  • Electric bike (non)users’ health and comfort concerns pre and peri a world pandemic (COVID-19): A qualitative study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport & Health. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-1405. ; 21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic affects different domains of society, including the transport system. Due to the impacts of social distancing, research concerningelectric bike (e-bike) applications and non(user) health and comfort concerns is needed. Thisresearch aims to understand the health and comfort concerns of e-bike (non)users in both pre (PR)and peri (PE) pandemic situations and explore how the PE situation triggers (non)users to use e-bikes.Methods: An interpretive description qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviewswas used to gather the empirical material for this research. Results: Twenty-three (non)user participants were interviewed in the PR situation, and 12 of theseparticipants were interviewed again in the PE situation. The comfort provided by the e-bike didnot outweigh its cost as a factor for nonusers considering investing in the e-bikes in the PR situation. However, nonusers acknowledged that e-bikes can serve as substitutes for public transportby eliminating social interactions and consequently potential health concerns, in addition toproviding comfortable mobility. E-bike users were in agreement concerning physical activity andthe health benefits of using e-bikes in the PR situation. Their opinions differed slightly, as womenplaced less emphasis on the physical activity provided by e-bike use. However, gender opinionsconverged regarding health concerns about using public transport in PE situations. Infrastructurefacilities and e-bike performance are evident as users’ comfort concerns in the PE situation. Conclusion: The results highlight the role of the e-bike in PE situations as a reliable transport modeand suggest that there is considerable potential for e-bikes as substitutes for public transport inthe post-pandemic situation. The findings are applicable to e-bike level-of-service studies in orderto provide an overview of the user’s experience of comfort.

  • Aktiva och hälsosamma transporter
  • 2021

  • Car free urban districts – Interactions between measures, implementation and experience
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cities and car traffic does not always fit well together. Apart from the well-knownenvironmental problems associated with traffic congestion (e.g. air pollution and noise, climate change and global warming), there are also negative local effects in the form ofincreased risk of traffic accidents, abuse of key resources (energy and time), gender issues interms of accessibility, security and power over public space and mobility patterns, financiallosses and lost space due to increasing car traffic and the need for available parking spaces(e.g. Sheller & Urry, 2000; Berger et al., 2014; Halling et al., 2016). These problems cansignificantly reduce the cities' attractiveness for residents and temporary visitors.Furthermore, an increase in car traffic has proved to be negative for place related functionssuch as meeting places, or just places to visit or stay at, and for public health because of thereduced opportunities to perform physical and social activities such as walking and cycling(Lee, & Buncher, 2008). In order to effectively manage the present traffic overload, publicadministrations and transport authorities must have a comprehensive understanding of thelocal context, including the mobility needs of travelers and residents. One of the startingpoints for this three-year research project on planning and implementation of car-free districtshas been to perform an interdisciplinary literature review, in which literature that triangulatescar-free urban planning measures, concrete neighborhood interventions and quality of lifeparameters is scrutinized. The intention has been to find out the state of art regarding theinteraction between measures, actual implementation and users’ experience of car freedistricts. The results so far suggests that there is a lack of research addressing the interactionof the three variables, suggesting the need for more empirical studies that accounts for all these different levels of environmental interactions from macro to micro (i.e. policy to finalusers of place).

  • Changes, Problems, and Challenges in Swedish Spatial Planning—An Analysis of Power Dynamics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past few decades, the Swedish spatial planning system has experienced numerous problems and challenges. In particular, there have been changes in legislation and an increased neoliberalisation of planning that gives private actors a larger influence over the planning processes in Sweden. In this article, we analyse these changes through the lenses of collaborative and neoliberal planning in order to illuminate the shifting power relations within spatial planning in Sweden. We analyse the changes of power relations from three dimensions of power based on interviews with different kinds of planners throughout Sweden. We show that power relations in the Swedish spatial planning system have shifted and that neoliberalisation and an increased focus on collaborative planning approaches have made spatial planning more complex in recent decades. This has led to a change of role for planners form actual planners to collaborators. We conclude that market-oriented planning (neoliberal planning) and collaborative planning have made it more difficult for spatial planners in Sweden to work towards sustainable urban futures.

  • Contested values in bike-sharing mobilities – A case study from Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport Geography. - : Elsevier BV. - 0966-6923. ; 92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to analyse the type of mobilities and subjects that are being promoted and constituted through bike-sharing systems. This is done through an analysis of the bike-sharing system in the city of Lund in Sweden. The analysis utilises Bacchi's What is the Problem Represented to be? framework and develops it through adding a spatial perspective. Departing from a critical velomobilities perspective, we argue that urban transport policies cannot merely be regarded as one specific and delimited reaction to well-defined policy problems. Instead, the ways that BSSs are, described, motivated – but also spatially organised – constitute which mobilities are produced. The analysis is based in an analysis of relevant policy documents, maps and observations. It is concluded that bike sharing is not seen as cycling and is rarely linked to cycling as such, but rather is seen as part of the public transport system. Further, it is concluded that the motivation behind the location of the stations is to facilitate the flow of workers to public transport, and promote attractiveness and tourism, thus constituting a strong belief in a win-win situation between sustainability and growth. Here prioritisation between different values, and the possible tensions between different social and environmental dimensions of sustainability is down-played.
