  • Toward the limit of nuclear binding on the N = Z line : Spectroscopy of Cd-96
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 99:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A gamma -decaying isomeric state (tau(1/2) = 197(-17)(+19) ns) has been identified in Cd-96, which is one alpha particle away from the last known bound N = Z nucleus, Sn-100. Comparison of the results with shell-model calculations has allowed a tentative experimental level scheme to be deduced and the isomer to be interpreted as a medium-spin negative-parity spin trap based on the coupling of isoscalar (T = 0) and isovector (T = 1) neutron-proton pairs. The data also suggest evidence for the population of a 9(+) T = 1 state, which is predicted by shell-model calculations to be yrast. Such a low-lying T = 1 state, which is unknown in lighter mass even-even self-conjugate nuclei, can also be interpreted in terms of the coupling of T = 0 and T = 1 neutron-proton pairs.

  • First observation of the decay of a 15(-) seniority v=4 isomer in Sn-128
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 83:4, s. 044328-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isomeric states in the semimagic Sn128-130 isotopes were populated in the fragmentation of a Xe-136 beam on a Be-9 target at an energy of 750 A.MeV. The decay of an isomeric state in Sn-128 at an excitation energy of 4098 keV has been observed. Its half live has been determined to be T-1/2 = 220(30) ns from the time distributions of the delayed gamma rays emitted in its decay. gamma gamma coincidence relations were analyzed in order to establish the decay pattern of the newly established state toward the known (7(-)) and (10(+)) isomers at excitation energies of 2092 and 2492 keV, respectively. Based on a comparison with results of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations the new isomeric state is proposed to have the nu h(11/2)(-3)d(3/2)(-1) configuration with the four neutron holes in Sn-132 maximally aligned to a total spin of I-pi = 15(-).

  • Structure of Neutron-rich Nuclei Around the N=126 Closed Shell; the Yrast Structure of 205Au up to Spin-parity I = (19/2+)
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 42:3, s. 489-493
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heavy neutron-rich nuclei have been populated through the relativistic fragmentation of a Pb-208(82) beam at E/A = 1 GeV on a 2.5 g/cm(2) thick Be target. The synthesised nuclei were selected and identified in-flight using the fragment separator at GSI. Approximately 300 ns after production, the selected nuclei were implanted in an similar to 8 mm thick perspex stopper, positioned at the centre of the RISING gamma-ray detector spectrometer array. A previously unreported isomer with a half-life T-1/2 = 163(5) ns has been observed in the N = 126 closed-shell nucleus Au-205(79). Through gamma-ray singles and gamma-gamma coincidence analysis a level scheme was established. The comparison with a shell model calculation tentatively identifies the spin-parity of the excited states, including the isomer itself, which is found to be I-pi = (19/2(+)).

  • First Results from the Stopped RISING Campaign at GSI: The Mapping of Isomeric Decays in Highly Exotic Nuclei
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 0094-243X. - 9780735413283 ; 899, s. 19-22
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first results from the Stopped Beam RISING experimental campaign performed at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany, are presented. RISING (Rare ISotope INvestigations at GSI) constitutes a major new experimental program in European nuclear structure physics research aimed at using relativistic‐energy, projectile‐fragmentation reactions to study nuclei with exotic proton‐to‐neutron ratios. This paper introduces the physics aims of the Stopped RISING collaboration and presents some technical details and initial results from experiments using the RISING array to study decays from metastable nuclear states in both proton and neutron‐rich nuclei.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 787:1-4, s. 491-498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The preliminary results from the RISING Stopped Beam Isomer Campaign are presented, with specific focus on results of the initial experiment to investigate isomeric decays along the N=Z line around A similar to 80-90 following the projectile fragmentation of a Ag-107 primary beam at an energy of 750 MeV per nucleon. A description of the technical aspects behind the design of the RISING array is presented, together with evidence for previously unreported isomeric decays in Tc-87,Tc-88 and the N=Z nuclei Nb-82(41) and Tc-86(43).

  • K-isomers in very neutron-rich nuclei around mass 180
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. Topical Issues. - 0281-1847. ; T88, s. 72-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • gamma-spectroscopy methods have been used to search for microsecond isomers among the fragmentation products of a 1 GeV/nucleon Pb-208 beam. In particular the population of the known K-pi = 35/2(-) isomer in W-179 has been investigated and several new isomeric decays have been found for neutron rich nuclei in the A approximate to 180-200 mass region. The ground state band of the neutron rich N = 116 system of W-190 has been identified for the first time and we discuss its structure in comparison to neighboring systems.

  • 16(+) Spin-Gap Isomer in (96)Cd
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 107:17, s. 172502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A beta-decaying high-spin isomer in (96)Cd, with a half-life T(1/2) = 0.29(-0.10)(+0.11) s, has been established in a stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at GSI (RISING) experiment. The nuclei were produced using the fragmentation of a primary beam of (124)Xe on a (9)Be target. From the half-life and the observed gamma decays in the daughter nucleus, (96)Ag, we conclude that the beta-decaying state is the long predicted 16(+) "spin-gap'' isomer. Shell-model calculations, using the Gross-Frenkel interaction and the pi nu(p(1/2,)g(9/2)) model space, show that the isoscalar component of the neutron-proton interaction is essential to explain the origin of the isomer. Core excitations across the N = Z = 50 gaps and the Gamow-Teller strength, Bd(GT) distributions have been studied via large-scale shell-model calculations using the pi nu(g, d, s) model space to compare with the experimental B(GT) value obtained from the half-life of the isomer.

  • Influence of the np interaction on the beta decay of Pd-94
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 86:4, s. 041301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results from stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at the GSI (RISING) experiment based on the detection of gamma-ray transitions following the beta decay of Pd-94. A comparison between the measured low-lying level scheme of Rh-94 and the prediction from shell-model calculations reveals the important roles of the g(7/2) and g(9/2) orbitals in explaining the structural features. The low values of the Gamow-Teller strengths B(GT) can be attributed to the influence of the neutron-proton interaction, which gives rise to an increased seniority mixing for the nuclear states, thereby leading to a fragmentation of the strength to several daughter levels. These results provide further strong indications that Pd-94 resides in the middle of a structural transition region in the Pd isotopes as the N = Z line is approached.

  • Isomeric Decay Studies In Neutron-Rich N Approximate To 126 Nuclei
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal Of Modern Physics E-Nuclear Physics. - 0218-3013. ; 18:4, s. 1002-1007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via relativistic energy fragmentation of a E/A= 1 GeV Pb-208 beam. The nuclei of interest were selected and identified by a fragment separator and then implanted in a passive plastic stopper. Delayed. rays following internal isomeric decays were detected by the RISING array. Experimental information was obtained on a number of nuclei with Z=73-80 (Ta-Hg), providing new information both on the prolate-oblate transitional region as well as on the N=126 closed shell nuclei.

  • Isomeric States Observed in Heavy Neutron-rich Nuclei Populated in the Fragmentation of a 208Pb Beam
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 84:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via the fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV Pb-208(82) beam. Secondary fragments were separated and identified and subsequently implanted in a passive stopper. By the detection of delayed gamma rays, isomeric decays associated with these nuclei have been identified. A total of 49 isomers were detected, with the majority of them observed for the first time. The newly discovered isomers are in Hg-204,205(80), Au-201,202,204,205(79), Pt-197,203,204(78), Ir-195,199-203(77), Os-193,197-199(76), Re-196(75), W-190,191(74), and Ta-189(73). Possible level schemes are constructed and the structure of the nuclei discussed. To aid the interpretation, shell-model as well as BCS calculations were performed.
