    • The mobile robot kinematic model is a nonlinear affine system, which is constrained by velocity and acceleration limits. Therefore, the traditional control methods may not solve the tracking problem because of the physical constraint. In this paper, we present the nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) algorithm to track the desired trajectory based on neural-dynamic optimization. In the proposed algorithm, the NMPC scheme utilizes a new neural network named the varying-parameter convergent differential neural network (VPCDNN) which is a Hopfifield-neural network structure with respect to the differential equation theory to solve the quadratic programming (QP) problem. The new network structure converges to the global optimal solution and it is more efficient than traditional numerical methods. In the simulation, we verify that the proposed method is able to successfully track reference trajectories with a two-wheel mobile robot. The experimental validation has been conducted in simulation and the results show that the proposed method is able to precisely track the trajectory maintaining a high robustness based on the VPCDNN solver.

    • This chapter gives a comprehensive introduction to state-of-the-art energy-efficient communications, focusing on the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers of wireless communication systems. The PHY layer consists of RF circuits, modulation, power control, and channel coding units, and so on and delivers data transmission as reliably as possible. The MAC layer ensures network-wide efficient resource management while maintaining quality of service (QoS) requirements of individual users. As wireless is a shared communication medium, with wireless communications, device energy consumption is not only affected by the designs of different layers of the point-to-point communicating link but also by the interactions of all links in the network. A system approach is therefore necessary for energy-efficient wireless communications system design. The focus of this chapter is on wireless system design, analysis, and optimization emphasizing energy efficiency enhancement while meeting given performance requirements. Since the design of all protocol layers impact energy consumption, this chapter introduces cross-layer energy-efficient techniques to reduce redundant message transfers and the associated energy consumption. Cross-layer techniques exploit interactions between different layers to significantly improve energy efficiency and adaptability to service, traffic, and environment dynamics.

  • Using Existing Infrastructure to Realize Low-Cost and Flexible Photovoltaic Power Generation in Areas with High-Power Demand in China

    • Energy Policy; Energy Resources; Energy Systems; Energy Management © 2020 This study develops a new concept involving using the existing infrastructure for photovoltaic (PV) generation to reduce the costs associated with increased land use and to avoid curtailment due to the mismatch between power supply and demand. We establish a method to estimate the technological potential and economic performance of the PV systems deployed in coal-fired power plants in China. The potential capacity of the examined 1,082 units in China reaches 4 GWe, which is equivalent to 32% of China's newly installed distributed PV capacity in 2019. A total of 87% of PV systems achieve plant-side grid parity compared with desulfurized coal benchmark electricity prices. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the use of rooftops and coal storage sheds in power plants to facilitate low-cost, flexible PV power generation, thus opening a new channel for future PV generation development.

  • Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy due to biallelic pathogenic variants in PIGQ : Report of seven new subjects and review of the literature

    • We investigated seven children from six families to expand the phenotypic spectrum associated with an early infantile epileptic encephalopathy caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the phosphatidylinositol glycan anchor biosynthesis class Q (PIGQ) gene. The affected children were all identified by clinical or research exome sequencing. Clinical data, including EEGs and MRIs, was comprehensively reviewed and flow cytometry and transfection experiments were performed to investigate PIGQ function. Pathogenic biallelic PIGQ variants were associated with increased mortality. Epileptic seizures, axial hypotonia, developmental delay and multiple congenital anomalies were consistently observed. Seizure onset occurred between 2.5 months and 7 months of age and varied from treatable seizures to recurrent episodes of status epilepticus. Gastrointestinal issues were common and severe, two affected individuals had midgut volvulus requiring surgical correction. Cardiac anomalies including arrythmias were observed. Flow cytometry using granulocytes and fibroblasts from affected individuals showed reduced expression of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins. Transfection of wildtype PIGQ cDNA into patient fibroblasts rescued this phenotype. We expand the phenotypic spectrum of PIGQ-related disease and provide the first functional evidence in human cells of defective GPI-anchoring due to pathogenic variants in PIGQ.

  • Ice-assisted Porous Poly(ionic liquid)/MXene Composite Membranes for Solar Steam Generation

    • Controlled regulation of polymer-based porous membranes via innovative methods is of considerable interest yet it remains a challenge. Herein, we established a general approach to fabricate porous polyelectrolyte composite membranes (PPCM)s from poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and MXene via an ice-templating method. This process enabled the formation of a uniformly distributed macroporous structure within the membrane. The unique characteristics of the as-produced composite membranes displays significant light-to-heat conversion and excellent performance for solar-driven water vapor generation. This facile synthetic strategy breaks new grounds for developing composite porous membranes as high-performance solar steam generator for clean water production.
