  • Association of ambient air pollution with the prevalence and incidence of COPD
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Respiratory Journal. - : European Respiratory Society. - 0903-1936 .- 1399-3003. ; 44:3, s. 614-626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of air pollution in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains uncertain. The aim was to assess the impact of chronic exposure to air pollution on COPD in four cohorts using the standardised ESCAPE exposure estimates. Annual average particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and road traffic exposure were assigned to home addresses using land-use regression models. COPD was defined by NHANES reference equation (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) less than the lower limit of normal) and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease criterion (FEV1/FVC <0.70) and categorised by severity in non-asthmatics.We included 6550 subjects with assigned NOx and 3692 with PM measures. COPD was not associated with NO2 or PM10 in any individual cohort. In meta-analyses only NO2, NOx, PM10 and the traffic indicators were positively, although not significantly, associated with COPD. The only statistically significant associations were seen in females (COPD prevalence using GOLD: OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.11-2.23; and incidence: OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.21-2.68).None of the principal results were statistically significant, the weak positive associations of exposure with COPD and the significant subgroup findings need to be evaluated in further well standardised cohorts followed up for longer time, and with time-matched exposure assignments.

  • Multiple tree-ring chronologies (ring width, delta C-13 and delta O-18) reveal dry and rainy season signals of rainfall in Indonesia
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 73, s. 170-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climatic hazards, such as severe droughts and floods, affect extensive areas across monsoon Asia and can have profound impacts on the populations of that region. The area surrounding Indonesia, including large portions of the eastern Indian Ocean and Java Sea, plays a key role in the global climate system because of the enormous heat and moisture exchange that occurs between the ocean and atmosphere there. Here, we evaluate the influence of rainfall variability on multiple tree-ring parameters of teak (Tectona grandis) trees growing in a lowland rain forest in Central Java (Indonesia). We assess the potential of, annually resolved, tree-ring width, stable carbon (delta C-13) and oxygen (delta O-18) isotope records to improve our understanding of the Asian monsoon variability. Climate response analysis with regional, monthly rainfall data reveals that all three tree-ring parameters are significantly correlated to rainfall, albeit during different monsoon seasons. Precipitation in the beginning of the rainy season (Sep-Nov) is important for tree-ring width, confirming previous studies. Compared to ring width, the stable isotope records possess a higher degree of common signal, especially during portions of the peak rainy season (delta C-13: Dec-May; delta O-18: Nov-Feb) and are negatively correlated to rainfall. In addition, tree-ring delta O-18 also responds positively to peak dry season rainfall, although the delta O-13 rainy season signal is stronger and more time-stable. The correlations of opposite sign reflect the distinct seasonal contrast of the delta O-18 signatures in rainfall (O-18(Pre)) during the dry (O-18-enriched rain) and rainy (O-18-depleted rain) seasons. This difference in O-18(Pre) signal reflects the combination of two signals in the annual tree-ring delta O-18 record. Highly resolved intra-annual 8180 isotope analyses suggest that the signals of dry and rainy season can be distinguished clearly. Thereby reconstructions can improve our understanding of variations and trends of the hydrological cycle over the Indonesian archipelago.

  • How to e-mental health : a guideline for researchers and practitioners using digital technology in the context of mental health
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Mental Health. - : Springer Nature. - 2731-6076. ; 1:8, s. 542-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite an exponentially growing number of digital or e-mental health services, methodological guidelines for research and practical implementation are scarce. Here we aim to promote the methodological quality, evidence and long-term implementation of technical innovations in the healthcare system. This expert consensus is based on an iterative Delphi adapted process and provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art guidelines and practical recommendations on the most relevant topics in e-mental health assessment and intervention. Covering three objectives, that is, development, study specifics and intervention evaluation, 11 topics were addressed and co-reviewed by 25 international experts and a think tank in the field of e-mental health. This expert consensus provides a comprehensive essence of scientific knowledge and practical recommendations for e-mental health researchers and clinicians. This way, we aim to enhance the promise of e-mental health: low-threshold access to mental health treatment worldwide.

  • Identification and immunocytochemical localization of proctolin in pericardial organs of the shore crab, Carcinus maenas.
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Peptides. - : Elsevier. - 0196-9781 .- 1873-5169. ; 7:1, s. 67-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The occurrence of proctolin (Arg-Tyr-Leu-Pro-Thr) in crab neurohemal pericardial organs (POs) has been demonstrated by isolation of the pentapeptide by HPLC and manual microsequencing according to the DABITC-PITC double coupling technique. From one pair of POs approximately 5.4 pmol were obtained (= 45 pmol/mg protein). Immunocytochemically, an extensive system of positive structures was found in both whole mount preparations and semithin sections, consisting of numerous varicose fibres of varying diameter and many knoblike neurosecretory terminals abutting upon the epineurium of the PO trunks. The relatively high concentration in the POs as well as the pattern of proctolin-positive fibres and terminals clearly suggest a neurohormonal role of the pentapeptide in decapod crustaceans.

