  • Nudging green food: The effects of a hedonic cue, menu position, a warm-glow cue, and a descriptive norm
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Consumer Behaviour. - : Wiley. - 1472-0817 .- 1479-1838. ; 22:3, s. 557-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meat consumption is associated with both public health risks and substantial CO2 emissions. In a large-scale field-experiment, we applied four nudges to the digital menus in 136 hamburger restaurants. The nudges promoted vegetarian food purchases by either (1) changing the menu position of vegetarian food, or aligning vegetarian food with (2) a hedonic, taste-focused nudge, (3) the warm-glow effect, or (4) a descriptive social norm. These nudges were thus aimed to shift salience toward a certain goal or the salience of a specific alternative. Vegetarian food purchases were measured in two datasets analyzing if nudges affected customers' "route " to ordering vegetarian food (29,640 observations), and the total number of vegetarian food sold during the intervention (346,081 observations). Results showed that the position nudge affected customers route to buying vegetarian food. More specifically, making the "green category " more accessible made more customers order through that category. Interestingly, this did not affect the total number of vegetarian sales. However, results indicate that nudges that utilize the salience of goals, in particular hedonic goals, may have an overall positive effect on total vegetarian sales.

  • "Skeendet på stället" : Röster och samtidigheter i tre verk av Sara Lidman
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines how cultural encounters and asymmetrical power relationships are depicted in three works by Sara Lidman (1923–2004): Hjortronlandet (“Cloudberry Land”) from 1955, Med fem diamanter (“With Five Diamonds”) from 1964 and Samtal i Hanoi (“Conversations in Hanoi”) from 1966. They are set in three very different colonial contexts, northern Sweden in the early 20th century, Kenya in the early 1960’s and Vietnam in 1965, and take place in a time of transition when an agricultural, local way of life is challenged by a Eurocentric understanding of modernity and knowledge. In accordance with the postcolonial perspective the notions of modernity and colonialism are intimately intertwined in this analysis. Dichotomies such as centre and periphery, coloniser and colonised are problematised in the texts, and this study explores further the complexities that emerge in the encounters described. In terms of identity this also implicates ambivalence, individually as well as groupwise. In all three titles the ambivalence is shown at different levels of the texts, both thematically, narratologically and stylistically. I suggest that the literary reportage Samtal i Hanoi contains many aesthetic features similar to those found in the two novels, despite the difference in genres due to their relation to reality. Consequently, this implies that there is not a sharp distinction between Lidman as an author of novels and of documentary writing. The thesis also discusses the problem of representing the other’s voice, in a political sense as well as in the sense of literary writing, and the continual striving to do so as respectfully as possible. Regarding Lidman’s dialogic aestehics, this ambition is manifested for instance in a subversive use of language, of intertextuality and of hegemonic symbols and metaphors. By studying the dialogic tensions of concurrent, and sometimes opposing, voices in the texts, I show that the subversive literary strategies in Lidman’s works often create a certain discursive space which problematises not only the conceptions of Eurocentric modernity and knowledge but also contains an ethical appeal which reaches far beyond the text.

  • Cardiovascular risk with androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer: Potential mechanisms.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Urologic oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2496. ; 33:11, s. 464-75
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is frequently used for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. ADT is associated with numerous side effects related to its mode of action, namely the suppression of testosterone to castrate levels. Recently, several large retrospective studies have also reported an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in men receiving ADT, although these risks have not been confirmed by prospective randomized trials. We review the literature to consider the risk of cardiovascular disease with different forms of ADT and examine in detail potential mechanisms by which any such risk could be mediated. Mechanisms discussed include the metabolic syndrome resulting from low testosterone level and the potential roles of testosterone flare, gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors outside the pituitary gland, and altered levels of follicle-stimulating hormone. Finally, the clinical implications for men prescribed ADT for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer are considered.

  • Dehydroepiandrosterone and its Sulfate Predict the 5-Year Risk of Coronary Heart Disease Events in Elderly Men
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American College of Cardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0735-1097 .- 1558-3597. ; 64:17, s. 1801-1810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND The adrenal sex hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is present in serum mainly as the sulfate DHEA-S, is the most abundant steroid hormone in human blood. Its levels decline dramatically with age. Despite the great amount of literature on vascular and metabolic actions of DHEA/-S, evidence for an association between DHEA/-S levels and cardiovascular events is contradictory. OBJECTIVES This study tested the hypothesis that serum DHEA and DHEA-S are predictors of major coronary heart disease (CHD) and/or cerebrovascular disease (CBD) events in a large cohort of elderly men. METHODS We used gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze baseline levels of DHEA and DHEA-S in the prospective population-based Osteoporotic Fractures in Men study in Sweden (2,416 men, ages 69 to 81 years). Complete cardiovascular clinical outcomes were available from national Swedish registers. RESULTS During the 5-year follow-up, 302 participants experienced a CHD event, and 225 had a CBD event. Both DHEA and DHEA-S levels were inversely associated with the age-adjusted risk of a CHD event; the hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals per SD increase were 0.82 (0.73 to 0.93) and 0.86 (0.77 to 0.97), respectively. In contrast, DHEA/-S showed no statistically significant association with the risk of CBD events. The association between DHEA and CHD risk remained significant after adjustment for traditional cardiovascular risk factors, serum total testosterone and estradiol, C-reactive protein, and renal function, and remained unchanged after exclusion of the first 2.6 years of follow-up to reduce reverse causality. CONCLUSIONS Low serum levels of DHEA and its sulfate predict an increased risk of CHD, but not CBD, events in elderly men. (C) 2014 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.
