  • Cold but comfortable? Application of comfort criteria to cold environments
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Indoor Air. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0905-6947 .- 1600-0668. ; 14:s7, s. 27-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fanger defined two physiological criteria that are basic requirements for people's perception of thermal neutrality and, eventually, thermal comfort. Mean skin temperature and evaporative heat loss are defined as functions of metabolic rate. The equations are derived from experiments in light clothing at or close to normal indoor climate. Relations between skin temperature and sweating on the one hand and thermal sensation and comfort on the other are well recognized; the precise description of the relationships vary and may differ from normal indoor environments to more extreme thermal stress. In moderately cold environments (around +10degreesC) ISO/DIS 7730 and ISO/DIS 11079 prescribe significantly different responses. Evaluation of the rationale behind the comfort criteria and the basic heat transfer equations in the two models reveals some clear differences. By modification of the sweating criteria and some of the heat transfer equations, predictions become much more similar. It is concluded that the basic comfort criteria may apply also to moderately cold and cold environments, but must consider the complex heat transfer through multilayer clothing in a more adequate way.

  • Design criteria for assessment of vehicle climate systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Human Factors in Design. - 9042302496 ; , s. 303-305
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The combined thermal effects of convection, radiation and conduction in a vehiclecompartment need special measuring equipment accounting for spatial and temporalvariations in the driver space. The most sophisticated equipment measures local heat fluxes at defined spots or areas of a man-shaped manikin. By calibration of segment heat fluxes with thermal sensation votes of panel of subjects, manikin data can be used as a design tool for evaluation of the quality of the thermal environment.

  • Evaluation of Cold Workplaces: An Overview of Standards for Assessment of Cold Stress
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial Health. - 1880-8026. ; 47:3, s. 228-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many persons world wide are exposed to cold environments, either indoors for example in cold stores, or outdoors. Cold is a hazard to health and may affect safety and performance of work. Basis for the creation of safe and optimal working conditions may be obtained by the application of relevant international standards. ISO 11079(1)) presents a method for evaluation of whole body heat balance. On the basis of climate and activity a required clothing insulation (IREQ) for heat balance is determined. For clothing with known insulation value an exposure time limited is calculated. ISO 11079 also includes criteria for assessment of local cooling. Finger temperatures should not be below 24 degrees C during prolonged exposures or 15 degrees C occasionally. Wind chill temperature indicates the risk of bare skin to freeze for combinations of wind and low temperatures. Special protection of airways is recommended at temperatures below -20 degrees C, in particular during heavy work. Additional standards are available describing evaluation strategies, work place observation checklists and checklist for medical screening. Risks associated with contact with cold surfaces can be evaluated with ISO 13732(2)). The strategy and principles for assessment and prevention of cold stress are reviewed in this paper.
