  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Dynamics of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship business strategy & public policy edited by Franco Malerba, Yannis Caloghirou, Maureen McKelvey, Slavo Radosevic.. - United Kingdom : Routledge. - 9781138025288 ; , s. 19-47
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) helps renew the economy, giving rise to new industries but also to entrepreneurial-driven renewal within existing industries. This chapter proposes a conceptualize KIE as a broad concept, including a definition and a model. This chapter examines specific aspects of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship, presenting a conceptualization. The chapter also discusses framework how to operationalize the dimensions of the definition through various research strategies, and explains how the AEGIS project did so. Knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship is considered a key socio-economic phenomenon that drives innovation, and economic growth, and is at the base of the competitiveness of countries.

  • Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship and Future Research Directions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Joseph Schumpeter Society Conference, June 2016, Montreal.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper focuses upon a particular type of entrepreneurship, namely knowledge intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) and future research trajectories. Our approach follows a Schumpeterian approach, in the sense that entrepreneurship is driven by the innovation and the activities of entrepreneurs, who are responding to opportunities in markets and technology. Moreover, entrepreneurial activities introduce uncertainty and disequilibrium into the economy, which in turn promote economic development. More specifically, this paper focuses upon the particular case where advanced knowledge and innovation are the basis of competitive advantage for entrepreneurs. We propose that KIE firms, which introduce innovation and disequilibrium in the economy and rely upon advanced knowledge, can be identified across all types of manufacturing and service sectors, and they do so by taking advantage of diverse innovative opportunities. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to expand the discussion of how to conceptualize the existence, and importance of, knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in order to propose directions for future research, in terms of indicators, measurements and interesting topics.

  • Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship - Beyond the Schumpeterian Entrepreneur
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit), SPRU 50th Anniversary Conference, University of Sussex, UK. - : University of Sussex, SPRU 50th, 7-9th September 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a conceptualization of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship (KIE). We propose that a relevant type of entrepreneurship in modern economies is based on knowledge, and the related knowledge sources, skills, activities and networks. A first contribution of this paper is that we propose a broader and deeper theoretical understanding of KIE. Knowledge intensive entrepreneurship refers to new learning organizations that generate new knowledge or use, transform or recombine existing knowledge and are problem solvers through innovation systems and knowledge networks. A second contribution of this paper is to examine more in detail, empirically, how and why linkages between the KIE venture and innovation system occur.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship is a conceptualization of small, young firms which rely upon knowledge and innovation to compete. This paper presents an motivation of the need for this new conceptualization, as well as evidence from 86 case studies and from a survey of more than 4000 such firms in Europe.

  • Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship: Going Beyond the Schumpeterian Entreprenuer
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The 15th Globelics Conference, Athens, Greece, 11-13 October, 2017. - : Globelics Organization.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a definition and stylized process model of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship. The paper proposes an integration of the Schumpeterian tradition with evolutionary theory and the innovation system approach. There is a clear need to go beyond the Schumpeterian entrepreneur, in order to properly take into account the diffusion, use and creation of knowledge in innovation and entrepreneurship, and its dynamic, evolving and systemic perspective. The modern economy is knowledge intensive, and hence knowledge intensive entrepreneurship can occur in all sectors and countries. The paper also presents empirical evidence of the empirical relevance of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in the economy, based on a large scale survey. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship. - : Now Publishers. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 14:6, s. 555-681
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interplay between innovation, knowledge and entrepreneurship constitutes a major driver of the economic, social and cultural development in modern societies and has major implications for public policy. To understand these broad trends, a novel literature on knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship has recently emerged. In this book we provide a presentation of the key concepts, the relevant empirical findings and the main specific insights. We take a Schumpeterian, evolutionary and innovation system view of entrepreneurship, knowledge and innovation. In the conceptual framework proposed in this book, knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurs are involved in the creation, diffusion and use of knowledge; introduce new products and technologies; draw resources and ideas from the innovation system in which they operate; and introduce change and dynamism into the economy. This volume provides detailed insights into the progress made in defining and understanding knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship both theoretically and empirically; in discussing the current analytical understanding and empirical evidence; and in proposing the key directions and topics for future research.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 54:2, s. 503-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes a novel conceptualization of knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship, which can capture the main characteristics of a vital phenomenon in the modern economy. Our conceptualization is based upon the integration of Schumpeterian entrepreneurship, evolutionary economics, and innovation systems approach. It consists of a theoretical definition and a stylized process model. According to this view, knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurs are involved in the creation, diffusion, and use of knowledge; introduce new products and technologies; draw resources and ideas from their innovation system; and introduce change and dynamism into the economy. In the article, we also offer an empirical definition of knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship, which we then use to identify its key characteristics and relevance. We conclude with recommendations for a future research agenda.
