  • Circulating markers of cellular immune activation in prediagnostic blood sample and lung cancer risk in the Lung Cancer Cohort Consortium (LC3)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 146:9, s. 2394-2405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cell-mediated immune suppression may play an important role in lung carcinogenesis. We investigated the associations for circulating levels of tryptophan, kynurenine, kynurenine:tryptophan ratio (KTR), quinolinic acid (QA) and neopterin as markers of immune regulation and inflammation with lung cancer risk in 5,364 smoking-matched case-control pairs from 20 prospective cohorts included in the international Lung Cancer Cohort Consortium. All biomarkers were quantified by mass spectrometry-based methods in serum/plasma samples collected on average 6 years before lung cancer diagnosis. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for lung cancer associated with individual biomarkers were calculated using conditional logistic regression with adjustment for circulating cotinine. Compared to the lowest quintile, the highest quintiles of kynurenine, KTR, QA and neopterin were associated with a 20-30% higher risk, and tryptophan with a 15% lower risk of lung cancer (all p(trend) < 0.05). The strongest associations were seen for current smokers, where the adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of lung cancer for the highest quintile of KTR, QA and neopterin were 1.42 (1.15-1.75), 1.42 (1.14-1.76) and 1.45 (1.13-1.86), respectively. A stronger association was also seen for KTR and QA with risk of lung squamous cell carcinoma followed by adenocarcinoma, and for lung cancer diagnosed within the first 2 years after blood draw. This study demonstrated that components of the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway with immunomodulatory effects are associated with risk of lung cancer overall, especially for current smokers. Further research is needed to evaluate the role of these biomarkers in lung carcinogenesis and progression.

  • Interim effects of salt substitution on urinary electrolytes and blood pressure in the China Salt Substitute and Stroke Study (SSaSS).
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: American Heart Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-8703 .- 1097-6744. ; 221, s. 136-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Salt Substitute and Stroke Study is an ongoing 5-year large-scale cluster randomized trial investigating the effects of potassium-enriched salt substitute compared to usual salt on the risk of stroke. The study involves 600 villages and 20,996 individuals in rural China. Intermediate risk markers were measured in a random subsample of villages every 12 months over 3 years to track progress against key assumptions underlying study design. Measures of 24-hour urinary sodium, 24-hour urinary potassium, blood pressure and participants' use of salt substitute were recorded, with differences between intervention and control groups estimated using generalized linear mixed models. The primary outcome of annual event rate in the two groups combined was determined by dividing confirmed fatal and non-fatal strokes by total follow-up time in the first 2 years. The mean differences (95% CI) were -0.32 g (-0.68 to 0.05) for 24-hour urinary sodium, +0.77 g (+0.60 to +0.93) for 24-hour urinary potassium, -2.65 mmHg (-4.32 to -0.97) for systolic blood pressure and +0.30 mmHg (-0.72 to +1.32) for diastolic blood pressure. Use of salt substitute was reported by 97.5% in the intervention group versus 4.2% in the control group (P<.0001). The overall estimated annual event rate for fatal and non-fatal stroke was 3.2%. The systolic blood pressure difference and the annual stroke rate were both in line with the statistical assumptions underlying study design. The trial should be well placed to address the primary hypothesis at completion of follow-up.

  • Improved reliability of electrically conductive adhesives joints on Cu-Plated PCB substrate enhanced by graphene protection barrier
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IMAPS Nordic Conference on Microelectronics Packaging, NordPac 2017, Goteborg, Sweden, 18-20 June 2017. - 9781538630556 ; , s. 143-146
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Graphene protection barrier was introduced to the interface between the ECAs and Cu-plated wire to enhance the reliability of the ECAs joints on Cu-Plated PCB substrate due to its excellent properties of impermeability to all gases/salts as well as its thermal/chemical stability. The results of shear test indicated graphene protection barrier can improve the shear strength of the ECAs joints on Cu-plated PCB substrate by almost 22% after 500 hours high temperature and high humidity cyclic test. Characterizations by optical microscope and XPS were further performed to explain the mechanism. To sum up, it can be believed that the graphene protection barrier can dramatically enhance the reliability of the ECAs joints on Cu-Plated PCB substrate.

  • Infrared Emissivity Measurement for Vertically Aligned Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) Based Heat Spreader Applied in High Power Electronics Packaging
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 6th Electronic System-integration Technology Conference (ESTC 2016). - 9781509014026 ; , s. Article no 7764696-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vertically-aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes were deposited on silicon substrate by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), which can be utilized as heat spreaders in high power electronic packaging due to their remarkable thermal conductivity. The infrared emissivity of the vertically aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes was then characterized based on the FLIR SC600 infrared imaging system. The average infrared emissivity of the multiwall carbon nanotubes sample was about 0.92, which agrees well with experimental results reported before. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the multiwall carbon nanotubes were further analyzed to explain its high emissivity, and the reason can be attributed to the homogeneous sparseness and aligned structure of the vertically aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes

  • The Effects of Graphene-Based Films as Heat Spreaders for Thermal Management in Electronic Packaging
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 17th International Conference on Electronic Packaging Technology, ICEPT 2016. - 9781509013968 ; , s. Art no 7583272; Pages 889-892
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Graphene-based films (GBF) were fabricated using a chemical conversion process including graphene oxide (GO) preparation by use of Hummer’s method, graphene oxide reduction using L-ascorbic acid (LAA), and finally film formation by vacuum filtration. GBF is considered as a candidate material for thermal management, i.e. for removing heat from hotspots in power electronic packaging, due to its high thermal conductivity. In this work, the GBF heat spreading performance in 3D TSV packaging was analysed using finite element methods (FEM) implemented in the COMSOL software. Both size effects and the influence of the thermal conductivity of the GBF heat spreader on the thermal performance of the 3D TSV package were evaluated. Furthermore, the size effects of the thermal conductive adhesive (TCA) underfill between the chip and the printed circuit board (PCB) were analysed. The results obtained are critical for proper design of graphene-based lateral heat spreaders in high power electronic packaging.

