  • Potassium sulfate droplets and the origin of turbidity in alabaster glass
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Glass Technology : European Journal of Glass Science and Technology A. ; 47:1, s. 15-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study of the criteria required to manufacture multi-component semi-transparent silicate glasses, so called “alabaster” glass, has found that the optical effect is caused by non-crystal¬line potassium sulfate droplets. The droplets were characterized by use of XRD, SEM/EDX and Raman spectroscopy. The size range of the particles is in the order of 5-50 micrometers. It was found that the droplets consisted of potassium sulfate, even if other sulfate compounds were added to the glass. The amount of sulfate compound added, the melting temperature of the furnace and the melting time have significant effect on the optical density of the glass. The optical density of the glass can be correlated to the calculated surface tension of the host glass, suggesting that phase separation of a sulfate enriched liquid phase is part of the mecha¬nism forming the droplets. By adding pigments several different colours can be obtained, but the alabaster effect is not achieved during reducing conditions, thus it seems not possible to produce colours originating from reduced pigments. Pigments tested were Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Au, Mo/Se, Nd and Ti/Ce/Se.

  • Selenium : molybdenum-based coloration of alkali silicate glasses
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Glass Technology. - : Society of Glass Technology. - 0017-1050. ; 48:5, s. 213-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction between selenium and molybdenum in reduced alkali silicate melts, resulting in red glasses has been studied. The oxidation state of Mo is Mo(VI) as evidenced by XANES and ESCA results. Selenium is present in a reduced state, as indicated by ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and XANES. The colour is described by ultraviolet/visible spectra and CIE colour coordinates. The main absorption peaks are at 450 and 540 nm. Similar bands are reported for MoOSe32−. Several commonly used glass components must be avoided in the batch, as they prevent formation of the red colour.

  • Enhanced insulin absorption in the rabbit airways and lung by sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aerosol Medicine. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 0894-2684 .- 1557-9026. ; 15:1, s. 27-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this investigation was to study regional absorption of inhaled insulin together with an enhancer (sodium di-octyl-sulfosuccinate [DOSS]) in the rabbit airways and lung. Insulin was administered with or without DOSS by aerosol inhalation, intratracheal infusion, intranasally, sublingually, and without DOSS intravenously. Blood glucose and plasma levels of insulin were measured during 100 min from the start of administration. Inhalation of insulin (3 U) with 0.25% or 1% DOSS decreased average blood glucose levels significantly more than inhalation of insulin (3 U) without DOSS. Intratracheal administration of 1.5 U of insulin with 0.25% DOSS in 0.3 mL of vehicle decreased the average blood glucose level significantly compared with intratracheal administration of 1.5 U of insulin and no DOSS in 0.3 mL of vehicle and compared with 1.5 U of insulin with 0.25% DOSS in 0.15 mL of vehicle. Intravenous insulin (1.5 U) and inhaled (1.5 U) insulin in 0.25% DOSS decreased average blood glucose levels significantly compared with intratracheal (0.15 mL), intranasal, and sublingual administration of 1.5 U of insulin with 0.25% DOSS. The bioavailability of inhaled insulin (1.5 U) with 0.25% DOSS was estimated to be 16% in comparison with 7% for intratracheally (0.15 mL), 1% intranasally, and 0.8% sublingually administered insulin (1.5 U with 0.25% DOSS), respectively. Inhaled insulin together with the absorption enhancer DOSS decreased the blood glucose level more effectively than insulin given intratracheally, intranasally, or sublingually. The effect on blood glucose reflected the difference in plasma insulin concentration for the different routes of administration.

