  • Revisiting Firm Size and Technology Centrality in University-Industry Interaction: A Study of Firms' Academic Patents in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ESF-APE-INV workshop: “Scientists & Inventors” – KU Leuven, 10-11 May 2012.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper re-examines the debate on whether, and how firm size, affects the propensity of firms to engage with universities and academic scientists, and in particularly whether that interaction occurs within firms’ core or non-core technologies. This paper makes two contributions in relation to this question. First, the paper contributes empirically by re-examining this issue of firm size and technology centrality for university-industry interaction, based upon new evidence from the APE-INV database on European academic patents. The database for Sweden, as further described below, is unique at the individual level, and it is now complete for the population of academic scientists for 2004 and 2011, and a partial population 2009. The second contribution is to propose a theoretical framework about the value that firms may place upon academic involvement in industrial invention. The aim is that this framework can help explain the returns gained by firms of different sizes, when interacting with academic scientists over patents.

  • What characterizes firms' academic patents? Academic involvement in industrial invention in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 19:7, s. 585-606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the characteristics and impact of academic involvement in industrial invention processes, by comparing firms' academic patents and their non-academic patents. In contrast to previous research that studies university-owned patents, this paper analyzes firm-owned patents. These provide insight into the characteristics and relative importance of inventions resulting from university-industry collaboration. The empirical analysis in this paper is based on a database of Swedish academic patents. Our results indicate that academic involvement mainly takes place in inventions highly related to firms' technology base. The findings moreover show that firms' academic patents, as compared to their non-academic patents, have lower importance in firms' core technological fields but higher importance in marginal fields. The paper also provides an interpretation of these results, suggesting that firms involve academics for problem-solving activities in their core technological fields.

  • The Forgotten Individuals in the Commercialization of Science: Attitudes and skills in relation to commercialization in Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: McKelvey, M. and M. Holmén (2008). Learning to Compete European Universities: From Social Institutions to Knowledge Business. - Cheltenham UK : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781848440012 - 978 1 84844 001 2
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter addresses whether and why individual researchers have the skills and attitudes necessary for commercialization in Sweden, and place this in relation to the services provided by the university for commercialization. The Swedish innovation system has been focused upon explicitly organizing the support structure of an individual university, and includes services such as technology transfer offices, access to patent attorneys, localities of science parks, consultancy for business plans and setting up companies, etc. Much current public policy and also the strategy documents of specific universities stress the need to build such large-scale systems. This chapter analyzes commercialization and patenting, through a questionnaire to 1200 Swedish university researchers, with a 24% response rate. The researchers work within six research fields, namely fluid mechanics, wood technology, biotechnology, computer science, automatic control and inorganic chemistry. The questionnaire of Swedish academics also includes research groups at different universities within these fields. All research centres financed by the strategic research grants had a mission to both develop ‘high quality science’ and to ‘promote interaction with industry’ within their field. This chapter thus turns the question from the national innovation system towards skills and attitudes of the individual researcher.

  • Biotechnology Industries
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Hanusch, Horst and Andreas Pyka. Elgar Companion to Neo-Schumpeterian Economics. - Cheltenham, UK : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781843762539
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter considers theoretical arguments and empirical evidence, in order to understand the economic dynamics of modern biotechnology from a neo-Schumpeterian perspective. The biotechnology industries include economic activities and firms, which depend upon knowledge related to living organisms and biological processes. This chapter considers the following aspects of the biotechnology industries: (1) the global biotechnology industries, (2) science and innovation processes in biotechnology, and (3) methods and theory in appreciative theorizing.

  • Can public policy regenerate a traditional industry through collaborative research? The case of the Swedish food industry
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: DRUID Society conference 2014, CBS, Copenhagen, June 16-18. ; 2014:1872
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the regeneration of a traditional industry through the intersection of business innovation, public policy and the development of capabilities in firms. Our theoretical contribution is to propose that and conceptualize how public policy can indirectly boost the competitive advantage of a traditional industry by stimulating the development of firm capabilities to innovate through supporting collaborative research between universities and industry. To illustrate this proposition, we present an exploratory case study of a specific public policy initiative for collaborative research and structural change in the food industry in Sweden, from the mid-1990s to mid-2000s. The findings from this case study suggest that such public policy initiatives over time can and do develop firm capabilities to innovate in a traditional industry such as the food industry.
