  • Design and fabrication of low-cost renewable carbon electrode materials and their thermo-kinetics for sustainable energy storage applications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials Today Sustainability. - : Elsevier. - 2589-2347. ; 20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To date, there have been few studies performed on the kinetics of thermal decomposition of renewable carbon and its use in energy storage devices. Novel renewable graphitic carbon from Acer saccharum, sugar maple (SM) heartwood, and Arachis hypogaea, peanut outer shell (PS), are used as anodes in lithium-ion coin cell batteries, with steady specific capacities of 180 mAh/g and 220 mAh/g, respectively, and both retain 100% columbic efficiency for over 350 cycles. Cyclic voltammetry reveals the different charge storage kinetic mechanisms of the two. The voltammogram of SM contains an oxidation peak indicating Li ion intercalation suitable for battery application, while PS lacks a peak; thus, showing potential for function as a supercapacitor. A kinetic study is undertaken on six carbon sources to improve the understanding of the thermal degradation process leading to renewable graphitic carbon. Consistent results are shown across the various model-free methods, indicating that they can accurately describe the devolatilization process. The renewable graphitic carbons morphological features were studied by SEM, XRD, Raman and nitrogen adsorption isotherms. As SM and PS compare favorably to the electrodes they replace, renewable graphitic carbon has the potential for use in a wide variety of novel applications, such as organic thin film transistors, fuel cells, organic batteries, supercapacitors, and other bioelectronics.

  • Spatial variation of groundwater arsenic distribution in the Chianan Plain, SW Taiwan : Role of local hydrogeological factors and geothermal sources
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 518, s. 393-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here major ion, trace element, stable and radioisotope data based on forty-six groundwater samples collected from various locations along few selected profiles across the Chianan Plain, southwestern Taiwan including the area affected by well known Blackfoot disease manifested by peripheral vascular gangrene. The objective of the study was to understand the role of local hydrogeology in terms of spatial variation of arsenic concentration in groundwater wells of the entire Chianan Plain and the foothill belt of the Central Mountain Range. An attempt has also been made to assess the contribution of nearby geothermal sources to the arsenic budget in groundwater of the Chianan Plain. Our study shows a gradual increase in all major and trace ion concentrations including total arsenic from foothill belt (arsenic: median = 4 mu g/L, range = 0-667.6 mu g/L, sample number n = 16) to coastal zones (arsenic: median = 42.74 mu g/L, range = 0.14-348.6 mu g/L, n = 15) of the plain. Inverse geochemical modeling shows that Ca may be exchanged on clays, and that the degree of the exchange increases from the foothill to the coastal zones. Inverse geochemical modeling further suggests that the oxidation of organic matter (CH2O) required in various east-west profiles across the plain to balance the total bicarbonate concentration and CO2 input from organic matters significantly increases from the foothill to the coastal zones with transfer coefficients ranging from 1.55 x 10(-2) to 1.69 x 10(-5) mol/L. High concentrations of tritium (mean = 1.33 +/- 0.11 TU; n = 4) in foothill groundwater and low concentration of tritium in groundwater of central zone suggest gradually increasing water-rock interaction from the foothill to the coastal part. Few elevated arsenic (median = 171.8 mu g/L,maximum = 667.60 mu g/L, minimum = 24 mu g/L; n = 6) hotspots are identified in the foothill belt. Available lithologs and aquifer test data suggest that the presence of impermeable clay around those pockets possibly inhibits vertical and lateral flushing of the aquifer and aids strong water-rock interactions subsequently leading to release of arsenic into groundwater. Using oxygen isotope and chloride mass balance method, we estimated that geothermal sources can recharge a maximum of 4% of groundwater in proximal aquifers and contribute <2% of average As concentration in the groundwater of Chianan Plain. Our preliminary observations thus show some arsenic enrichment in foothill aquifers, providing a necessity of detailed study of the aquifer systems in these understudied regions. Moreover, our research indicates that the contribution of arsenic from geothermal sources is insignificant, which stands in contrast to earlier studies suggesting that mud volcanoes and thermal springs in the Western Foothill Belt of the Central Mountain Range were potential sources of groundwater arsenic in the Chianan Plain aquifers.

