  • Monitoring and assessment of heavy metal contamination in surface water of selected rivers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Geocarto International. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1010-6049 .- 1752-0762. ; 38:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current research aimed to monitor and assess the heavy metal contamination in the surface water of 53 sampling sites along the selected rivers using principal component analysis and cluster analysis. For this purpose, both physiochemical parameters such as the temperature (T), the potential of hydrogen (pH), total dissolved solids (TDS) and electroconductivity (EC), and heavy metals such as iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) are analyzed as potential water contaminants. The average values of pH, TDS, EC and T are found at 7.75, 70.89 mg/L, 139.11 µs/cm and 20.29 °C, respectively, and heavy metals including Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, As and Fe are observed at 0.04, 0.04, 0.04, 0.03, 0.001 and 0.04 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, it is found that in both rivers hazardous metals, including Cr (100%), Cd (92.30%), Pb (100%), Ni (100%) and Fe (91%), exceed the permissible limits of the WHO.

  • Effect of ammonium hydroxide-based ionic liquids' freezing point and hydrogen bonding on suppression temperature of different gas hydrates
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - : Elsevier BV. - 0045-6535 .- 1879-1298. ; 307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study presents the effect of freezing point depression and hydrogen bonding energy interaction on four ammonium hydroxide-based ionic liquids (AHILs) of gas hydrate systems. The AHILs investigated are tetramethylammonium hydroxide, tetraethylammonium hydroxide, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide, and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide. The considered hydrate system includes methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and three binary mixed gas hydrates (70-30 CO2 + CH4, 50-50 CO2 + CH4, 30–70 CO2 + CH4), which are often encountered in the flow assurance pipelines. The experimental temperature range is between 274.0 and 285.0 K, corresponding to pipeline pressures for different gas systems. The thermodynamic influence, i.e., average suppression temperature (ΔŦ) of the studied system, was reported for different mass concentrations (1, 5, and 10 wt%) and correlated with the freezing point depression and hydrogen bonding energy interaction of AHILs. The study also covers the structural impact of AHILs (in the form of alkyl chain variation) on the thermodynamic hydrate inhibition (THI) behaviour via freezing point and hydrogen bonding energy interactions. Findings revealed that the increased alkyl chain length of AHILs reduced the ΔŦ due to a decrease in hydrogen bonding ability. The highest THI inhibition (ΔŦ = 2.27 K) is attained from the lower alkyl chain AHIL, i.e., TMAOH (10 wt%) for the CO2 hydrate system. The freezing point depression of AHILs is a concentration-dependent phenomenon. Increased concentration of the AHILs in the system yielded lower freezing point temperature, positively influencing hydrate mitigation. Although the study provided the initial insight between the freezing point tendency and hydrogen bonding energies of AHILs on thermodynamic inhibition (ΔŦ). Based on the freezing point depression and hydrogen bonding energy interaction, a more generalized correlation should be developed to predict any potential ionic liquids regarded as promising hydrate inhibitors.

  • Low serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor is associated with suicidal ideation in major depressive disorder
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1781. ; 273, s. 108-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The “neurotrophic hypothesis of depression” posits that low levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Low levels of BDNF have also been found in individuals with suicide attempts, in MDD or other disorders, suggesting that low BDNF may also be associated with suicidality. We assessed serum BDNF in 68 physically healthy and unmedicated (for at least 6 weeks) MDD subjects, who expressed no suicidal ideation (NSI; N = 40) or endorsed suicidal ideation (SI; N = 28), but were not actively suicidal, and in healthy controls (HC; N = 76). Serum BDNF levels were significantly lower in MDD with SI compared to NSI MDD but were not significantly correlated with total Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) severity or severity on any HDRS subscale. Covarying for age, sex, body mass index, platelets, perceived stress, smoking and physical activity did not alter the significant association between BDNF and SI. SI status was not significantly different between HC and MDD. Our findings show an association between low serum BDNF and SI in individuals with less than severe and non-active suicidal intent, suggesting that the individual symptom of suicidality may extend the neurotrophic hypothesis of depression to include suicidal ideation within MDD.

  • Sources and quality of literature addressing femoroacetabular impingement: a scoping review 2011-2015.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Current reviews in musculoskeletal medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1935-973X .- 1935-9748. ; 9:4, s. 396-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic review was performed to explore the current trends over the last 5years in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) literature and compare the quality and sources of publications in the literature to that published previously. We identified 1066 relevant studies including 186,572 patients. The number of publications increased during the reviewed time period with the most dramatic increase from 2011 to 2013. Seventy-three percent (N=786) of all studies were of levels 4 and 5 quality evidence. The percent of publications which were levels 1, 2 and 3 increased by almost twofold from 16.1% (N=26) to 28.7% (N=51) between 2011 and 2015. In comparison to previous work, there has been 3.5-fold increase in the number of publications over the past 5years with a shift towards improving the level of evidence available guiding the arthroscopic management of FAI.IV-Systematic Review.

  • Genomic, Proteomic, Morphological, and Phylogenetic Analyses of vB_EcoP_SU10, a Podoviridae Phage with C3 Morphology
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 9:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recently isolated phage, vB_EcoP_SU10 (SU10), with the unusual elongated C3 morphotype, can infect a wide range of Escherichia coli strains. We have sequenced the genome of this phage and characterized it further by mass spectrometry based proteomics, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and ultra-thin section electron microscopy. The genome size is 77,327 base pairs and its genes, and genome architecture, show high similarity to the phiEco32 phage genes and genome. The TEM images reveal that SU10 have a quite long tail for being a Podoviridae phage, and that the tail also changes conformation upon infection. The ultra-thin section electron microscopy images of phages at the stage of replication within the host cell show that the phages form a honeycomb-like structure under packaging of genomes and assembly of mature capsids. This implies a tight link between the replication and cutting of the concatemeric genome, genome packaging, and capsid assembly. We have also performed a phylogenetic analysis of the structural genes common between Podoviridae phages of the C1 and C3 morphotypes. The result shows that the structural genes have coevolved, and that they form two distinct groups linked to their morphotypes. The structural genes of C1 and C3 phages appear to have diverged around 280 million years ago applying a molecular clock calibrated according to the presumed split between the Escherichia - Salmonella genera.
