  • Helicobacter Pylori Virulence Factor Cytotoxin-Associated Gene A (CagA) Induces Vascular Calcification in Coronary Artery Smooth Muscle Cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International journal of molecular sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 1422-0067. ; 24:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been associated with cardiovascular diseases. The pro-inflammatory H. pylori virulence factor cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) has been detected in serum exosomes of H. pylori-infected subjects and may exert systemic effects throughout the cardiovascular system. The role of H. pylori and CagA in vascular calcification was hitherto unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the vascular effects of CagA through human coronary artery smooth muscle cell (CASMC) osteogenic and pro-inflammatory effector gene expression as well as interleukin 1β secretion and cellular calcification. CagA upregulated bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP-2) associated with an osteogenic CASMC phenotype switch and induced increased cellular calcification. Furthermore, a pro-inflammatory response was observed. These results support that H. pylori may contribute to vascular calcification through CagA rendering CASMCs osteogenic and inducing calcification.

  • Association between cardiometabolic disease and severe COVID-19: a nationwide case-control study of patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMJ open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 11:2, s. e044486-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The risks associated with diabetes, obesity and hypertension for severe COVID-19 may be confounded and differ by sociodemographic background. We assessed the risks associated with cardiometabolic factors for severe COVID-19 when accounting for socioeconomic factors and in subgroups by age, sex and region of birth. Methods and resultsIn this nationwide case–control study, 1.086 patients admitted to intensive care with COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation (cases), and 10.860 population-based controls matched for age, sex and district of residency were included from mandatory national registries. ORs with 95% CIs for associations between severe COVID-19 and exposures with adjustment for confounders were estimated using logistic regression. The median age was 62 years (IQR 52–70), and 3003 (24.9%) were women. Type 2 diabetes (OR, 2.3 (95% CI 1.9 to 2.7)), hypertension (OR, 1.7 (95% CI 1.5 to 2.0)), obesity (OR, 3.1 (95% CI 2.4 to 4.0)) and chronic kidney disease (OR, 2.5 (95% CI 1.7 to 3.7)) were all associated with severe COVID-19. In the younger subgroup (below 57 years), ORs were significantly higher for all cardiometabolic risk factors. The risk associated with type 2 diabetes was higher in women (p=0.001) and in patients with a region of birth outside European Union(EU) (p=0.004).ConclusionDiabetes, obesity and hypertension were all independently associated with severe COVID-19 with stronger associations in the younger population. Type 2 diabetes implied a greater risk among women and in non-EU immigrants. These findings, originating from high-quality Swedish registries, may be important to direct preventive measures such as vaccination to susceptible patient groups.Trial registration numberClinicaltrial.gov (NCT04426084).

  • Body size and multiple myeloma mortality : a pooled analysis of 20 prospective studies
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Haematology. - : WILEY-BLACKWELL. - 0007-1048 .- 1365-2141. ; 166:5, s. 667-676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple myeloma (MM) is a rare but highly fatal malignancy. High body weight is associated with this cancer, but several questions remain regarding the aetiological relevance of timing and location of body weight. To address these questions, we conducted a pooled analysis of MM mortality using 1.5 million participants (including 1388 MM deaths) from 20 prospective cohorts in the National Cancer Institute Cohort Consortium. Proportional hazards regression was used to calculate pooled multivariate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Associations with elevated MM mortality were observed for higher early-adult body mass index (BMI; HR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.09-1.35 per 5 kg/m(2)) and for higher cohort-entry BMI (HR 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03-1.16 per 5 kg/m(2)) and waist circumference (HR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02-1.10 per 5 cm). In analyses of the joint effect of young adult and baseline BMI, women who were the heaviest, both in early adulthood (BMI 25+) and at cohort entry (BMI 30+) were at greater risk compared to those with BMI 18.5 = 25 at both time points (HR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.33-2.86) but there was no significant association in men. Waist-to-hip ratio and height were not associated with MM mortality. These observations suggest that overall, and possibly also central, obesity influence myeloma mortality, and women have the highest risk of death from this cancer if they remain heavy throughout adulthood.

  • High Thermoelectric Power Factor of Poly(3-hexylthiophene) through In-Plane Alignment and Doping with a Molybdenum Dithiolene Complex
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Macromolecules. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5835 .- 0024-9297. ; 53:15, s. 6314-6321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a record thermoelectric power factor of up to 160 μW m-1 K-2 for the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). This result is achieved through the combination of high-temperature rubbing of thin films together with the use of a large molybdenum dithiolene p-dopant with a high electron affinity. Comparison of the UV-vis-NIR spectra of the chemically doped samples to electrochemically oxidized material reveals an oxidation level of 10%, i.e., one polaron for every 10 repeat units. The high power factor arises due to an increase in the charge-carrier mobility and hence electrical conductivity along the rubbing direction. We conclude that P3HT, with its facile synthesis and outstanding processability, should not be ruled out as a potential thermoelectric material. ©

  • Nanostructured zinc sulphide phosphors
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Society Symposium - Proceedings. ; , s. 369-374
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zinc sulphide (ZnS) particles are efficient phosphors for application in flat-panel displays. Spherical ZnS particles were prepared by precipitation from a homogeneous solution. Nanoparticles of 20 to 40 nm having a very narrow size distribution could be synthesized by using complexing chelates such as acetate and acetylacetonate. Complexing of the precipitating cation with the anions present in the system lead to a limited concentration of free cations in the solution. This strongly influences the kinetics of the primary particle agglomeration/growth, resulting in nanometer-sized ZnS particles. Nanostructured ZnS synthesized in this way are polycrystalline particles composed of crystallites of 5-10 nm. The synthesis of very small, non-agglomerated, nanocrystalline particles in the 5-10 nm size range was also possible, making use of a strong complexing ligand (thioglycerol) during the synthesis. The synthesis of controlled monosized ZnS particles will be presented and discussed. The photoluminescence characteristics of ZnS make this material a suitable candidate as phosphor for application in low voltage display technology. The effect of Mn2+ doping on the luminescence characteristics of ZnS will also be discussed.

  • Fine structure in the alpha decay of Po-188,Po-192
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 68:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The alpha decay of Po-188,Po-192 has been reexamined in order to probe the 0(+) states in the daughter nuclei Pb-184,Pb-188 that can be associated with coexisting spherical, oblate, and/or prolate configurations. Improved values were measured for the excitation energy and the feeding alpha -decay intensity of the 0(2)(+) state in Pb-184,Pb-188 and conflicting results on the 0(3)(+) state in Pb-188 were clarified. All known cases of fine structure in the alpha decay of the even-even Po nuclei are reviewed. The reduced alpha-decay width systematics combined with potential-energy-surface calculations confirm the onset of deformation in the ground state of the polonium nuclei around the neutron midshell. An isomeric state with a half-life of 580(100)ns has been identified in Po-192 .
