  • Closed-Loop Combustion Control of HCCI Engines
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nonlinear and Hybrid Systems in Automotive Control. ; , s. 321-334
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The HCCI engine, with its excellent potential for high efficiency and low NOx emissions, is investigated from a control perspective. Combustion timing, i.e., where in the thermodynamic cycle combustion takes place, is identified as the most challenging problem with HCCI engine control. A number of different means for controlling combustion timing are suggested, and results using a dual-fuel solution are presented. This solution uses two fuels with different ignition characteristics to control the time of autoignition. Cylinder pressure measurement is suggested for feedback of combustion timing. A simple net-heat release algorithm is applied to the measurements, and the crank angle of 50% burnt is extracted. Open-loop instability is detected in some high-load regions of the operating range. This phenomenon is explained by positive feedback between the cylinder wall heating and ignition timing processes. Closed-loop performance is hampered by time delays and model uncertainties. This problem is particularly pronounced at operating points that are open-loop unstable.

  • National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Portfolio. - 2041-1723. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic. Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

  • Prostate cancer incidence, treatment and mortality : Empirical longitudinal register-based studies and methods for handling missing data
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The diagnostic activity for prostate cancer has increased substantially in Sweden, primarily due to increased use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing in asymptomatic men, and this has led to a large increase in diagnoses. There have also been changes in the diagnostic workup, guidelines, treatment strategies, and more effective treatments have been introduced in different phases of the disease. This thesis aims to increase the understanding of consequences of changes in diagnostic activity and treatment, with a focus on empirical studies, methodological development, and handling of missing data.In paper I, the survival of men with metastatic prostate cancer was investigated across calendar time periods by use of Kaplan-Meier analyses and Cox regression. The median survival from diagnosis increased with six months comparing men diagnosed 1998-2001 with men diagnosed 2010-2015, while median PSA decreased. In paper II, a discrete time multivariate longitudinal model was combined with a proxy for the unobserved level of diagnostic activity to produce prognoses of incidence and mortality. Simulations indicated that a higher diagnostic activity was associated with fewer men diagnosed with metastatic disease and fewer prostate cancer deaths. In paper III, we looked for clinical variables predictive of the survival of men with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). A new data base was created including longitudinal data on prescriptions of hormonal treatment, PSA, and cause of death. We found that PSA doubling time and PSA at time of CRCP were highly predictive and could be used for treatment decision. In paper IV, we estimated annual incidence of metastatic prostate cancer using different methods for handling missing data in metastatic status (M stage). Missing data in M stage was high and varied over calendar time and risk groups, yet each method indicated a downward trend in incidence. Although men with unknown metastatic status cannot be assumed to have nonmetastatic disease in general, this may be reasonable among those with tumour characteristics that indicate a low risk of metastases. In paper V, the estimation of multivariate longitudinal models was considered in a context where some events are observed on a coarser level (e.g. grouped) at some time points, causing gaps in the data. The likelihood function, score and observed information were derived under an independent coarsening mechanism. A simulation study was conducted comparing properties of several estimators including direct maximum likelihood and Monte Carlo Expectation Maximisation.

  • Delayed harvest of reed canary grass translocates more nutrients in rhizomes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, Section B - Soil and Plant Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0906-4710 .- 1651-1913. ; 59, s. 306-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two field experiments, one in large plots and the other in small framed plots, were conducted in Umea°, northern Sweden. The objectives were (1) to examine the seasonal patterns of rhizome growth and nutrient dynamics of the energy crop reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) in ley I and II, and (2) to evaluate the roles of soil type (mineral vs. organic), fertilisation level (0, 50, and 100 kg N ha-1), and season/harvest time (Oct-96, May-97, and Aug-97) on the rhizome growth and nutrient dynamics by means of a factorially designed experiment. The general pattern of rhizome growth was that biomass was low in June during initiation of shoot growth, but increased steadily during the growing season, reached a peak in late autumn, and remained high until next spring. The N and P accumulation in rhizomes followed a similar pattern. During ley years I and II, reed canary grass rhizome growth was less dependent on soil type, and more dependent on fertilisation and season, with fertilisation being the most important predictor of growth. The season/harvest time, followed by soil type, was the most important factor for both concentrations and therefore total uptake of N, P, and K in rhizomes. Soil type affected N content in rhizomes significantly, and also interacted with season and enhanced the effect on N, P, and K content in rhizomes. The seasonal dynamics of the nutrient content in rhizomes indicate a remobilisation of the nutrients from rhizomes to the regrowth of shoots and roots in spring and relocation/storage from aboveground shoots to rhizomes during late summer and autumn. The results of this study suggest that delaying the harvest to later than October would result in considerably more energy and nutrient resources being translocated from aboveground shoots to rhizomes for growth in the next season

  • Cephalic muscle development in the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of morphology. - : WILEY. - 0362-2525 .- 1097-4687. ; 279:4, s. 494-516
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lungfishes are the extant sister group of tetrapods. As such, they are important for the study of evolutionary processes involved in the water to land transition of vertebrates. The evolution of a true neck, that is, the complete separation of the pectoral girdle from the cranium, is one of the most intriguing morphological transitions known among vertebrates. Other salient changes involve new adaptations for terrestrial feeding, which involves both the cranium and its associated musculature. Historically, the cranium has been extensively investigated, but the development of the cranial muscles much less so. Here, we present a detailed study of cephalic muscle development in the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, which is considered to be the sister taxon to all other extant lungfishes. Neoceratodus shows several developmental patterns previously described in other taxa; the tendency of muscles to develop from anterior to posterior, from their region of origin toward insertion, and from lateral to ventral/medial (outside-in), at least in the branchial arches. The m.protractor pectoralis appears to develop as an extension of the most posterior m.levatores arcuum branchialium, supporting the hypothesis that the m.cucullaris and its derivatives (protractor pectoralis, levatores arcuum branchialium) are branchial muscles. We present a new hypothesis regarding the homology of the ventral branchial arch muscles (subarcualis recti and obliqui, transversi ventrales) in lungfishes and amphibians. Moreover, the morphology and development of the cephalic muscles confirms that extant lungfishes are neotenic and have been strongly influenced via paedomorphosis during their evolutionary history.
