU H2020 grant #633212], the associations of DHEA-S concentrations with lung function levels and decline were evaluated in women from the general population.Serum DHEA-S concentrations were measured in 2,250 women (28-57 years) participating in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey in 1999-2002. Associations of DHEA-S concentrations (categorized by age-adjusted quintiles) with FEV1, FVC, and the FEV1/FVC ratio were investigated using linear regression models adjusted for age, height, active and passive smoking, BMI, physical activity, education, menopausal status, and with study centre included as a random effect. Associations of DHEA-S concentrations with yearly decline in lung function (ΔFEV1, ΔFVC, ΔFEV1/FVC) were assessed in 1,340 women with spirometry data at follow-up in 2010-2014.The median (25th-75th percentile) concentration of DHEA-S was 4.2 µmol/L (2.9-6.0). The concentration of DHEA-S was significantly higher in current smokers and steadily declined with age. In fully adjusted models, women with low DHEA-S concentrations (below the 1st quintile) at baseline had worse FEV1 (-80mL, p<0.001) and FVC (-79mL, p=0.001) compared to women with higher DHEA-S levels. Low DHEA-S concentrations at baseline were associated with ΔFEV1/FVC (-0.08%/year, p=0.006), but not with ΔFEV1 or ΔFVC.The results suggest that low DHEA-S concentrations are associated with worse lung function in women, but have limited effects on lung function decline.

  • Low serum DHEA-S is associated with impaired lung function in women
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: EClinicalMedicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2589-5370. ; 23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Emerging evidence suggests that androgens and estrogens have a role in respiratory health, but it is largely unknown whether levels of these hormones can affect lung function in adults from the general population. This study investigated whether serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), a key precursor of both androgens and estrogens in peripheral tissues, was related to lung function in adult women participating in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS). Methods: Lung function and serum DHEA-S concentrations were measured in n = 2,045 and n = 1,725 women in 1999–2002 and in 2010–2013, respectively. Cross-sectional associations of DHEA-S levels (expressed as age-adjusted z-score) with spirometric outcomes were investigated, adjusting for smoking habits, body mass index, menopausal status, and use of corticosteroids. Longitudinal associations of DHEA-S levels in 1999–2002 with incidence of restrictive pattern and airflow limitation in 2010–2013 were also assessed. Findings: Women with low DHEA-S (z-score<-1) had lower FEV1 (% of predicted, adjusted difference: -2.2; 95%CI: -3.5 to -0.9) and FVC (-1.7; 95%CI: -2.9 to -0.5) and were at a greater risk of having airflow limitation and restrictive pattern on spirometry than women with higher DHEA-S levels. In longitudinal analyses, low DHEA-S at baseline was associated with a greater incidence of airflow limitation after an 11-years follow-up (incidence rate ratio, 3.43; 95%CI: 1.91 to 6.14). Interpretation: Low DHEA-S levels in women were associated with impaired lung function and a greater risk of developing airflow limitation later in adult life. Our findings provide new evidence supporting a role of DHEA-S in respiratory health. Funding: EU H2020, grant agreement no.633212 © 2020 The Authors

  • Biodistribution of 210Po in seafood and risk assessment for consumers in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Food Control. - 0956-7135. ; 151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seafood consumption per capita, in Sweden, is larger than World and European average. Although, 36% of Swedes consume seafood meals at least two times per week, the Swedish National Food Agency advises the necessity to increase this ratio. Seafood is one of the main entrances of 210Po in the human food chain. Due to the high radiotoxicity, the intake of 210Po plays an important role in the human health, even in extremely small quantities. In this study, 114 seafood samples representing 52 different marine species were analyzed. The biodistribution of 210Po in seafood species were not uniformly distributed being higher in digestive system and gonads, and lower in seafood muscle. The activity concentration of 210Po in fish ranged between 0.01 and 26 Bq/kg with an average value of 4 Bq/kg, whereas in shellfish fluctuated between 0.1 and 239 Bq/kg, with a mean concentration of 18 Bq/kg. In general, the activity concentration of 210Po in processed products were lower than fresh samples due to the decay of 210Po from seafood capture to purchase. However, in boiled seafood such as Norway Lobster, with short elapsed time from collection to purchase, the boil samples presented higher activity concentration of 210Po than fresh products. The results of the study showed that the annual intake of 210Po via seafood consumption in Sweden exponentially increased by age and it was slightly higher in males than females. As a result, the annual committed dose ranged from 60 to 154 μSv, with an average value of 103 ± 31 μSv, being controlled by fish consumption below 14 years old and by seafood consumption above 14 years old. Finally, the committed effective dose could increase up to 479 μSv/y for population group with higher seafood consumption.

