  • Pleiotropic Analysis of Cancer Risk Loci on Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Risk.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. - 1055-9965 .- 1538-7755. ; 24:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Several cancer-associated loci identified from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been associated with risks of multiple cancer sites, suggesting pleiotropic effects. We investigated whether GWAS-identified risk variants for other common cancers are associated with risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) or its precursor, Barrett's esophagus.METHODS: We examined the associations between risks of EA and Barrett's esophagus and 387 SNPs that have been associated with risks of other cancers, by using genotype imputation data on 2,163 control participants and 3,885 (1,501 EA and 2,384 Barrett's esophagus) case patients from the Barrett's and Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Genetic Susceptibility Study, and investigated effect modification by smoking history, body mass index (BMI), and reflux/heartburn.RESULTS: After correcting for multiple testing, none of the tested 387 SNPs were statistically significantly associated with risk of EA or Barrett's esophagus. No evidence of effect modification by smoking, BMI, or reflux/heartburn was observed.CONCLUSIONS: Genetic risk variants for common cancers identified from GWAS appear not to be associated with risks of EA or Barrett's esophagus.IMPACT: To our knowledge, this is the first investigation of pleiotropic genetic associations with risks of EA and Barrett's esophagus. • Application of ultra-fast timing techniques to the study of exotic and weakly produced nuclei
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 31:10, s. S1421-S1426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultra-fast time-delayed techniques have been recently applied in a number of studies where exotic nuclei were identified using advanced selection techniques. These include large Compton-suppressed Ge arrays, in-flight separators or recoil separators. Some of the new results are discussed in this presentation. Besides the results for Mg-32 and Pd-96, they include the first determination of the half-life of the 8(+) state in Ge-80, T-1/2 = 2.95(6) ns, and significantly more precise results for Mn-51 (3680 keV level) and V-48 (421 keV level), T-1/2 = 1760(40) ps and T-1/2.

  • Phase angle as a prognostic marker after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in a prospective cohort study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5521 .- 1502-7708. ; 51:8, s. 1013-1016
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The phase angle identifies changes in tissue's electrical properties assessed by bioelectrical impedance measurement and it can predict prognosis in some conditions. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is commonly used in patients with severe nutritional problems, but there is a need to improve the clinical decision-making for using PEG. We examined if a decreased phase angle predicts complications, short-term mortality (within 60 days of PEG insertion), or inflammatory markers (high C-reactive protein [CRP] levels or low albumin levels) following PEG insertion.Material and methods: The phase angle was assessed from body resistance and reactance as measured by bioelectrical impedance in 131 patients admitted for PEG. Anthropometrics and clinical biochemical measures were collected at the time of PEG insertion, while complications and mortality were assessed at clinical follow-ups. Multivariable logistic regression analysis provided odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for sex, age, body mass index, and comorbidity. Results: A decreased phase angle did not statistically significantly increase the probability of acute complications or short-term mortality, but predicted increased inflammatory markers (CRP10mg/L [OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.02-2.60], albumin<30g/L [OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.24-3.57] and a combination of CRP10mg/L and albumin<30g/L [OR 3.06, 95% CI 1.51-6.19]).Conclusions: A decreased phase angle did not predict acute complications or short-term mortality after PEG insertion, but predicted increased levels of inflammatory markers.

  • Search for hyperdeformation in light Xe nuclei
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254 .- 1509-5770. ; 36:4, s. 1033-1038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ultimate search for hyperdeformation (HD) at high spins with the EUROBALL spectrometer was performed for Ba-126 as a hyper long (HLHD) experiment. The DIAMANT ancillary detector was used to tag gamma-rays in coincidence with the emitted light charged particles. Using gamma-energy correlation methods, the particle-xn-gamma data have been analysed to search for hyperdeformed structures in the corresponding residual nuclei. Data in coincidence with one alpha particle indicate the presence of normal deformed collective bands up to very high spins and the possible occurrence of HD-like ridge structures in Xe-122.

  • Plasticity in hydraulic architecture of Scots pine across Eurasia
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Oecologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1939 .- 0029-8549. ; 153:2, s. 245-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Widespread tree species must show physiological and structural plasticity to deal with contrasting water balance conditions. To investigate these plasticity mechanisms, a meta-analysis of Pinus sylvestris L. sap flow and its response to environmental variables was conducted using datasets from across its whole geographical range. For each site, a Jarvis-type, multiplicative model was used to fit the relationship between sap flow and photosynthetically active radiation, vapour pressure deficit (D) and soil moisture deficit (SMD); and a logarithmic function was used to characterize the response of stomatal conductance (G(s)) to D. The fitted parameters of those models were regressed against climatic variables to study the acclimation of Scots pine to dry/warm conditions. The absolute value of sap flow and its sensitivity to D and SMD increased with the average summer evaporative demand. However, relative sensitivity of G(s) to D (m/G(s,ref) where m is the slope and G(s,ref) is reference G(s) at D = 1 kPa) did not increase with evaporative demand across populations, and transpiration per unit leaf area at a given D increased accordingly in drier/warmer climates. This physiological plasticity was linked to the previously reported climate- and size-related structural acclimation of leaf to sapwood area ratios. G(s,ref), and its absolute sensitivity to D (m), tended to decrease with age/height of the trees as previously reported for other pine species. It is unclear why Scots pines have higher transpiration rates at drier/warmer sites, at the expense of lower water-use efficiency. In any case, our results suggest that these structural adjustments may not be enough to prevent lower xylem tensions at the driest sites.

  • Maximally Aligned States in the Proton Drip Line Nucleus 106Sb
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 753:3-4, s. 251-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Sb-106 have been investigated in the Fe-54(Ni-58, 1α 1p1n) reaction by in-beam γ-spectroscopic methods using the EUROBALL detector array equipped with charged particle and neutron detectors. On the basis of measured γγ-coincidence relations, angular distributions, and linear polarization ratios a significantly extended level scheme has been constructed up to spin and parity I-π = (19(-)) and E-x &SIM; 6.5 MeV. The experimental results are interpreted within the framework of the gdsh shell model using a realistic effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. Candidates for states with fully aligned angular momenta in the π(d(5/2), g(7/2))(1) v (d(5/2), g(7/2))(5) valence space are identified at 4338 and 5203 keV, as well as in the π(d(5/2), g(7/2))(1) V(d(5/2), g(7/2))(4)h(11/2)(1) space at 6087, 6573 and 6783 keV.

  • Triaxial strongly deformed bands in Tm-160,Tm-161
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 78:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Tm-160,Tm-161 were populated using the Te-128(Cl-37, 5n and 4n) reactions at a beam energy of 170 MeV. Emitted gamma rays were detected in the Gammasphere spectrometer. Two rotational bands with high moments of inertia were discovered, one assigned to Tm-160, while the other tentatively assigned to Tm-161. These sequences display features similar to bands observed in neighboring Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu nuclei which have been discussed in terms of triaxial strongly deformed structures. Cranked Nilsson Strutinsky calculations have been performed that predict well-deformed triaxial shapes at high spin in Tm-160,Tm-161.
