  • Wordlength Optimization of a Pipelined FFT Processor
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: 42nd Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 1999.. - 0780354915 ; 1, s. 501-503
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the optimization of the word lengths in an 8 k-points pipelined FFT processor. The word lengths can be freely chosen since the FFT is implemented as a full custom ASIC. According to the specification, input and output word lengths are 12 bits but improved performance on be achieved by using a longer wordlength internally. Increased wordlength means increased size, both for memory and arithmetic operations. Since the FFT processor uses large memories, especially in the early stages, it is especially important to keep wordlength short in the beginning of the pipeline. Finding a good trade-off between precision and size is a difficult problem and it is not reasonable to solve analytically. Simulations using a C-model are therefore used to find an acceptable solution. The simulations show that a good solution is obtained by starting with 12 bits and gradually increasing the wordlength up to 16 bits. The final result is rounded back to 12 bits. This is a good trade-off between precision and complexity

  • Welfare state attitudes in context : local contexts and attitude formation in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Welfare state attitudes are often studied from the perspective of the individual's characteristics and/or national or regime-type contexts. This thesis instead seeks explanations for individuals' varying attitudes towards the welfare state at the level of local contexts (municipalities). Sweden is used as a case for testing whether there are such contextual effects. The general aim is to find out whether social, political, and institutional aspects of local context influence the attitudes of individuals. Since the general aim of this thesis is to examine how background characteristics of individuals and characteristics of local contexts simultaneously act in shaping individuals' attitudes, I use multilevel modelling in order to handle individual-level and contextual-level data simultaneously. Latent-class analysis (LCA) is also employed in the analyses to explore the patterning of variables. This is mainly done in order to create dependent variables and to distinguish between categories of municipalities sharing similar characteristics.  The data consist of Swedish survey data, which have been complemented by municipal-level data. The findings indicate that the social and political context of municipalities can matter for individuals' attitude formation. Variation across municipalities in terms of the prevalence of social problems and risks seems to influence how individuals view the welfare state. Local municipal contexts characterized by many social problems and risks tend to be associated with more welfare state friendly attitudes among the local inhabitants, after taking individual-level determinants into account. Support for high social spending is greater in such milieus as is the tendency to view welfare beneficiaries with less suspicion regarding the potential abuse of welfare policies. Regarding the influence of local public service provision on attitudes, no evidence was found for feedback effects on individuals' attitudes toward public service privatization. In their attitudes towards the welfare state, individuals are to some extent influenced by their local environment. There seems to be a 'built in' thermostat in the Swedish welfare state. Local circumstances characterized by social problems and risks tend to be associated with a local citizenry having more welfare state-friendly attitudes.

  • Feasibility study of a system for combined light dosimetry and interstitial photodynamic treatment of massive tumors
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - 2155-3165. ; 41:7, s. 1462-1468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A system for the photodynamic laser treatment of massive tumors that employs multiple optical fibers to be inserted into the tumor mass is described. The light flux through the tumor can be assessed by use of the individual fibers both as transmitters and as receivers. With a computer model that describes the diffusive light propagation, optical dosimetry is under development, The system has been tested in an experimental animal tumor model in preparation for clinical work. Currently, delta-aminolevulinic acid is used as a sensitizer, activated by 635-nm radiation from a 2.0-W compact diode laser system. With the availability of future, highly selective drugs absorbing approximately 750 nm, larger tumor volumes should be treatable, and surrounding, sensitive normal tissue should be spared.