  • Biodistribution of naturally occurring radionuclides and radiocesium in wild European perch (Perca fluviatilis).
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ecotoxicology and environmental safety. - 1090-2414. ; 260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wild European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is one of the most important freshwater fish species, in Sweden, due to its widespread and his value for recreational fishing. Little it is known regarding the biodistribution of naturally occurring radionuclides such as 238U, 234U, 226Ra, 210Po in perch. Therefore, in this study, perches from five lakes located in different counties in Sweden were collected to investigate the biodistribution of 238U, 234U, 226Ra, 210Po and 137Cs in organs and tissues of perch as well as their radiological impact. The results showed that uranium radionuclides ranged between 0.1 and 6Bq/kg with an average value of 1.1±1.5Bq/kg. 226Ra varied from 0.4 to 8Bq/kg with a mean concentration of 1.7±1.9Bq/kg. The ranged of 210Po was 0.5 - 250 Bq/kg, with an average value of 24±52Bq/kg. On the other hand, the highest activity concentration of 137Cs, 151±1 Bq/kg, was detected in muscle samples of perch from Redsjösjön lake. For uranium radionuclides and 226Ra uptake from water is the main source whereas for 210Po and 137Cs the uptake is controlled by the perch diet. Regarding naturally occurring radionuclides, the perch tended to accumulated uranium radionuclides in fins, gills, and skin; 226Ra in bones, fins and skin and 210Po in the organs linked to digestive system. Finally, in case of consumption, it is advised the consumption of skinned fillets of perch due to the higher bioaccumulation of the radionuclides investigated in the skin and scales.

  • Concentration of radionuclides in Swedish market basket and its radiological implications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Food Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-7135. ; 133B
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The entrance of radionuclides to the human food chain together with the ingestion favour tissues deposition of radionuclides throughout the human body, which may have long-term implications for radiation doses. That affects world population, since it represents approximately 12% of the annual effective dose received for the public. This contribution will be quite variable depending on the food habits, food origin and the background levels of the place of residence. It is therefore necessary to monitor the food to be able to control and quantify the risk of exposure of the public. A wide range of food products (vegetables, fruits, meat, fish etc.) have been collected and analysed by different radiometric techniques in order to measure the activity concentration of naturally occurring and anthropogenic radionuclides (40K, 137Cs, 210Po, 226Ra, 228Ra, 234U and 238U). The results of the investigation highlighted that the average committed effective dose from one year's food consumption in Sweden ranged from 82 to 142 μSv for children and it was around 134 μSv for adults. Additionally, considering the consumption percentile 95 (P95), the total ingestion exposure could raise up to 560 μSv/y for children and 340 μSv/y for adults. In all population groups analysed, the internal exposure was mainly controlled by the intake of 210Po (∼ 94–98%), in particular via seafood consumption for example, as a result of the high levels of 210Po in shellfish such as shrimp (30 ± 2 Bq/kg) or blue mussel (55 ± 7 Bq/kg).

  • Radiological impact of naturally occurring radionuclides in bottled water
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Food Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-7135. ; 130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consumption of bottled water is increasing year after year in Europe. Due to the local geology from where the water is extracted; bottled water could be enhanced with radionuclides. This study focuses on the activity concentrations of 210Po, 210Pb, 226Ra, 228Ra, 234U and 238U in bottled water available in the Swedish market, to assess the radiological impact to different age groups. The results showed that among the 26 brands studied, only three could exceed the threshold value for drinking water: 0.1 mSv/year. For two brands, the dose was mainly due to the activity concentrations of 238U and 234U being up to 714 and 1162 mBq/L, respectively. While for one brand, the dose was mainly due to the activity concentration of both 210Po and 210Pb being around 100 mBq/L. For the remainder brands, 228Ra was the main contributor to the committed effective dose.
