  • A novel dual-structure, self-healable, polysaccharide based hybrid nanogel for biomedical uses
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Soft Matter. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1744-6848 .- 1744-683X. ; 7:12, s. 5816-5825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new unique dual-structure hydrogel composed of nanostructures of amphiphilic chitosan (CHC) dispersed in a sodium alginate matrix (SAL) is presented. The successful creation of the composite is based on combining chitosan and sodium alginate without precipitation or agglomeration, which has not been previously reported. The CHC/SAL composite gels present a number of properties making them attractive for biomedical applications, in particular as implantable depot gels or in dermal applications. The gels are shown to form rapidly upon exposure of the combination solution to Ca2+ containing gelation medium. The formed gels have storage moduli similar to soft tissue and display shear reversible gelation with fast recovery of mechanical properties, in addition to self-healing capability at certain compositions. The gels exhibit moderate swelling in deionized water and low swelling in simulated body fluid and cell culture media. The drug release from the composite gels is demonstrated using the hydrophobic drug all-trans retinoic acid, which is used in cancer and skin disorder therapies. The drug release initially occurs through a Fickian mechanism for a fraction of the loaded drug, where the fraction released during this process depends on release media and gel composition. A large fraction of the loaded drug can be retained for long term depot drug delivery. Furthermore, the CHC/SAL gels are determined to have low toxicity and skin irritation.

  • Environmental impact of ferrochrome slag in road construction
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Waste Management. - 0956-053X .- 1879-2456. ; 21:3, s. 255-264

    • Vargon Alloys in Western Sweden is one of the largest producers of ferrochrome slag in Europe. Ferrochrome slag is a by-product from the production of ferrochrome, an essential component in stainless steel. Extensive tests have been carried out on the physical properties of the ferrochrome slag from Vargon Alloys and it was found to be highly suitable as road construction material. The composition and leaching tests of the ferrochrome slag show that the chromium content is high, 1-3%, although leaching under normal conditions is very low. With the exception of potassium (K), which had a potential leaching capacity (availability test) of around 16%, the leaching of chromium, nickel, zinc and other elements was just a few per cent. However, all these tests were conducted in the laboratory. What happens out in the field, under the influence of acid rain and biological activity, and how does this compare with the laboratory results? To answer this question an investigation was carried out to study the environmental impact of ferrochrome slag in roads that were built in 1994. The investigation includes soil sampling (total content and leachable amounts of metals) and groundwater analysis (filtered and non-filtered samples). In addition, a new method involving the bio-uptake of chromium and other metals by the roots of the dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) was tested. The results show that there was a low migration of particles from the slag to the underlying soil and that the leaching into the groundwater was also low for all the elements analysed. However, there seemed to be a significant uptake of Cr by plants growing with their roots in the slag. An investigation of plant uptake was an important complement to laboratory leaching tests on alternative materials. • Subjects with COPD and productive cough have an increased risk for exacerbations and death
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 109:1, s. 88-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Chronic bronchitis is related to worse general health status, exacerbations and mortality among subjects with COPD. Also less longstanding cough and phlegm may be related to worse prognosis in COPD but this has rarely been evaluated in population-based studies. Aim: To evaluate the relationship between productive cough, exacerbations and mortality among subjects with and without COPD. Method: All subjects with COPD (n = 993) were identified together with sex-and age matched reference subjects without obstructive lung function impairment from four population-based cohorts in 2002-04. Baseline spirometry and structured interview including data on exacerbations last 12 months were used in this study (n = 1986) together with mortality data collected until February 2012. Results: Productive cough was more common in COPD than non-COPD (42.8 vs. 23.5%, p < 0.001), more common in men than women, but associated to exacerbations in both sexes. COPD-subjects with productive cough had the highest risk for exacerbations in both sexes and they had a significantly increased risk for death (HR 1.48, 95% CI 1.13-1.94) also when adjusted for sex, age, BMI, smoking habits and heart disease. Conclusion: Productive cough was common and increased the risk for exacerbations in both sexes, in both COPD and non-COPD. COPD-subjects with productive cough had the highest risk for exacerbations and a significantly higher risk for death also after adjustment for common risk factors. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. • Serum lipids and mood in working men and women in Sweden
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. - : BMJ. - 0143-005X .- 1470-2738. ; 48, s. 360-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • STUDY OBJECTIVE--To explore the link between serum cholesterol and suicide by investigating the relation between serum lipids and depressive symptoms. DESIGN--This was a cross sectional study of the relation between serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides on the one hand and depressive symptoms as expressed in a questionnaire on the other. SETTING--An organisational development programme in industry with assistance from occupational health care. PARTICIPANTS--A total of 644 male and 261 female employees (mainly white-collar workers) participated. MAIN RESULTS--Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol values were lower in those men who, sometimes, often, or very often, had experienced low mood or glumness during the past month compared with those who had not. Serum triglyceride concentrations did not differ between the groups. In women, however, the serum triglyceride value, but not the total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol, was lower in those who reported low mood, depression, or anxiety during the past six months. CONCLUSIONS--Decreasing appetite as a consequence of depression in men would probably lead to both decreasing cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations. Thus, these data indicate the presence of some other explanation for the relation between the level of LDL cholesterol and depressive symptoms in men.

  • Cost Control and Revenue Generation : The Case of Public Housing Companies Experiences in Sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Regional studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0034-3404 .- 1360-0591. ; 38:7, s. 803-815
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increased competition for funds associated with the provision of public-sector housing, stock privatization, and attempts to introduce more tenant-centred and effective housing management services are trends seen in social housing throughout the European Union. Consequently, studies have been done that compare programmes worldwide and in Europe, or analyse changes in single countries. The Swedish system has received attention because of its long-term viability. An ordinary least-squares analysis of financial information from providers in this system has been made with special regard to revenue generation capabilities, the ability to remain profitable, and the retention of asset values for both level and first difference approaches. If one general lesson can be drawn from the empirical results, it would be that expenditures on consolidated maintenance are associated not only with short- term rental revenues, but also undoubtedly with long-term viability. Further, first difference results suggested that negotiated rents produced operating profits that kept pace with revenues over that period of the study. The results should be especially relevant to the interests of a wide range of local governments where public housing is of concern. In particular, those individuals bearing greater responsibility for running self-sufficient systems and also policy-makers interested in running efficient, effective systems should be interested in these observations.