  • Workload of Swedish Special Forces Operators Experienced During Stressful Simulation Training: A Pilot Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Special Operations Medicine. - : Breakaway Media, LLC. - 1553-9768. ; 22:3, s. 42-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Stress week was included during training of Special Forces (SF) Operators in Sweden to test their ability and limits for handling stress in different unknown situations and environments at a military training facility in Sweden. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of stress and workload experienced in various tasks during firefighting and military medicine simulation training. Methods: This pilot study was performed during the second day of stress week. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) is a validated, subjective, and multidimensional assessment tool for rating perceived workload with six subscales: mental demand, physical demand, temporal demand, performance, effort, and frustration. These subscales were used as an indicator of stress experienced. The different tasks were assessed by the SF Operators by rating the NASA-TLX subscales for each task, which were then analyzed and compared using ANOVA.Results: There was a significant difference between the two simulation exercises assessed by the participants and instructors, and both groups considered firefighting to be more demanding than medical. The participants perceived the mental and physical demands as more demanding in the firefighting exercises, as well as for the level of frustration and effort. However, no differences regarding performance or temporal demands between the simulation exercises were found. Conclusion: The principle "train as you fight" implies difficult and demanding situations. When exposing Swedish SF Operators to challenging situations, assessment of perceived stress and performance are possible.

  • Transparent TiO2 and ZnO Thin Films on Glass for UV Protection of PV Modules
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Materials. - Lausanne, Switzerland : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-8016. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Failure of PV modules frequently occurs as a result of degradation of their encapsulation material by destructive UV radiation. Both the life expectancy and efficiency of PV modules can be improved by reducing the transmittance of the destructive UV radiation through the cover glass without compromising the transmittance in the visible wavelength region. In addition, if the absorbed UV photons can be down-shifted to wavelengths that can be more efficiently converted to electrical energy, an additional increase of the PV efficiency could be achieved. In this study we have investigated transparent ZnO and TiO2 thin films deposited by spray pyrolysis on soda lime silicate float glass as functional layers on PV cover glass. The optical bandgap, UV-cutoff, UV-Vis transmittance, reflectivity (total and diffuse) and photoluminescence have been determined. The ZnO coating shifted the optical bandgap to longer wavelengths, resulting in a reduction of the transmittance of destructive UV radiation by up to ∼85%. Distinct photoluminescence peaks at 377 nm and at 640 nm were observed for one of the ZnO samples. The TiO2 coated glasses also showed an increased UV cutoff, which resulted in a reduction of transmittance of destructive UV radiation by up to 75%. However, no photoluminescence peaks could be observed from the TiO2 films with 325 nm excitation laser, which can be explained by the fact that only indirect interband transitions are accessible at this excitation wavelength. Deposition of both ZnO and TiO2 coatings resulted in a reduction of the transmitted light convertible by PV modules, by up to 12.3 and 21.8%, respectively. The implication of the results is discussed in terms of lifetime expectancy and efficiency of PV modules.

  • Distinct translatome changes in specific neural populations precede electroencephalographic changes in prion-infected mice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PLoS Pathogens. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7366 .- 1553-7374. ; 18:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Selective vulnerability is an enigmatic feature of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), whereby a widely expressed protein causes lesions in specific cell types and brain regions. Using the RiboTag method in mice, translational responses of five neural subtypes to acquired prion disease (PrD) were measured. Pre-onset and disease onset timepoints were chosen based on longitudinal electroencephalography (EEG) that revealed a gradual increase in theta power between 10- and 18-weeks after prion injection, resembling a clinical feature of human PrD. At disease onset, marked by significantly increased theta power and histopathological lesions, mice had pronounced translatome changes in all five cell types despite appearing normal. Remarkably, at a pre-onset stage, prior to EEG and neuropathological changes, we found that 1) translatomes of astrocytes indicated reduced synthesis of ribosomal and mitochondrial components, 2) glutamatergic neurons showed increased expression of cytoskeletal genes, and 3) GABAergic neurons revealed reduced expression of circadian rhythm genes. These data demonstrate that early translatome responses to neurodegeneration emerge prior to conventional markers of disease and are cell type-specific. Therapeutic strategies may need to target multiple pathways in specific populations of cells, early in disease.
