    • Erla Hovilainen-Husgafvel (b. Lund), a Finland-Swede ethnologist (1907-1984) returned in June-July 1944 to the small fishing community of Tankar, an island in the outer archipelago off the city of Kokkola/Karleby, after many previous visits there, to finish the research for her book Ro, ro till fiskeskär ('Row, Row to the Fishermen's Island') that appeared the next year. Her documentary consists of two parts: the history of fishing on the island with the eighteenth-century wooden church and the lighthouse as its major narrative icons, and her interviews with three fishermen and their family members. Although the country is at war, it is only indirectly present in her account. I read Hovilainen's chronicle as an allegory of an ideal utopian world, where the politics is at the hands of the people, where pragmatism overrules both religious and secular conventions, where language is free from hierarchical structures. Hovilainen, I explain, transliterates the speech forms of her informants into distinct personal voices. It is an allegory of a community that should exist.

    •   Sara Lidman wrote her second autobiographical African novel, Med fem diamanter  ("With Five Diamonds"), during a prolonged sojourn in Kenya (1962-1963) where she first lived in Kisumu, in the Nyanza province, near Lake Victoria, before moving to Njeri in Gikuyland. She was accompanied by Wambui Njonjo, the country's first school inspector. The Njonjo family was close to the Kenyattas. The question in the title of the essay, “Who is the Thief? Sara Lidman in Postcolonial Kenya?”, points at the post-colonial threshold dilemma of Kenyans being both perpatrators and victims of their own fate, freed from the colonial bonds but reintroduced to economic forms of western dependence. I examine two aspects of her allegorical chronicling of Kenya 1958-1963 and the symbolic killing of Thiongo, the homosexual, by his brother Wachira, the boy pining in the servitude of both Gikuyu patriarchy and the greed of western capitalism. The two aspects relate to the dynamics and ambivalence of power. In the first section I demonstrate how 'stealing' – both as an act of aggression and one of liberation – is manifested in cultural and linguistic artefacts, in the textures of women's kangas, in a Luo legend, in Christian mission. As a postcolonial writer Lidman is unique for her time in transliterating and contextualizing (not translating) Gikuyu and Kiswahili words, proverbs and stories. In the second section I examine how 'love' or the idealization of 'love', heterosexual and homosexual, deteriorates under the pressure of 'thieving'. In Lidman's ideal world androgynity is central. Med fem diamanter is a Kenyan novel written in Swedish.

    • These lines are a recognition of Nadine Gordimer's and the Swedish writer Sara Lidman's life-long friendship that began in 1960 with Lidman visiting Johannesburg. Lidman's novel, Jag och min son ('I and My Son') based on her time in apartheid's South Africa, its complex thematics of guilt and fury, bears Gordimer's signature.

    • The article “Translation as Language” is divided into two parts. In the first I discuss the circumstances why, generally speaking, translation fails; why it succeeds; and what I mean by the premise embedded in the title. In the second, I analyze the translational flow between the Finnish poets Eino Leino and Elmer Diktonius (from Finnish into Swedish); an oral section collected from Väinö Linna's Tuntematon Sotilas and its translation from a Finnish dialect into a Finland-Swedish dialect by N-B Stormbom and Sven-Olof Högnäs; and finally two translations of 'Runo' 32, lines 251-272 in Kalevala, the first by Lars and Mats Huldén (Swedish) and the second by Eino Friberg (English). I discuss aspects of asymmetrical translation which may be the consequences of writer idolatry (the genius and the drunkard) or obsession with illusive and fundamentalist concepts such as the dichotomy of source and target, and the romances of 'faithfulness' and the 'origin.' Translations that maintain an interaction between the voices, that respect their individual Otherness, share, in metaphorical terms, a common language. In my analysis I define features that I call 'similarity in Otherness,' translation as language, in Leino--Diktonius, Linna--Stormbom/Högnäs, and Kalevala--Huldén/Friberg.
