- Som en del i utvärderingen av hur väl visioner och målsättningar för Västra Götaland uppnås, har den här rapporten fokuserat på en rad frågor som tillsammans speglar de vanor och attityder som finns hos invånarna i regionen. Med utgångspunkt i 2016 års västsvenska SOM-undersökning har medborgarnas demokratisyn, förtroende för politiker, utvärdering av Västra Götalandsregionens prestationer samt åsikter om infrastruktur och sjukvård kartlagts på detaljerad nivå. Vidare har invånarnas arbetsliv, livsstil och självskattade hälsa analyserats. Resultaten visar på många likheter i regionen men också på stora olikheter, varav många är direkt kopplade till socioekonomiska faktorer, utbildning och ålder. I detta avslutande kapitel sammanfattas och relateras rapportens resultat till Vision Västra Götaland – det goda livet.

Media and Basic Desires : An Approach to Measuring the Mediatization of Daily Life

- The extended indispensability of media can be seen as a key indicator of mediatization, whereby our lives become adapted to media. But even though we can assume that the pervasive character of digital media essentially changes everyday life and the way people experience it, we cannot take consequences of technological transformation for granted. Following from this we argue there is a need for quantitative analyses that can verify mediatization processes in time and space. Here we present a tool that measures the extent to which media reach into the deeper layers of daily human life, used in an empirical study conducted in Sweden in 2017. The results show that perceived media indispensability is played out along three dimensions of daily human life; (1) (re)production; (2) recognition, and (3) civic life, and appears as a socially structured and structuring process, although not in a very strong way. We argue this tool, in diachronic analyses, works as a measurement of mediatization.

Like a wave : Understanding the film and TV industries in Korea and Sweden

- This doctoral dissertation is concerned with the complex dynamics of knowledge in the South Korean film and TV industry and Swedish filmmaking from a spatiotemporal perspective. The film and TV industries are highly dependent on knowledge and innovation. Production in the film and TV industries usually takes place in the form of projects in which creative professionals form teams for a limited time period to complete creative tasks. Moreover, the film and TV industries are facing rapid and constant changes to work practices, technology, markets and demand. Therefore, the dynamics of knowledge and interactive learning can be an important source of competitive advantages and project success in the film and TV industries. The aim of this thesis is to enhance understanding of knowledge creation and diffusion processes, relationships with institutional settings and the systematic character of business in the film and TV industries. The focus of this thesis is on the production value chain in which many independent production firms are active. It is argued that 1) the film and TV industries and their institutional environments co-evolve; and 2) project-specific knowledge sourcing takes places through local-extra local linkages.The case of the Korean film and TV industry indicates that its evolution strongly depends on the setting of the respective institutions and regulations, and on the institutional environments. In addition, it is argued that diverse actors, factors and sectors are involved in the emergence and development of the Korean film and TV industry. The Swedish filmmaking case study examines production processes and ecologies and argues that production managers are the key players in them, and their roles – investigator, bridge builder and gatekeeper – in knowledge creation and diffusion processes are central to this part of the production of film and TV. Exploring two case studies with a focus on the key (f)actors of knowledge creation and diffusion processes has resulted in the view that knowledge-based competencies can be an important source of competitive advantage and project success in high-velocity environments.