  • Mixed methods study on the feasibility of implementing periodic continuous glucose monitoring among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a primary care setting
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Heliyon. - 2405-8440. ; 10:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Health care professionals (HCPs) play a central role in leveraging technologies to support individuals with diabetes. This mixed-method study was completed to determine the feasibility of implementing periodic continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in a primary care setting.AIM: This study aimed to evaluate and describe the experiences of using periodic CGM with data visualization tools in patients with type 2 diabetes to foster a person-centered approach in a primary care setting.METHODS: Fifty outpatients aged ≥18 years, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and with a disease duration of at least 2 years were included in this study. Data were collected from April 2021 to January 2022. Patients completed a single period of sensor measurements for 28 days and a diabetes questionnaire about feelings and experiences of health care. HbA1c was also measured. A focus group interview was conducted to evaluate and describe the HCPs experiences of using periodic CGM.RESULTS: Patients reported to HCPs that the CGM device was comfortable to wear and noted that LibreView was easy to use when scanning the sensor to obtain and visualize the glucose levels and trends. Data availability of CGM data was >70 %.Clinical observations revealed a mean reduction in HbA1c, mmol/mol from 60.06 [7.65 %] at baseline to 55.42 [7.20 %] after 4 weeks (p < 0.001). Two categories were identified: 1) Fostering dialogue on self-care and 2) Promoting understanding.CONCLUSIONS: The HCPs and participants in this study had a positive experience or viewed the implementation of periodic CGM with data visualization tools as a positive experience and appeared to be feasible for implementation in a primary care setting.

  • Transparent TiO2 and ZnO Thin Films on Glass for UV Protection of PV Modules
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Materials. - Lausanne, Switzerland : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-8016. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Failure of PV modules frequently occurs as a result of degradation of their encapsulation material by destructive UV radiation. Both the life expectancy and efficiency of PV modules can be improved by reducing the transmittance of the destructive UV radiation through the cover glass without compromising the transmittance in the visible wavelength region. In addition, if the absorbed UV photons can be down-shifted to wavelengths that can be more efficiently converted to electrical energy, an additional increase of the PV efficiency could be achieved. In this study we have investigated transparent ZnO and TiO2 thin films deposited by spray pyrolysis on soda lime silicate float glass as functional layers on PV cover glass. The optical bandgap, UV-cutoff, UV-Vis transmittance, reflectivity (total and diffuse) and photoluminescence have been determined. The ZnO coating shifted the optical bandgap to longer wavelengths, resulting in a reduction of the transmittance of destructive UV radiation by up to ∼85%. Distinct photoluminescence peaks at 377 nm and at 640 nm were observed for one of the ZnO samples. The TiO2 coated glasses also showed an increased UV cutoff, which resulted in a reduction of transmittance of destructive UV radiation by up to 75%. However, no photoluminescence peaks could be observed from the TiO2 films with 325 nm excitation laser, which can be explained by the fact that only indirect interband transitions are accessible at this excitation wavelength. Deposition of both ZnO and TiO2 coatings resulted in a reduction of the transmitted light convertible by PV modules, by up to 12.3 and 21.8%, respectively. The implication of the results is discussed in terms of lifetime expectancy and efficiency of PV modules.

  • Pestivirus Infections in Semi-Domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus): A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Serological Study in Finnmark County, Norway
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Viruses. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4915. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Members of the Pestivirus genus (family Flaviviridae) cause severe and economically important diseases in livestock. Serological studies have revealed the presence of pestiviruses in different cervid species, including wild and semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer. In this retrospective study, serum samples collected between 2006 and 2008 from 3339 semi-domesticated Eurasian reindeer from Finnmark County, Norway, were tested for anti-pestivirus antibodies using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a subset of these by virus neutralization test (VNT). A seroprevalence of 12.5% was found, varying from 0% to 45% among different herding districts, and 20% in western Finnmark, as compared to 1.7% in eastern Finnmark. Seroprevalence increased with age. Pestivirus-specific RNA was not detected in any of the 225 serum samples tested by real-time RT-PCR. Based on VNT results, using a panel of one bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) strain and two border disease virus (BDV) strains, the virus is most likely a reindeer-specific pestivirus closely related to BDV. A characterization of the causative virus and its pathogenic impact on reindeer populations, as well as its potential to infect other domestic and wild ruminants, should be further investigated.
