  • Long-term Pleistocene aridification and possible linkage to high-latitude forcing : New evidence from grain size and magnetic susceptibility from loess-paleosol record in northeastern China
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Catena (Cremlingen. Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0341-8162 .- 1872-6887. ; 154, s. 21-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Loess deposits are regarded as good indicators of the inception and development of arid and semi-arid climate in central Asia and northern China during the late Cenozoic. In northeastern China extensive loess deposits are found surrounding the Horqin and Otindag sand fields, and they have great potential for reconstructing the long-term aridification history of the region. However, these loess deposits are currently poorly understood. Here, we present a high-resolution magnetic susceptibility (MS) and grain-size record spanning the last 1.0 Ma from a 36.6-m-thick loess-paleosol sequence at Niuyangzigou site (NYZG) in NE China. The grain-size record reveals a long-term drying trend in NE China since ca. 1.0 Ma, punctuated by two significant abrupt drying events at similar to 0.65 Ma and similar to 0.3 Ma. These results demonstrate a process of stepwise intensification of drying in NE China over the past 1 Ma, and lend support to the hypothesis that global ice volume/temperature changes were the major driver of the long-term aridification of Asian dust source areas. However, unlike the widely studied loess deposits on the central Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), the MS record in paleosol units Sl, S2 and S4 from the NYZG site do not show evidence of enhanced monsoon precipitation resulting from decreased global ice volume and the prolonged episodes of interglaciation after the Mid-Pleistocene Transition evident in the ice volume record. We hypothesize that this may be due to differences in the climatic sensitivity of the MS of Chinese loess deposits on a regional scale, rather than to in regional differences in monsoon intensity.

  • Gubenyiliu II Inhibits Breast Tumor Growth and Metastasis Associated with Decreased Heparanase Expression and Phosphorylation of ERK and AKT Pathways
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Molecules. - : MDPI AG. - 1431-5157 .- 1420-3049. ; 22:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gubenyiliu II (GYII), a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula used in our hospital, has shown beneficial effects in cancer patients. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of GYII on murine breast cancer models. GYII showed significant inhibitory effects on tumor growth and metastasis in the murine breast cancer model. Additionally, GYII suppressed the proliferation of 4T1 and MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. A better inhibitory effect on 4T1 cell proliferation and migration was found in the decomposed recipes (DR) of GYII. Moreover, heparanase expression and the degree of angiogenesis were reduced in tumor tissues. Western blot analysis showed decreased expression of heparanase and growth factors in the cells treated with GYII and its decomposed recipes (DR2 and DR3), and thereby a reduction in the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and serine-threonine kinase (AKT). These results suggest that GYII exerts anti-tumor growth and anti-metastatic effects in the murine breast cancer model. The anti-tumor activity of GYII and its decomposed recipes is, at least partly, associated with decreased heparanase and growth factor expression, which subsequently suppressed the activation of the ERK and AKT pathways.

  • Intramyocardial Dissecting Hematoma after Acute Myocardial Infarction : Echocardiographic Features and Clinical Outcome
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Echocardiography. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0742-2822 .- 1540-8175. ; 33:7, s. 962-969
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Intramyocardial dissecting hematoma (IDH) after acute myocardial infarction (MI) is a rare form of subacute cardiac rupture and hence management uncertainties. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical course of a small series of IDH patients and to review the available evidence for managing similar cases. Methods: Eight IDH patients from our center had echocardiographic, coronary angiographic and clinical outcome data reviewed. PubMed was also searched for IDH following MI. Cases were divided into three groups and compared according to the dissection location. Results: In our 8 patients, 3 had septal, 1 right ventricular (RV), and 4 left ventricular (LV) dissection. Five were medically treated and 3 surgically repaired. Reviewing the literature revealed 68 IDH patients, of mean age 66 +/- 10 years, 43 males. The percentage of IDH involving the LV free wall, septal, and RV free wall were 47%, 26.5%, and 26.5%, respectively. In the cohort as a whole, mortality was not different between surgically and medically treated patients (33.3% vs. 54.3%, P = 0.08), neither based on the IDH location (P = 0.49). While surgical and medical treatment of the LV free wall (20.0% vs. 40.9%, P = 0.25) and septal (46.2% vs. 60.0%, P = 0.60) were not different, surgical repair of RV free wall had significantly better survival (30.0% vs. 87.5%, P = 0.015). The LVEF (P = 0.82), mitral regurgitation (P = 0.49) failed to predict mortality. Conclusion: While survival following medical and surgical treatment of LV IDH is not different, patients with RV free wall dissection benefit significantly from surgical repair.

  • Visualisation on supersonic flow over backward-facing step with or without roughness
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Turbulence. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-5248. ; 16:7, s. 633-649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At Mach number 3.4, visualisation experiments of flowover backward-facing step (BFS) with or without roughness band attached on upstream wall are carried out via traditional schlieren and newly developed nano-tracer-based planar laser scattering (NPLS). The time-averaged flow characteristic of the reattachment region and the instantaneous rich structures of the redeveloping boundary layer in the steamwise-normal plane are both revealed. Additionally, top views in the different planes (y/h = 0.67, 1.00, 1.33, 1.67, 2.00) are imaged with a resolution of 0.064 mm/pixel. By contrasting the NPLS images at different times, the unsteady evolution characteristic of the coherent vortices in the redeveloping boundary layer was discussed. Static wall pressure is measured by a micro-pressure scanning system. The incipient formation positions are pointed out statistically. Without roughness, the longitudinal structures with scales of 1.0h and 1.2h form later and distribute in a longer region compared to that with roughness. Fractal analysis is applied and the averaged fractal dimensions of the overall and sectional flow structures are calculated. If roughness is adopted, the fractal dimension will be larger and the turning point in the sectional fractal dimensions is earlier. However, the dimension tends to be one coincided value in the farther downstream.