  • Thermo-elastic behavior of hexagonal Sc-Ti-Zr-Hf high-entropy alloys
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 55:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent advances in tuning the long-standing strength-ductility tradeoff have drawn attention to high-entropy alloys (HEAs), and the appearance of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structures has been emphasized. However, few studies have explored the elastic moduli of hcp HEAs, which is of prime importance for improved understanding of the outstanding mechanical properties. In this work, we focus on a set of equiatomic rare-earth-free HEAs with hcp structures, i.e. ScTiZr, ScTiHf, ScZrHf, TiZrHf, and ScTiZrHf, and their thermo-elastic properties are studied using quantum mechanical first-principles methods. It is found that, for all considered HEAs, the hexagonal axial ratio shows a weak dependence on the temperature effect, and the thermal expansion coefficient remains almost unchanged above room temperature. From the calculated temperature-dependent single-crystal elastic constants, we analyzed the mechanical stability, elastic anisotropy, and derived polycrystalline moduli. Results indicate that the present HEAs exhibit rather high elastic isotropy and large elastic softening resistance. The ab initio predicted Young's modulus, shear modulus, and specific modulus do not obey the rule of mixture, which indicates that there exists a strong intrinsic hardening effect in all of the considered HEAs. The calculated results are in good agreement with the available experimental measurements.

  • Hotspot test structures for evaluating carbon nanotube microfin coolers and graphene-like heat spreaders
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 29th IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Test Structures (ICMTS), Yokohama, Japan, Mar 28-31, 2016. - 1071-9032. ; , s. 32-36
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design, fabrication, and use of a hotspot-producing and temperature-sensing test structure for evaluating the thermal properties of carbon nanotubes, graphene and boron nitride for cooling of electronic devices in applications like 3D integrated chip-stacks, power amplifiers and light-emitting diodes is described. The test structure is a simple meander-shaped metal resistor serving both as the hotspot and the temperature thermo-meter. By use of this test structure, the influence of emerging materials like those mentioned above on the temperature of the hotspot has been evaluated with good accuracy).

  • Directional dominance on stature and cognition in diverse human populations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 523:7561, s. 459-462
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Homozygosity has long been associated with rare, often devastating, Mendelian disorders, and Darwin was one of the first to recognize that inbreeding reduces evolutionary fitness. However, the effect of the more distant parental relatedness that is common in modern human populations is less well understood. Genomic data now allow us to investigate the effects of homozygosity on traits of public health importance by observing contiguous homozygous segments (runs of homozygosity), which are inferred to be homozygous along their complete length. Given the low levels of genome-wide homozygosity prevalent in most human populations, information is required on very large numbers of people to provide sufficient power. Here we use runs of homozygosity to study 16 health-related quantitative traits in 354,224 individuals from 102 cohorts, and find statistically significant associations between summed runs of homozygosity and four complex traits: height, forced expiratory lung volume in one second, general cognitive ability and educational attainment (P < 1 × 10(-300), 2.1 × 10(-6), 2.5 × 10(-10) and 1.8 × 10(-10), respectively). In each case, increased homozygosity was associated with decreased trait value, equivalent to the offspring of first cousins being 1.2 cm shorter and having 10 months' less education. Similar effect sizes were found across four continental groups and populations with different degrees of genome-wide homozygosity, providing evidence that homozygosity, rather than confounding, directly contributes to phenotypic variance. Contrary to earlier reports in substantially smaller samples, no evidence was seen of an influence of genome-wide homozygosity on blood pressure and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, or ten other cardio-metabolic traits. Since directional dominance is predicted for traits under directional evolutionary selection, this study provides evidence that increased stature and cognitive function have been positively selected in human evolution, whereas many important risk factors for late-onset complex diseases may not have been.

  • Linking atmospheric pollution to cryospheric change in the Third Pole region : current progress and future prospects
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: National Science Review. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2095-5138 .- 2053-714X. ; 6:4, s. 796-809
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings are known as the Third Pole (TP). This region is noted for its high rates of glacier melt and the associated hydrological shifts that affect water supplies in Asia. Atmospheric pollutants contribute to climatic and cryospheric changes through their effects on solar radiation and the albedos of snow and ice surfaces; moreover, the behavior and fates within the cryosphere and environmental impacts of environmental pollutants are topics of increasing concern. In this review, we introduce a coordinated monitoring and research framework and network to link atmospheric pollution and cryospheric changes (APCC) within the TP region. We then provide an up-to-date summary of progress and achievements related to the APCC research framework, including aspects of atmospheric pollution's composition and concentration, spatial and temporal variations, trans-boundary transport pathways and mechanisms, and effects on the warming of atmosphere and changing in Indian monsoon, as well as melting of glacier and snow cover. We highlight that exogenous air pollutants can enter into the TP's environments and cause great impacts on regional climatic and environmental changes. At last, we propose future research priorities and map out an extended program at the global scale. The ongoing monitoring activities and research facilitate comprehensive studies of atmosphere-cryosphere interactions, represent one of China's key research expeditions to the TP and the polar regions and contribute to the global perspective of earth system science.
