  • Economic Hardship : an Issue for Children's Agency at Home, at School and at the Social Welfare Office
  • 2006
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This paper introduces a research project aiming at understanding children’s experiences of living in economic hardship in Sweden and presents some initial empirical results. The newly started project is focusing on children’s own perspective, their experiences in everyday life in various social contexts, and their financial and social strategies in interaction with other children, their parents and professionals at school and in the social welfare agencies. What does economic hardship mean to children in terms of material conditions, social relations, school work, identity or wellbeing? Which scope of agency do children see and how do they use it? How do the legal framework and the practices at school and at social welfare agencies construct the child (of various age and gender), the mother and the father in this kind of cases? Are children seen as actors, victims, consumers or objects of their parents’ responsibility as providers? Are children allowed a scope of action in the financial decision making processes in their family and / or in formal processes of financial support? If so, what kind of agency and what happens when they participate? Which kind of interpretative framework concerning children’s actions is used by the adults involved in the interaction with the children? The empirical work is conducted in two different municipalities in Sweden and will include analysis of interviews and a survey with children from three age categories (6-7, 11-12, 15-16), their parents (single as well as two parent families), school staff and social welfare officers, documents on local policies and court records. The project draws on childhood sociology, and research on gender, organization and professions. This paper will focus the legal processes concerning social welfare to families with children; children’s visibility in the process and their eventual scope of agency. The project is ending 2008.

  • En erfarenhet rikare? : En kvalitativ studie av barns strategier och barnfattigdomens villkor i välfärdsstaten
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the context of the Swedish welfare state, the issue of child poverty has over the past decade become increasingly prominent within the political agenda. Most research on child poverty has been based on statistics and research on children’s everyday life and their experiences in situations of economic hardship has been in demand in international as well as Swedish research. The aim of this thesis is to explore and analyze children’s experiences of living within economic hardship as part of their identity work. In addition, it highlights how their agency can be understood as a way of dealing with their situation, as well as how child poverty – and the child position in a welfare state setting -  is understood and conceptualized by the society they live in.  The analysis was based on an interview study involving seventeen children between the ages of 6–18 in families living on or below the limit for receiving welfare benefits. The purpose of the interviews was to explore how these children experience economic hardship at home and among same-aged children, focusing their own strategies and agency. The thesis uses the field of childhood sociology as a theoretical starting point, and the empirical findings are analyzed with an interactionist approach which highlights the meaning of interaction and agency in relation to identity work. The strategies deployed by the children in this study was interpreted in the context of the limited space for agency that the child position entails as well as how their positioning as children, by themselves and others, creates a new understanding of the way poverty is managed by them. This thesis seeks to problematize the issue of child poverty in Sweden by stressing its complexities.  The thesis also emphasizes that it would be a simplification to label these children as merely stigmatized since the status of poverty as a stigma for children can be questioned.

  • Professional’s views on children in economic hardship
  • 2007
I vad mån görs ekonomiskt utsatta barn synliga?

  • Antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with dysglycaemia : A neglected cardiovascular risk factor?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Diabetes & Vascular Disease Research. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD. - 1479-1641 .- 1752-8984. ; 17:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Cardiovascular disease is a serious complication in patients with dysglycaemia, defined as either type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. Research focusing on the identification of potential markers for atherothrombotic disease in these subjects is warranted. The antiphospholipid syndrome is a common acquired prothrombotic condition, defined by a combination of thrombotic events and/or obstetric morbidity and positivity of specific antiphospholipid antibodies. Available information on antiphospholipid antibodies in dysglycaemia is scarce. Objective: This study investigates the association between antiphospholipid antibodies and dysglycaemia. Patients/Methods: The PAROKRANK (periodontitis and its relation to coronary artery disease) study included 805 patients, investigated 6-10 weeks after a first myocardial infarction, and 805 matched controls. Participants without known diabetes (91%) underwent an oral glucose tolerance test. Associations between antiphospholipid antibodies (anti-cardiolipin and anti-beta 2 glycoprotein-I IgG, IgM and IgA) and dysglycaemia were analysed. Results: In total, 137 (9%) subjects had previously known type 2 diabetes and 371 (23%) newly diagnosed dysglycaemia. Compared with the normoglycaemic participants, those with dysglycaemia had a higher proportion with first myocardial infarction (61% vs 45%,p < 0.0001) and were more often antiphospholipid antibody IgG positive (8% vs 5%;p = 0.013). HbA1c, fasting glucose and 2-h glucose were significantly associated to antiphospholipid antibody IgG. Odds ratios (ORs) were 1.04 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.06), 1.14 (95% CI 1.00 - 1.27) and 1.12 (95% CI 1.04 - 1.21), respectively, after adjustments for age, gender and smoking. Conclusions: This study reports an association between antiphospholipid antibody IgG positivity and dysglycaemia. Further studies are needed to verify these findings and to investigate if antithrombotic therapy reduces vascular complications in antiphospholipid antibody positive subjects with dysglycaemia.
