  • Nanofluidics in hollow nanowires
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: NANOTECHNOLOGY. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 21:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a novel scheme for producing nanotube membranes using free-standing hollow nanowires, with easily controllable dimensions. GaAs–AlInP core–shell nanowires were grown by metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy and were partially embedded in a polymer film. The GaAs core and substrate were etched selectively, leaving tubes with open access to both sides of the membrane. Electrophoretic transport of T4-phage DNA through the hollow nanowires was demonstrated using epifluorescence microscopy.

  • Ion Tracks for Micro- and Nanofabrication : From Single Channels to Superhydrophobic Surfaces
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A method is described for preset-count irradiations between 1 and 100 ions singling-out individual ions from an ion beam with more than a billion ions arriving per second. The ion tracks are etched in a conductometric system with real-time evaluation of the acquired data. The etch process can be interrupted when reaching a preset channel diameter. Cylindrical channels are obtained by adding surfactants to the etch solution forming a self-assembled barrier between etching medium and polymer. Asymmetric etching of single ion tracks leads to pH sensitive conical pores with diode-like properties. Using etched channels as template, homogeneous and multilayer magnetic single-wires are electrodeposited. The magnetoresistivity of the wires is studied. Single-track applications comprise critical apertures (cylindric, conic, necked), asymmetric pores (pH sensitive, biospecific), Giant Magneto Resistance sensors, and spintronic devices. On the basis of studies with individual ion tracks we tackled tilted multiporous systems such as ion beam lithography with a masked ion beam leading to micro-structures with inclined walls and anisotropic superhydrophobic ion track textures, analogous to biological shingle structures on butterfly wings. We demonstrated qualitatively, that the asymmetry of the texture translates into motion under ultrasonic agitation. This could lead to the development of rotary drives.

  • Gallium phosphide nanowire arrays and their possible application in cellular force investigations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B. - : American Vacuum Society. - 1520-8567. ; 27:6, s. 3092-3094
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors report the fabrication of gallium phosphide nanowire arrays that can be used for cellular force measurements. The nanowire positions are defined using electron beam lithography and the nanowires are grown using metal organic vapor phase epitaxy. By varying the nanowire diameter, length, and spacing from substrate to substrate, they can expect to probe cell forces over several orders of magnitude, depending on the chosen substrate. The small diameter of the nanowires allows them to densely pack the array and to achieve unprecedented spatial resolution for future cell force-array applications.

  • Nano-Schottky contacts realized by bottom-up technique
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: INEC 2010 - 2010 3rd International Nanoelectronics Conference, Proceedings. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 9781424435432 ; , s. 252-253
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Properties of nanostructures realized by bottom-up techniques are often different from their bulk counterparts. Here we present a study of a nano-Schottky contact formed at the interface between a gold catalytic particle and an epitaxially grown GaxIn1-xAs/InAs nanowire. Selective electrical connections formed to the catalytic particle on one side and to the InAs segment on the other side allowed electrical and optical characterization of the formed junction. We demonstrate that the heterostructure region adjacent to the catalytic particle may act as an ultra-small volume unipolar photodetector with potentially ultra-fast response.

  • Functional and morphological studies of in vivo vascularization of 3D-bioprinted human fat grafts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Bioprinting. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-8866. ; 23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting offers the ability to design and biofabricate 3D structures based on autologous fat; however, the lack of vascularization in larger 3D-bioprinted constructs represents a limiting factor that hampers translation of this technology from bench to bedside. 3D bioprinting using microfractured fat mixed with nanocellulose–alginate hydrogel can promote vascularization through connections of fragments of vessels included in the fat. In this study, we determined the perfusion and diffusion characteristics of 3D-bioprinted fat constructs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and assessed correlations between perfusion and angiogenesis within the printed constructs. Microfractured human fat from liposuction was printed with tunicate nanocellulose–alginate hydrogel, followed by transplantation of the constructs (10 × 10 × 3 mm) into nude mice that underwent longitudinal MRI for up to 99 days. Confirmation of vascularization was undertaken using immunohistochemical and histologic analyses. Before implantation, the constructs contained abundant fat tissue and fragments of human blood vessels (CD31+ and Ku80+), with subsequent in vivo MRI analysis following transplantation indicating low perfusion and suggesting their continued survival mainly by diffusion. Additionally, we observed a high diffusion coefficient (~2 × 10−3 mm2/s) that was preserved throughout the observation period. Following explantation, evaluation revealed that the constructs displayed preserved histology along with a mixture of human (Ku80+) and murine (Ku80−) erythrocyte-containing vessels. These results demonstrated successful interconnection of blood-vessel fragments from microfractured human fat via angiogenesis to form a vascular network with the host circulation, thereby confirming vascularization of the 3D-bioprinted fat constructs.

  • Vascularization of tissue engineered cartilage-Sequential in vivo MRI display functional blood circulation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Establishing functional circulation in bioengineered tissue after implantation is vital for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Native cartilage is avascular and thrives on diffusion, which in turn depends on proximity to circulation. Here, we investigate whether a gridded three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted construct would allow ingrowth of blood vessels and thus prove a functional concept for vascularization of bioengineered tissue. Twenty 10 x 10 x 3-mm 3Dbioprinted nanocellulose constructs containing human nasal chondrocytes or cell-free controls were subcutaneously implanted in 20 nude mice. Over the next 3 months, the mice were sequentially imaged with a 7 T small-animal MRI system, and the diffusion and perfusion parameters were analyzed. The chondrocytes survived and proliferated, and the shape of the constructs was well preserved. The diffusion coefficient was high and well preserved over time. The perfusion and diffusion patterns shown by MRI suggested that blood vessels develop over time in the 3D bioprinted constructs; the vessels were confirmed by histology and immunohistochemistry. We conclude that 3D bioprinted tissue with a gridded structure allows ingrowth of blood vessels and has the potential to be vascularized from the host. This is an essential step to take bioengineered tissue from the bench to clinical practice.

  • Fabrication and characterization of a molecular adhesive layer for micro- and nanofabricated electrochemical electrodes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: 7th International Conference on Nanometer-Scale Science and Technology and 21st European Conference on Surface Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When making nanoelectrodes for applications in liquid cells it is plausible that the less noble metal layer may be negatively affected, i.e. it will be etched away leading to very unstable conditions during operation. Here we describe a dry method to produce such a molecular layer consisting of mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTS) making it possible to controllable and reproducibly form a covalently bound monolayer of MPTS to the SiO2 surface. From Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements we could conclude that the layer thickness corresponds to a monolayer. We have electrochemically characterized such electrodes by cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, we have successfully patterned such layers at both micro- and nanometer scale showing the possibilities to fabricate chemically selective and active areas that may be used in various applications

  • Improving stamps for 10 nm level wafer scale nanoimprint lithography
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Microelectronic Engineering. - 1873-5568. ; 61-2, s. 441-448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The smaller the features on the stamp the more important are the interactions between stamp and polymer layer. A stamp rich in small structures will effectively show a surface area enlargement, which generally leads to adhesion of the polymer to the stamp. This makes a subsequent imprint impossible without troublesome and time-consuming cleaning. The anti-adhesion properties of Si- or SiO2-based stamps can be improved by binding fluorinated silanes covalently to the surface. In this paper, we demonstrate that the deposition procedure as well as the environment during deposition are important with respect to the quality and performance of the molecular layer.
