  • Comparison of brain activity during different types of proprioceptive inputs : a positron emission tomography study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 143:3, s. 276-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been shown that the primary and secondary somatosensory cortex, as well as the supplementary motor area (SMA), are involved in central processing of proprioceptive signals during passive and active arm movements. However, it is not clear whether different cortical areas are involved in processing of different proprioceptive inputs (skin, joint, muscle receptors), what their relative contributions might be, where kinesthetic sensations are formed within the CNS, and how they interact when the full peripheral proprioceptive machinery acts. In this study we investigated the representation of the brain structures involved in the perception of passive limb movement and illusory movement generated by muscle tendon vibration. Changes in cortical activity as indicated by changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were measured using positron emission tomography (PET). Twelve subjects were studied under four conditions: (1) passive flexion-extension movement (PM) of the left forearm; (2) induced illusions of movements (VI) similar to the real PM, induced by alternating vibration of biceps and triceps tendons (70-80 Hz) at the elbow; (3) alternating vibration of biceps and triceps tendons (with 20-50 Hz) without induced kinesthetic illusions (VN); and (4) rest condition (RE). The results show different patterns of cortex activation. In general, the activation during passive movement was higher in comparison with both kinds of vibration, and activation during vibrations with induced illusions of movement was more prominent than during vibrations without induced illusions. When the PM condition was contrasted with the other conditions we found the following areas of activation -- the primary motor (MI) and somatosensory area (SI), the SMA and the supplementary somatosensory area (SSA). In conditions where passive movements and illusory movements were contrasted with rest, some temporal areas, namely primary and associative auditory cortex, were activated, as well as secondary somatosensory cortex (SII). Our data show that different proprioceptive inputs, which induce sensation of movement, are associated with differently located activation patterns in the SI/MI and SMA areas of the cortex. In general, the comparison of activation intensities under different functional conditions indicates the involvement of SII in stimulus perception generation and of the SI/MI and SMA areas in the processing of proprioceptive input. Activation of the primary and secondary auditory cortex might reflect the interaction between somatosensory and auditory systems in movement sense generation. SSA might also be involved in movement sense generation and/or maintenance.

  • Ferromagnetism above room temperature in bulk and transparent thin films of Mn-doped ZnO
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nature Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-1122 .- 1476-4660. ; 2:10, s. 673-677
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The search for ferromagnetism above room temperature in dilute magnetic semiconductors has been intense in recent years. We report the first observations of ferromagnetism above room temperature for dilute (<4 at.%) Mn-doped ZnO. The Mn is found to carry an average magnetic moment of 0.16 μ(B) per ion. Our ab initio calculations find a valance state of Mn2+ and that the magnetic moments are ordered ferromagnetically, consistent with the experimental findings. We have obtained room-temperature ferromagnetic ordering in bulk pellets, in transparent films 2-3 μm thick, and in the powder form of the same material. The unique feature of our sample preparation was the low-temperature processing. When standard high-temperature (T>700degreesC) methods were used, samples were found to exhibit clustering and were not ferromagnetic at room temperature. This capability to fabricate ferromagnetic Mn-doped ZnO semiconductors promises new spintronic devices as well as magneto-optic components.

  • Protection against cold air and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction while on regular treatment with Oxis
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-3064 .- 0954-6111. ; 95:6, s. 484-490
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to compare the duration of protection against exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) after inhalation of formoterol (Oxis) Turbuhaler with that of terbutaline Turbuhaler and placebo Turbuhaler in asthmatic patients treated regularly with formoterol Turbuhaler 9 microg b.i.d. and inhaled steroids. The study. performed at three centres (Goteborg and Lund, Sweden, and Trondheim, Norway), consisted of an open-label part with formoterol Turbuhaler 9 microg b.i.d. and a randomized, double-blind, cross-over part with a single dose (on top of the regular treatment) of either formoterol Turbuhaler 9 microg, terbutaline Turbuhaler 0.5 mg or placebo Turbuhaler. The patients attended the clinic six times: twice for screening visits, three times for randomized treatment and once for a follow-up visit. Patients received regular b.i.d. treatment with formoterol 9 microg for a mean period of 16 days. Formoterol gave a post-exercise fall of 12, 10, 15 and 17% in forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) 15 min, 4, 8 and 12 h after inhalation. The differences compared with placebo (falls of 26, 22, 23 and 22%) and terbutaline (falls of 17, 18, 22 and 22%) were all statistically significant (P<0.05 for all comparisons). Patients on regular treatment with formoterol Turbuhaler 9 microg b.i.d. have a significant protection against EIB up to 12 h after inhalation of formoterol 9 microg. The protection was also significantly better than that of terbutaline Turbuhaler 0.5 mg.

  • A ToF-SIMS study of linseed oil bonded to mercapto silane treated aluminium
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 231-2, s. 362-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ToF-SIMS has been used to analyse an aluminium surface treated with a vegetable oil using a mercapto silane as a coupling agent between the aluminium substrate and the vegetable oil. The coupling between the vegetable oil and the mercapto silane was obtained through a photoinduced thiol-ene reaction using UV-radiation. The ToF-SIMS results show that the desired thiolene reaction has taken place between the unsaturated parts of the vegetable oil and the thiol groups of the mercapto silane via the thiol-ene reaction forming a surface film.

  • Recent advances in ion-assisted growth of Cr/Sc multilayer X-ray mirrors for the water window
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Vacuum. - 0042-207X .- 1879-2715. ; 68:3, s. 275-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cr/Sc multilayer X-ray mirrors intended for normal incidence reflection in the water window wavelength range, lambda=[2.4-4.4 nm], have been grown by ion-assisted sputter deposition and characterized using soft and hard X-ray reflectivity. By extracting low-energy ions, with energies, E-ion, ranging from 9 to 113 eV and with ion-to-metal flux ratios, Phi, between 0.76 and 23.1, from the sputtering plasma to the growing film, the nano-structure of the multilayer interfaces could be modified. A significantly increased soft X-ray reflectivity, using lambda = 3.374 nm, for Cr/Sc multilayers with layer thicknesses in the range 0.4-2.8 nm, was obtained when high ion-to-metal flux ratios, Phi(Cr) = 7.1 and Phi(Sc) = 23.1, and low energy ions, E-ion = 9eV, were used. An experimental reflectivity of 5.5% was obtained at 76degrees for a multilayer with 400 bi-layers. Simulations of the reflectivity data showed that the interface widths are < 0.425 nm. It could be concluded that roughness of low spatial frequency is reduced at lower ion energies than the high spatial frequency which was eliminated at the expense of intermixing at the interfaces at higher ion energies. The predicted performance of normal incidence multilayer mirrors grown at optimum conditions and designed for lambda = 3.374 and 3.115 nm indicates possible reflectivities of 6.5% and 14%, respectively.