  • Cleaning at Home and at Work in Relation to Lung Function Decline and Airway Obstruction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. - 1073-449X .- 1535-4970. ; 197:9, s. 1157-1163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rationale: Cleaning tasks may imply exposure to chemical agents with potential harmful effects to the respiratory system, and increased risk of asthma and respiratory symptoms among professional cleaners and in persons cleaning at home has been reported. Long-term consequences of cleaning agents on respiratory health are, however, not well described. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate long-term effects of occupational cleaning and cleaning at home on lung function decline and airway obstruction. Methods: The European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) investigated a multicenter population-based cohort at three time points over 20 years. A total of 6,235 participants with at least one lung function measurement from 22 study centers, who in ECRHS II responded to questionnaire modules concerning cleaning activities between ECRHS I and ECRHS II, were included. The data were analyzed with mixed linear models adjusting for potential confounders.Measurements and Main Results: As compared with women not engaged in cleaning (ΔFEV1 = −18.5 ml/yr), FEV1 declined more rapidly in women responsible for cleaning at home (−22.1; P = 0.01) and occupational cleaners (−22.4; P = 0.03). The same was found for decline in FVC (ΔFVC = −8.8 ml/yr; −13.1, P = 0.02; and −15.9, P = 0.002; respectively). Both cleaning sprays and other cleaning agents were associated with accelerated FEV1 decline (−22.0, P = 0.04; and −22.9, P = 0.004; respectively). Cleaning was not significantly associated with lung function decline in men or with FEV1/FVC decline or airway obstruction. Conclusions: Women cleaning at home or working as occupational cleaners had accelerated decline in lung function, suggesting that exposures related to cleaning activities may constitute a risk to long-term respiratory health.

  • Carnegie Supernova Project : Observations of Type IIn supernovae
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 555, s. A10-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. The observational diversity displayed by various Type IIn supernovae (SNe IIn) is explored and quantified. In doing so, a more coherent picture ascribing the variety of observed SNe IIn types to particular progenitor scenarios is sought. Methods. Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) optical and near-infrared light curves and visual-wavelength spectroscopy of the Type IIn SNe 2005kj, 2006aa, 2006bo, 2006qq, and 2008fq are presented. Combined with previously published observations of the Type IIn SNe 2005ip and 2006jd, the full CSP sample is used to derive physical parameters that describe the nature of the interaction between the expanding SN ejecta and the circumstellar material (CSM). Results. For each SN of our sample, we find counterparts, identifying objects similar to SNe 1994W (SN 2006bo), 1998S (SN 2008fq), and 1988Z (SN 2006qq). We present the unprecedented initial u-band plateau of SN 2006aa, and its peculiar late-time luminosity and temperature evolution. For each SN, mass-loss rates of 10(-4)-10(-2) M-circle dot yr(-1) are derived, assuming the CSM was formed by steady winds. Typically wind velocities of a few hundred km s(-1) are also computed. Conclusions. The CSP SN IIn sample seems to be divided into subcategories rather than to have exhibited a continuum of observational properties. The wind and mass-loss parameters would favor a luminous blue variable progenitor scenario. However, the assumptions made to derive those parameters strongly influence the results, and therefore, other progenitor channels behind SNe IIn cannot be excluded at this time.

  • Supernova 2008J : early time observations of a heavily reddened SN 2002ic-like transient
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 545, s. L7-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: We provide additional observational evidence that some Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) show signatures of circumstellar interaction (CSI) with hydrogen-rich material. Methods: Early phase optical and near-infrared (NIR) light curves and spectroscopy of SN 2008J obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project are studied and compared to those of SNe 2002ic and 2005gj. Our NIR spectrum is the first obtained for a 2002ic-like object extending up to 2.2 μm. A published high-resolution spectrum is used to provide insight on the circumstellar material (CSM). Results: SN 2008J is found to be affected by AV ~ 1.9 mag of extinction and to closely resemble SN 2002ic. Spectral and color comparison to SNe 2002ic and 2005gj suggests RV < 3.1. Spectral decomposition reveals the underlying SN emission matches a 1991T-like event and, since SN 2008J is as luminous as SN 2005gj (Vmax = -20.3 mag), we conclude that their CSI emissions are similarly robust. The high-resolution spectrum reveals narrow emission lines produced from un-shocked gas characterized by a wind velocity of ~50 km s-1. We conclude that SN 2008J best matches an explosion of a SN Ia that interacts with its CSM. Based on observations collected at the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere, Chile (ESO Programme 080.A-0516).Figure 4 and Tables 1-6 are available in electronic form at http://www.aanda.org

  • Adsorption of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(is an element of-caprolactone) copolymers at the silica-water interface
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 21:7, s. 2930-2940
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adsorption of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) copolymers in aqueous solution on silica and glass surfaces has been investigated by flow microcalorimetry, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), surface forces, and complementary techniques. The studied copolymers consist of a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block of M-n, = 5000 and a hydrophobic polyester block of poly(E-caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) (PMCL) of M-n in the 950-2200 range. Compared to homoPEO, the adsorption of the copolymers is significantly increased by the connection of PEO to an aliphatic polyester block. According to calorimetric experiments, the copolymers interact with the surface mainly through the hydrophilic block. At low surface coverage, the PEO block interacts with the surface such that both PEO and PCL chains are exposed to the aqueous solution. At high surface coverage, a dense copolymer layer is observed with the PEO blocks oriented toward the solution. The structure of the copolymer layer has been analyzed by neutron scattering using the contrast matching technique and by tapping mode atomic force microscopy. The experimental observations agree with the coadsorption of micelles and free copolymer chains at the interface.
