- We characterize the stability and achievable performance of networked estimation under correlated packet losses described by the Gilbert-Elliot model. For scalar continuous-time linear systems, we derive closed-form expressions for the mean-square distortion of the optimal estimator. The conditions for stable mean square estimation error are equivalent to those obtained previously for stability of 'peak distortions' [3]. We study how the estimator performance depends on loss probability and loss burst length, and show that the mean-square distortion remains bounded if the average burst length does not exceeda calculated bound. The main new finding is that, once we fix the mean length of loss bursts, the average packet loss rate influences the estimator's performance but not its stability.

- During 1995-2004, 209 children/adolescents were diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic or myeloid leukemia (ALL, AML) in Southern Sweden, of which 177 (85%), comprising 128 B-lineage ALL, 34 AML, and 15 T-cell ALL, could be analyzed for internal tandem duplications (ITD) and activating point mutations in the second tyrosine kinase domain (ATKD) of FLT3. Seventeen (10%) FLT3 mutations (6 ITD, 11 ATKD, mutually exclusive) were detected. None of the T-cell ALL harbored any mutations. ITD and ATKD were found in 2% and 6% of the B-lineage ALL and in 12% and 9% of the AML, being particularly common in high hyperdiploid ALL (14%), ALL (20%), and AML (23%) with 11q23/MLL rearrangements, and in AML with a normal karyotype (60%). All ATKD-positive AML with MLL rearrangements harbored the t(9,11)(p21,q23). Global gene expression data were available for 76 of the B-lineage ALL and 19 of the AML, of which 6 (8%) and 3 (16%) had FLT3 mutations, respectively. No distinct expression pattern associated with FLT3 mutations was identified. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

- PURPOSE: To establish the diagnostic accuracy of MRI including MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) compared with helical CT in the differentiation of malignant and benign lesions in the periampullary region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients (27 M, 24 F, mean age 66 years, range 39-86 years) with obstructive jaundice and sonographic evidence of intra- and extrahepatic bile duct dilatation (n=31) or suspicion of periampullary tumor, based on previously performed ultrasound and/or CT examination (n=20), were studied. MRI with MRCP and helical CT were reviewed blindly under standardized conditions. Lesion status (differentiation of malignant versus benign) was rated on a 5-point diagnostic confidence scale. Reference standards for comparison were findings at surgery or laparoscopy and/ or the clinical outcome. The predictive value of imaging findings was determined with multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve were 0.96 for MRI with MRCP and 0.81 for CT (P <0.05). Multivariate analysis of eight imaging variables at MRI indicated that a stricture with malignant characteristics at MRCP was the best predictor of malignancy. CONCLUSION: MRI with MRCP was significantly more accurate than CT in differentiating between malignant and benign lesions in patients with suspected periampullary tumors, mainly due to the information obtained on the MRCP images of the biliary and pancreatic duct anatomy.

Biomimetic synthesis of suberin for new biomaterials

- Suberin is the biopolymer giving cork (oak bark) its hydrophobic and resistant characteristics. It acts as a diffusion barrier in bark and roots of plants. Similarly to lignin, it is a phenolic polymer with good affinity to cellulose and other wood polysaccharides, but it also contains polyaliphatic and strongly hydrophobic elements. In order to produce a lignin derivative similar to suberin, a desired lignin starting material should be of low molecular weight and have a high content of hydroxylic phenolic groups. By means of cross flow nanofiltration of softwood kraft pulping black liquor and pH-precipitation with diluted sulphuric acid, such a lignin has been obtained. Due to the fact that too much organics entering the recovery boiler frequently is the bottleneck for pulp production increases, a removal of part of the lignin can be economically very favourable. By using this lignin together with linola oil, a linseed oil with a large amount of unsaturated structures, an attempt was made to create a new hydrophobic lignin derivative similar tosuberin. The product was analysed with FT-IR, Fourier Transformed Infra Red Spectroscopy and GPC, Gel Permeation Chromatography. The suberin like material obtained from this lignin could be polymerised on thermo mechanical pulp fibres by means of Mn(III)-driven phenolic coupling. The ability of the suberin monomers to act as a hydrophobic paper coating was evaluated with contact angle measurements and the results indicate that this lignin derivative was potentially of interest due to its capability to interact well with wood fibres and make paper hydrophobic.

- Lignin residues are available in large amounts as kraft lignin from chemical pulping processes. This lignin is mainly incinerated in recovery boilers. The recovery boilers are often the bottle-necks in the overall pulping process when pulp production increases are desired. Through cross-flow nano-filtration of the black liquor from kraft pulping, a low-molecular weight lignin fraction can be removed thus decreasing the organic load on the recovery boilers. The low-molecular weight lignin fraction furthermore exhibit different characteristics compared to other commercial kraft lignins and represents a new raw material source in novel applications. The low-molecular weight lignin was used together with a vegetable oil to produce a new hydrophobic lignin derivative similar to suberin. The lignin and the lignin derivative was analysed with FT-IR, UV-vis and SEC. The ability of the product to make paper surfaces hydrophobic was also evaluated. The results demonstrate the possibility to make a suberin-like lignin derivative that is potentially of interest in paper-coating applications due to its capability to interact well with wood fibres and make paper hydrophobic.