Mobilitet och tillgänglighet – framtidens resande

- Trafikverket har gett TRUM (Transportforskningsenheten vid Umeå Universitet) i uppdrag att utreda framtidens mobilitet innefattande frågor såsom privatpersoners attityder och normer till resande med bil och däribland självkörande bilar, betalningsvilja, syn på ägande inställning till individuellt resande gentemot kollektivt resande, samt intressenters förväntningar på ett framtida tillgängligt transportsystem. Därutöver önskar Trafikverket ökad förståelse kring arbetssätt och metoder för att möta teknikutveckling och framtida mobilitet. Syftet med föreliggande rapport är att svara på dessa frågeställningar utifrån litteraturstudier och intervjuer.Det huvudsakliga underlaget för rapporten är en genomgång av litteratur relaterad till transporter, mobilitet och historiska såväl som framtida trender. Fokus har varit på persontransporter kopplat till människors beteende, samt vad privatpersoner, framtidsspanare och företrädare för bil- och teknikbranschen tror kommer att hända med personresande i framtiden. Utöver litteraturstudien genomfördes sex intervjuer under januari och februari 2016. Intervjuerna gjordes med syfte att öka förståelsen för hur människor resonerar kring mobilitet och transporter i dagsläget och hur de tror att vi kommer att resa i framtiden. Utifrån litteraturgenomgången och intervjuerna kan konstateras att attityder till elbilar generellt sett är positiva. Hinder för ett bredare genombrott utgörs av uppfattade prisskillnader, räckviddsångest och uppfattad brist på laddinfrastruktur. Som drivkrafter kan nämnas ökat miljömedvetande och alltmer positiva attityder bland flera olika aktörer, till exempel teknikutvecklare. När det gäller självkörande bilar är attityderna mer varierande. Bland annat lyfts säkerhetsfaktorer, tillgänglighet och det faktum att flera bilmodeller redan idag utrustas med olika typer av autonomifunktioner. Enligt olika bedömningar kommer koncept såsom Mobility as a Service och liknande att leda till förändrade attityder och normer när det gäller både privat och kollektivt resande. Avslutningsvis lämnas förslag på hur dessa och andra förändringar kan följas och förstås utifrån ett planeringsperspektiv. Olika metoder och perspektiv är viktiga för att skapa en bild över framtida utveckling redan idag, framförallt kopplat till de miljöutmaningar samhället står inför.

Deficiency of liver-derived insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) does not interfere with the skin wound healing rate

- Objective: IGF-I is a growth factor, which is expressed in virtually all tissues. The circulating IGF-I is however derived mainly from the liver. IGF-I promotes wound healing and its levels are decreased in wounds with low regenerative potential such as diabetic wounds. However, the contribution of circulating IGF-I to wound healing is unknown. Here we investigated the role of systemic IGF-I on wound healing rate in mice with deficiency of liver-derived IGF-I (LI-IGF-I-/- mice) during normal (normoglycemic) and impaired wound healing (diabetes). Methods: LI-IGF-I-/- mice with complete inactivation of the IGF-I gene in the hepatocytes were generated using the Cre/loxP recombination system. This resulted in a 75% reduction of circulating IGF-I. Diabetes was induced with streptozocin in both LI-IGF-I-/- and control mice. Wounds were made on the dorsum of the mice, and the wound healing rate and histology were evaluated. Serum IGF-I and GH were measured by RIA and ELISA respectively. The expression of IGF-I, IGF-II and the IGF-I receptor in the skin were evaluated by qRT-PCR. The local IGF-I protein expression in different cell types of the wounds during wound healing process was analyzed using immunohistochemistry. Results: The wound healing rate was similar in LI-IGF-I-/- mice to that in controls. Diabetes significantly delayed the wound healing rate in both LI-IGF-I-/- and control mice. However, no significant difference was observed between diabetic animals with normal or reduced hepatic IGF-I production. The gene expression of IGF-I, IGF-II and IGF-I receptor in skin was not different between any group of animals tested. Local IGF-I levels in the wounds were similar between of LI-IGF-I-/- and WT mice although a transient reduction of IGF-I expression in leukocytes in the wounds of LI-IGF-I-/- was observed seven days post wounding. Conclusion: Deficiency in the liver-derived IGF-I does not affect wound healing in mice, neither in normo-glycemic conditions nor in diabetes.

Made in Canada : The strategies, spaces and working lives of independent designers in the Canadian fashion system

- Drawing on 87 interviews with independent fashion designers and key informants, this thesis is a collection of papers which aim to explore the strategies, spatial dynamics and working lives of independent fashion designers in the Canadian fashion industry. The majority of fashion design firms in Canada are small independent businesses, typically run by an individual or pair of designers, with few employees. Independent fashion designers create unique small businesses, produce high quality garments defined by the label ‘made in Canada,’ strategically mobilize physical and virtual spaces within the national system, and yet, the long-term viability of these businesses is far from certain. The Canadian fashion industry is facing a number of systemic challenges relating to wider institutional and policy weaknesses that make it difficult to grow a long-term domestic or international fashion business. However, the findings also suggest that a key strength of the Canadian fashion system is that it offers a variety of spaces for designers of different sizes, scales, and motivations. Throughout this thesis lies the tension between the quest for independence and creative freedom, which often comes at the cost of highly precarious entrepreneurial and labouring conditions. This thesis contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of ‘second tier’ fashion cities and regional systems, the entrepreneurial motivations and working lives of independent fashion designers, the locational choice decisions and the mobility of patterns of creative workers in the digital age, and the evolving nature of intermediation and value creation within the fashion industry.
