  • Microsecond switching of plasmonic nanorods in an all-fiber optofluidic component

    • As information technologies move from electron-to photon-based systems, the need to rapidly modulate light is of paramount importance. Here, we study the evolution of the electric-field-induced alignment of gold nanorods suspended in organic solvents. The experiments were performed using an all-fiber optofluidic device, which enables convenient interaction of light, electric fields, and the nanorod suspension. We demonstrate microsecond nanorod switching times, three orders of magnitude faster than a traditional Freederickcz-based liquid crystal alignment mechanism. We find that the dynamics of the alignment agrees well with the Einstein-Smoluchowski relationship, allowing for the determination of the rotational diffusion coefficient and polarizability anisotropy of the nanorods as well as the effective length of the ligands capping the nanorods. The ability to dynamically control the optical properties of these plasmonic suspensions coupled with the point-to-point delivery of light from the fiber component, as demonstrated in this work, may enable novel ultrafast optical switches, filters, displays, and spatial light modulators.

    • Tailored hydrogels mimicking the native extracellular environment could help overcome the high variability in outcomes within regenerative endodontics. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the chemokine-binding and antimicrobial polymer, chlorite-oxidized oxyamylose (COAM), on the microstructural properties of fibrin and self-assembling peptide (SAP) hydrogels. A further goal was to assess the influence of the microstructural differences between the hydrogels on the in vitro behavior of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). Structural and mechanical characterization of the hydrogels with and without COAM was performed by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to characterize their microstructure (roughness and fiber length, diameter, straightness, and alignment) and by nanoindentation to measure their stiffness (elastic modulus). Then, hDPSCs were encapsulated in hydrogels with and without COAM. Cell viability and circularity were determined using confocal microscopy, and proliferation was determined using DNA quantification. Inclusion of COAM did not alter the microstructure of the fibrin hydrogels at the fiber level while affecting the SAP hydrogel microstructure (homogeneity), leading to fiber aggregation. The stiffness of the SAP hydrogels was sevenfold higher than the fibrin hydrogels. The viability and attachment of hDPSCs were significantly higher in fibrin hydrogels than in SAP hydrogels. The DNA content was significantly affected by the hydrogel type and the presence of COAM. The microstructural stability after COAM inclusion and the favorable hDPSCs' response observed in fibrin hydrogels suggest this system as a promising carrier for COAM and application in endodontic regeneration.

  • A CO molecular gas wind 340 pc away from the Seyfert 2 nucleus in ESO420-G13 probes an elusive radio jet*

    • A prominent jet-driven outflow of CO(2-1) molecular gas is found along the kinematic minor axis of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO 420-G13, at a distance of 340-600 pc from the nucleus. The wind morphology resembles the characteristic funnel shape, formed by a highly collimated filamentary emission at the base, and likely traces the jet propagation through a tenuous medium, until a bifurcation point at 440 pc. Here the jet hits a dense molecular core and shatters, dispersing the molecular gas into several clumps and filaments within the expansion cone. We also trace the jet in ionised gas within the inner less than or similar to 340 pc using the [NeII](12.8 mu m) line emission, where the molecular gas follows a circular rotation pattern. The wind outflow carries a mass of similar to 8 x 10(6) M-circle dot at an average wind projected speed of similar to 160 km s(-1), which implies a mass outflow rate of similar to 14 M-circle dot yr(-1). Based on the structure of the outflow and the budget of energy and momentum, we discard radiation pressure from the active nucleus, star formation, and supernovae as possible launching mechanisms. ESO 420-G13 is the second case after NGC 1377 where a previously unknown jet is revealed through its interaction with the interstellar medium, suggesting that unknown jets in feeble radio nuclei might be more common than expected. Two possible jet-cloud configurations are discussed to explain an outflow at this distance from the AGN. The outflowing gas will likely not escape, thus a delay in the star formation rather than quenching is expected from this interaction, while the feedback effect would be confined within the central few hundred parsecs of the galaxy.

    • Mitigating and adapting to increasing flood risk driven by climate change and growing urbanization is still a challenge for humanity. Over the last decades, the Nature Based Solutions (NBS) approach has received increasing interest from governments, academia and society, but its implementation is still in its infancy. This volume presented an up-to-date compilation about the current knowledge on NBS regarding their potential to mitigate several types of floods recorded in different environments, the associated advantages and limitations, and the barriers affecting their wider implementation. This concluding chapter provides a synthesis of the main messages of the chapters included in this volume, and it highlights the relevant aspects that must be considered for an effective and broader application of NBS. In this regard, particular attention is given to the need to maximize their multifunctionality and to consider the transdisciplinary nature of the NBS approach.