  • The High Mobility Group A1 (HMGA1) Chromatin Architectural Factor Modulates Nuclear Stiffness in Breast Cancer Cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International journal of molecular sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 1422-0067. ; 20:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plasticity is an essential condition for cancer cells to invade surrounding tissues. The nucleus is the most rigid cellular organelle and it undergoes substantial deformations to get through environmental constrictions. Nuclear stiffness mostly depends on the nuclear lamina and chromatin, which in turn might be affected by nuclear architectural proteins. Among these is the HMGA1 (High Mobility Group A1) protein, a factor that plays a causal role in neoplastic transformation and that is able to disentangle heterochromatic domains by H1 displacement. Here we made use of atomic force microscopy to analyze the stiffness of breast cancer cellular models in which we modulated HMGA1 expression to investigate its role in regulating nuclear plasticity. Since histone H1 is the main modulator of chromatin structure and HMGA1 is a well-established histone H1 competitor, we correlated HMGA1 expression and cellular stiffness with histone H1 expression level, post-translational modifications, and nuclear distribution. Our results showed that HMGA1 expression level correlates with nuclear stiffness, is associated to histone H1 phosphorylation status, and alters both histone H1 chromatin distribution and expression. These data suggest that HMGA1 might promote chromatin relaxation through a histone H1-mediated mechanism strongly impacting on the invasiveness of cancer cells.

  • Long-period grating fabricated by periodically tapering standard single-mode fiber
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - 1559-128X .- 2155-3165. ; 47:10, s. 1549-1552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We fabricated an asymmetric long-period grating (LPG) by periodically tapering a section of standard single-mode fiber using a resistive filament heating. The LPG exhibits large peak transmission attenuation of -30.31 dB with only 22 periods in a 1.0 cm long optical fiber and possesses unique characteristics for sensing applications. The bending and strain sensitivities are 1.74 nm m and 1.11 pm/mu epsilon, respectively. The polarization dependent loss is large, up to 11.65 dB, which is caused by an asymmetric index profile in the cross section of the tapered LPG.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea Severity Affects Amyloid Burden in Cognitively Normal Elderly: A Longitudinal Study.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. - 1073-449X .- 1535-4970. ; 197:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent evidence suggests that Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) may be a risk factor for developing Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's disease. However, how sleep apnea affects longitudinal risk for Alzheimer's disease is less well understood. To test the hypothesis that there is an association between severity of OSA and longitudinal increase in amyloid burden in cognitively normal elderly.Data was derived from a 2-year prospective longitudinal study that sampled community-dwelling healthy cognitively normal elderly. Subjects were healthy volunteers between the ages of 55 to 90, were non-depressed and had a consensus clinical diagnosis of cognitively normal. CSF Amyloid beta was measured using ELISA. Subjects received Pittsburgh compound B Positron Emission Tomography scans following standardized procedures. Monitoring of OSA was completed using a home sleep recording device. We found that severity of OSA indices (lnAHIall [F1,88=4.26, p<.05] and lnAHI4% [F1,87=4.36, p<.05]) were associated with annual rate of change of CSF Aβ42 using linear regression after adjusting for age, sex, BMI and ApoE4 status. LnAHIall and lnAHI4 were not associated with increases in ADPiB-mask most likely due to the small sample size although there was a trend for lnAHIall (F1,28=2.96, p=.09 and F1,28=2.32, n.s. respectively). In a sample of cognitively normal elderly, OSA was associated with markers of increased amyloid burden over the 2 year follow-up. Sleep fragmentation and/or intermittent hypoxia from OSA are likely candidate mechanisms. If confirmed, clinical interventions for OSA may be useful in preventing amyloid build-up in cognitively normal elderly.
