  • Comparison of the effects of using local and central snow deposits : a case study in Luleå
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology. - : IWA Publishing. - 0273-1223 .- 1996-9732. ; 48:9, s. 71-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to determine if an increased use of local land-based snow deposits would be more sustainable than the use of a central snow deposit. The study focused on transport related emissions, costs for transporting the snow, technical attendance, local effects, public acceptance, land use, effects on the recipient environmental control and potential for accidents. General information was obtained from an inventory regarding snow handling that was made in 14, geographically spread, Swedish municipalities during 2001. The comparison of costs for transporting snow and transport-related emissions was based on information gathered from the municipality of Luleå. The study showed that using local land-based snow deposits would decrease traffic-related emissions such as CO2, CO and NOx by 40% annually and would decrease the annual cost for transporting snow by nearly 80%. On the other hand local snow deposits may lead to an increased risk of accidents and to negative local effects such as delayed growing season, flooding and drainage problems. Available land for local snow deposits in the cities is hard to find, and is usually expensive. Therefore a combination of local and central snow deposits is likely to be the most realistic option.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals in snow along a highway
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology. - : IWA Publishing. - 0273-1223 .- 1996-9732. ; 54:6-7, s. 195-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snow quality and its variations due to distance from the road were studied. Also, how the snow quality changes over time during the melting period was discussed. Snow samples were collected at three occasions during the winter of 2004. The samples were taken along a highway in the Luleå region, Sweden, with an average daily traffic load of 9,200 vehicles. Snow samples were taken perpendicular to the road and at different distances. The snow samples were analysed for metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Also, weather parameters such as temperature, precipitation, and wind speed and wind direction were measured. The highest total metal and PAH concentrations were found at the sample site closest to the road and at the end of the season. Before the melting period started, 42-57% of the total amount of metals and PAH were found in the first 1 m of the snow pack. This information could be valuable when one is discussing how to achieve sustainable snow-handling management.

  • Mapping the CDIO Syllabus to the UNESO Key Competences for Sustainability
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International CDIO Conference. - 2002-1593. ; , s. 67-84
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a framework of key competencies for sustainability defined by UNESCO is used to evaluate the relevance of the CDIO Syllabus for promoting engineering education for sustainable development. The evaluation is performed in two steps. First, topics, terms and concepts in the CDIO Syllabus that corresponds to the different UNESCO key competencies are identified. The second step is a qualitative discussion where areas of strong mapping are highlighted and aspects that could be better visualized or strengthened in, or added to, the Syllabus are identified. Differences in definitions of various concepts between the CDIO Syllabus and the UNESCO key competencies and the overall relation between the two frameworks are discussed. It is concluded that the CDIO Syllabus is rather well aligned with the UNESCO framework, however several opportunities (not to say needs) for strengthening the Syllabus in relation to the key competencies are identified. The UNESCO key competencies are found to be useful instruments for scrutinizing and updating the CDIO Syllabus. Other opportunities for knowledge and methods transfer between the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) domain and the Engineering Education domain are identified. The paper is proposed to be used as basis for updating the CDIO Syllabus into a version 3.0 for maintaining its relevance in a changing world.

  • Mind the gap : Analysis of two pilot projects of a home telehealth service for persons with complex conditions in a Swedish hospital
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1472-6963. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Developing and implementing home telehealth (HTH) services for patients with chronic conditions is a challenge. HTH services provide continuous and integrated care to patients, but very often pilot projects face non-adoption and abandonment issues. Change processes in healthcare are often complex and require learning to adapt to non-linear and unpredictable events. Complexity science can thus provide a complementary view to the predominant Quality Improvement (QI) approach in healthcare. In this study of two pilot projects in a Swedish hospital, we explore how a theory-driven approach can be used (a) to support the development of a self-monitoring HTH service in hospital care and (b) to evaluate staff and patients' experiences from early adoption. Methods: To plan and evaluate the service for the recipients (i.e., patients and healthcare providers), we used the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) tool in combination with two complexity-informed frameworks: the Non-adoption, Abandonment, Scale-up, Spread and Sustainability (NASSS) framework, and the joint Complexity Assessment Tool (CAT). The theory-informed development process led to two pilot projects of an HTH service for patients with heart failure and COVID-19. We collected data from multiple sources (project documents, a survey on readiness for change among staff, and semi-structured interviews with patients and staff) and analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach. Results: Patients and staff perceived the services as valuable as they enabled rapid feedback, and improved communication and collaboration between patients and healthcare providers. Yet, despite the extensive development efforts, there was a perceived gap between how individuals valued the service and the capacity of adopters, the organization, and the wider system to effectively integrate these services into routine care. Conclusions: The combined use of PDSA, NASSS, and CAT can support the development and evaluation of HTH services that are perceived as valuable by individual patients and staff. For successful adoption, the value for individuals must be supported by organizational efforts to learn how to integrate new routines and tasks into clinical practice and daily life, and how to coordinate multiple providers within and outside the hospital walls.

  • Slöjdundervisning i grundsärskolan : En didaktisk studie om förutsättningar för Bildning
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to increase knowledge about sloyd education in compulsory school for students with intellectual disability (CSID). The thesis is based in critical-constructive didactic theory and takes an interest in how sloyd education can create conditions for students to acquire Bildung, in terms of self-determination, co-determination and solidarity. Teaching and learning are understood as complex processes of social interaction involving the teacher, the student and the content at stake. Classrooms and schools are seen as subsystems of the society, thus, conditions for Bildung are manifested on several levels. Two part-studies produced the empirical material. A web survey asked questions about how arts education in CSID is valued and organised and was answered by 124 principals. A multiple case study examined the didactic relation, that is the teaching-studying-learning process. Teachers’ and students’ joint actions were analysed, as well as four aspects of content knowledge: practical, theoretical, social and aesthetic. A total of 4 sloyd teachers, 19 students and 12 paraprofessionals participated. In all, 43 sloyd lessons were video-recorded and 28 interviews with elements of stimulated recall were conducted. The results highlight factors at two levels related to students’ acquisition of Bildung. At school level, sloyd differs from music and visual art regarding teaching facilities and teachers’ competence. Conditions also vary depending on students’ age, the extent of students’ disability and principals’ school responsibility. At classroom level, five pedagogical situations exemplify how different didactic relations emerge through the joint actions of teachers and students. The conditions for Bildung vary depending on the content knowledge and the teachers’ and students’ moves in the joint actions, in the sense of who chooses and takes responsibility for developing the content and whether or not there is room for changes of the content over time.

  • Scenarios for sustainable futures beyond GDP growth 2050
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The idea of continued economic growth is increasingly questioned and critically analysed on the basis of its potential negative sustainability impact. Along with the critique, visions and strategies for alternative systems need also be brought onto the agenda. The aim of this paper is to present the qualitative content of scenarios that explore sustainability strategies for Swedish society when economic growth is not seen as an end in itself, and the goal is instead other values/goals that society might wish to achieve. Multi-target backcasting scenarios are developed, that illustrate future states in which four sustainability targets (climate, land use, participation and resource security) are to be attained. The focus of the four scenarios is: 1) collaborative economy, 2) local self-sufficiency, 3) automation for quality of life, and 4) circular economy in the welfare state. In the paper, we also present the process of the development of the scenarios and feedback from stakeholders. Although the focus is on Sweden, the process and scenarios should also be relevant for other similar countries. The scenarios are discussed in terms of their relevance and their purpose, the fulfilment of the sustainability goals and the multi-target approach.
