  • Psychotic experiences and physical health conditions in the United States
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Comprehensive Psychiatry. - : Elsevier. - 0010-440X .- 1532-8384. ; 90, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: Psychotic experiences are associated with physical health conditions, though the associations have not always been consistent in the literature. The current study examines the associations between psychotic experiences and several physical health conditions across four racial groups in the United States. Methods: We analyzed data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiological Surveys to examine the associations between psychotic experiences and physical health conditions across four racial groups (White, Black, Asian, Latino). We used multivariable logistic regression to calculated adjusted odds ratios and 95% Confidence Intervals. Results: Psychotic experiences were significantly associated with several physical health conditions depending on the condition and the racial group being examined. Further, the number of physical health conditions was associated with increasingly greater risk for psychotic experiences in a linear fashion. Conclusions: Psychotic experiences may serve as useful markers for physical health conditions and overall physical health status. Future studies should examine the underlying mechanisms between psychotic experiences and health, and explore the clinical utility of psychotic experiences for preventive interventions.

  • Long-range transport of air pollutants originating in China: A possible major cause of multi-day high-PM10 episodes during cold season in Seoul, Korea
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310. ; 109, s. 23-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Massive air pollutants originating in China and their trans-boundary transports are an international concern in East Asia. Despite its importance, details in the trans-boundary transport of air pollutants over East Asia and its impact on regional air quality remain to be clarified. This study presents an evidence which strong support that aerosols emitting in China play a major role in the occurrence of multi-day (≥4 days) severe air pollution episodes in cold seasons (October through March) for 2001-2013 in Seoul, Korea, where the concentration of PM10 (particulates with diameters≤10μm) exceeds 100μgm-3. Observations show that these multi-day severe air pollution episodes occur when a strong high-pressure system resides over the eastern China-Korea region. In such weather conditions, air pollutants emitted in eastern China/southwestern Manchuria are trapped within the atmospheric boundary layer, and gradually spread into neighboring countries by weak lower tropospheric westerlies. Understanding of trans-boundary transports of air pollutants will advance the predictability of local air quality, and will encourage the development of international measures to improve air quality. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Analysis of product efficiency in the Korean automobile market from a consumer’s perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Empirical Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0377-7332 .- 1435-8921. ; 38:1, s. 119-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we develop and describe a conceptual and methodological framework to measure technical and allocative efficiency at the product level considering consumer choice, which encompasses overall efficiency. Empirically, we combined data envelopment analysis and a discrete choice model in order to measure efficiency levels. The suggested framework is applied to the Korean automobile market. The relationship between the level of efficiency and market performance is discussed in terms of market share. ©Springer-Verlag 2009.

  • Comparative seed morphology and character evolution in the genus Lysimachia (Myrsinaceae) and related taxa
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Plant Systematics and Evolution. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0378-2697 .- 1615-6110. ; 271:3-4, s. 177-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated seed morphology in 34 species of the genus Lysimachia and in 14 species and two subspecies of six additional genera (Anagallis, Ardisiandra, Asterolinon, Glaux, Pelletiera, Trientalis), which have been shown to be closely related to, or are placed within Lysimachia in previous molecular studies. We studied seed shape, seed coat structure, and seed coat surface patterns. Three major types of seed shape were identified: (1) sectoroid, (2) polyhedral, and (3) coarsely rugose with concave hilar area. In addition, seeds may be keeled or winged. The outer layer of the seed coat is either sponge-like and adhering only loosely to the inner seed coat or it is thin and tightly adhering to the underlying tissue. Seed surface patterns can be divided into six main types: (1) reticulate, (2) tuberculate, (3) vesiculose, (4) colliculate, (5) undulate, or (6) poroid-alveolate. Seed surface patterns are mostly congruent with molecular phylogenetic relationships. A reticulate surface pattern is diagnostic of, e.g. Lysimachia subgenera Palladia and Hawaiian Lysimachiopsis. Mapping seed characters onto a recent phylogenetic tree, reveals that they provide potentially synapomorphic character states for various subclades of Lysimachia. Salient examples include a rugose seed shape, which turns out to be synapomorphic for the clade comprising the genus Pelletiera plus Asterolinon linum-stellatum and a sponge-like outer seed coat layer, which characterizes a clade with Lysimachia vulgaris, L. thyrsiflora, and L. terrestris, with an analogue that apparently evolved in parallel in Trientalis europaea. We also discuss possible habitat factors that may have favored the independent evolution of particular seed types such as winged seeds in various lineages.

