    • During the last decade or so Polish women writers have published variety of titles which are symptomatic of the ‘new times’ and fashionable literary trends.  The most prominent samples include not only texts which can be broadly defined as ‘queer writing’ (novels by Ewa Schelling and Marta Dzido) but also works which are associated with pop culture and has been defined outside of Poland as ‘chick lit’.  I would argue that various novels authored by Katarzyna Grochola, who was once famously called the ‘Polish Bridget Jones’, belong to this category. Besides these two types of writing there has also been a significant development of ‘erotic novels,’ exemplified by such titles as Rdza (2008) by Ewa Berent and Nielegalne związki (2010) by Grażyna Plebanek. Although the two novels are quite diverse, they both transgress the conventional way of describing heterosexual sex scenes and erotic encounters.  What interests me especially in this type of literature is its depiction of cultural diversity on one hand and its local context on the other. Thus my primary concern in analysing the newly emerging type of women writing comes with the following question: To what extent do these writers consciously imitate the ‘Western European’ models and to what extent do they create their own local genre by responding to the needs of culture that no longer holds taboo topics regarding sexuality?

    • Małgorzata Anna Packalén ParkmanOn various forms of literary Polishness in SwedenIn recent years, numerous literary texts on Polish subjects have been published in Sweden.  At one time, some would have been classified as “émigré literature” and treated as a supplement to works originally printed in Poland. Today, many texts written outside Poland have lost their special status as well as their political impact.   After 2004, terms such as “writer in exile” or “refugee” became hard to justify once Poland joined the EU and people began crossing geographical borders and moving freely within Europe.  However, this intensive mobility does not mean that cultural differences among various countries have dissolved. In fact, it has thrown the question of individual and national identities into sharp focus by reinforcing mutual similarities and differences as well as encouraging each nation to revisit its roots, historical past and collective memory.   A lot has been written and said about the role of belles-lettres (both translations and writings on Polish matters written abroad) in creating an image of Poland, Poles and generally speaking, the category of  Polishness. In this article, the author examines different forms of this literary phenomenon in order to reveal its diverse nature in Sweden. She does so by discussing three works, each representing a different category of a broadly-defined Polishness.

    • M. Anna Packalén ParkmanDepartment of Modern Languages, Uppsala Universityanna.packalen@moderna.uu.seAbstract.Whither Polish literature? Some Observations on Contemporary Literary TrendsDuring the past decade, Polish women writers have published a variety of titles which aresymptomatic of the ‘new times’ and fashionable literary trends. The most prominent examples include not only texts which can be broadly defined as ‘queer writing’ (e.g. novels by Ewa Schilling and Marta Dzido), but also works which are associated with pop culture and have been defined outside of Poland as ‘chick lit. I would argue that various novels authored by Katarzyna Grochola, who has famously been called the ‘Polish Bridget Jones’, belong to this category. Besides these two types of writing, there has also been a significant development within the genre of ‘erotic novels’ (e.g. Nielegalne związki (2010) by Grażyna Plebanek, as well as other new novels such as Rdza (2008) by Ewa Berent and Naga (2010) by Izabela Szolc.) All these novels are quite diverse, and they all transgress the conventional way of depicting heterosexual sex scenes and erotic encounters. They also address in new ways the modern woman’s search for identity in modern Poland. Of particular interest in this type of literature is its depiction of cultural diversity on the one hand, and its local context on the other. Thus, my primary concern in analysing this newly emerging type of women’s writing is with the following question: To what extent do these writers consciously imitate ‘Western European’ models, and to what extent do they create their own local genre by responding to the needs of a culture in which sexuality is no longer a taboo topic?

  • ‘A Machine for Living’ : Urban Domesticity in Polish Literature and Cinema 1969–2008
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to study urban domesticity in Polish film and literature against the background of the political and social transformations that have taken place in recent decades. The study begins with the so-called belle époque of the Polish People’s Republic and the decade of Edward Gierek, continues through the political upheavals, the period of martial law, and the system transformation of 1989 and the two following decades, which have been marked by the introduction of democracy, global capitalism, consumerism etc.The primary sources consist of almost thirty literary and cinematic works from various genres covering a period of forty years – twenty before the system change, and twenty after. Their common denominator is their setting in the socialist housing projects (blokowisko).  The dissertation places itself in the field of geocriticism and literary/cinematic spatiality. The object of the study is the ̒social space’ (Henri Lefebvre) of the urban home, and the main analytical frames are spatial representations and narrative space, which are viewed as important in shaping both character and plot. The analysis also draws from cultural theory by Michel Foucault, Marc Augé, Mikhail Bakhtin, Mircea Eliade, and Loïc Wacquant. The dissertation detects a shift in the representations of the urban home that indicates that the home has become more private and secluded after 1989, also suggesting that a spatial and social marginalization of the socialist housing projects has occurred. These findings are interpreted as consistent with theories in human geography on changes in the perception and experience of space due to global paradigm shifts and changes in the production system.