  • Phylogenetic relationships among endemic Hawaiian Lysimachia (Myrsinaceae) : insights from nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequence data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Pacific Science. - : Pacific Science. - 0030-8870 .- 1534-6188. ; 67:7, s. 237-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 16 endemic Hawaiian species of Lysimachia form a monophyletic group referred to as subgenus Lysimachiopsis (Marr and Bohm 1997). The group has radiated into various habitats and most species are endemic to a single island. Previous taxonomic treatments have revealed problems, particularly within the L. hillebrandii/L. remyi complex. We conducted phylogenetic analyses including 12 species of the subgenus Lysimachiopsis using nuclear ribosomal DNA (ETS, ITS) and chloroplast DNA (rpl16, rpl20-rps12, rps16, trnH-psbA, trnS-G) sequences in order to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships. A combined analysis using all sequence data supports three major clades and provides new insights into the evolutionary history of the group, especially within the problematic L. hillebrandii/L. remyi complex. The resulting molecular phylogeny provides support for the following clades: (1) L. hillebrandii and L. waianaeensis, (2) L. remyi ssp. remyi, L. maxima, and L. remyi ssp. subherbacea, (3) L. remyi ssp. caliginis and L. remyi ssp. kipahuluensis, and (4) L. glutinosa, L. scopulensis, and L. kalalauensis. The phylogenetic pattern is largely congruent with the biogeographical distribution of the species in the Hawaiian Islands. Our results also indicate that earlier taxonomic treatments of the group need to be partially revised in order to reflect phylogenetic relationships.

  • Comparative analysis of plant dynamics by size : Korean manufacturing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Japanese Economic Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1352-4739 .- 1468-5876. ; 60:4, s. 512-538
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comparative analysis on Korean manufacturing plants is performed by size of plants and sources of TFP growth are decomposed into entry, exit, and survival effects of plants, focusing on the pre- and post-crisis periods. Additional survival analyses investigate internal and external determinants of the survival of plants. The results indicate that the exit of small- and medium-sized establishments (SMEs) with higher productivity is becoming problematic in the post-crisis period. The improvements in large-scale establishments (LSEs) after the crisis appeared to occur generally in high-technology industrial sectors; SMEs in low-technology industries are suffering from a sluggish market selection process. ©2009 The Authors. • Evaluation of credit guarantee policy using propensity score matching
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 33:3, s. 335-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we evaluate the effect of the credit guarantee policy by comparing a large sample of guaranteed firms and matched non-guaranteed firms from 2000 to 2003. The sample firms are compared with respect to growth rates of different performance indicators including: productivity, sales, employment, investment, R&D, wage level, and the survival of firms in the post crisis period. In order to avoid the selectivity problem, propensity score matching methodologies are adopted. Results suggest that credit guarantees influenced significantly firms’ ability to maintain their size, and increase their survival rate, but not to increase their R&D and investment and hence, their growth in productivity. Moreover, due to the adverse selection problem, firms with lower productivity were receiving guarantees. ©Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. 2008.

  • Total factor productivity in Korean manufacturing industries
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Global Economic Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1226-508X .- 1744-3873. ; 37:1, s. 23-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, parametric and non-parametric methods are employed to measure the total factor productivity (TFP) growth in the Korean manufacturing industry from 1993 to 2003. The analysis period contains both periods before and after the Asian financial crisis. The TFP growth rate is decomposed into different components. Also different elasticities are reported. By classifying the results by period and classifying a number of time invariant firm characteristics, such as sector, size, and location of firms, we observe systematic heterogeneity for each characteristic. We discuss the underlying causal factors. The results from a non-parametric approach are also compared with those of a parametric approach. ©2008 Institute of East and West Studies, Yonsei University, Seoul.

  • Mobility restrictions were associated with reductions in COVID-19 incidence early in the pandemic : evidence from a real-time evaluation in 34 countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most countries have implemented restrictions on mobility to prevent the spread of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), entailing considerable societal costs but, at least initially, based on limited evidence of effectiveness. We asked whether mobility restrictions were associated with changes in the occurrence of COVID-19 in 34 OECD countries plus Singapore and Taiwan. Our data sources were the Google Global Mobility Data Source, which reports different types of mobility, and COVID-19 cases retrieved from the dataset curated by Our World in Data. Beginning at each country's 100th case, and incorporating a 14-day lag to account for the delay between exposure and illness, we examined the association between changes in mobility (with January 3 to February 6, 2020 as baseline) and the ratio of the number of newly confirmed cases on a given day to the total number of cases over the past 14 days from the index day (the potentially infective 'pool' in that population), per million population, using LOESS regression and logit regression. In two-thirds of examined countries, reductions of up to 40% in commuting mobility (to workplaces, transit stations, retailers, and recreation) were associated with decreased cases, especially early in the pandemic. Once both mobility and incidence had been brought down, further restrictions provided little additional benefit. These findings point to the importance of acting early and decisively in a pandemic.
