  • An eco-friendly, highly efficient, and transparent coating derived from guar gum and citric acid for flame retardant treatment of cotton fabrics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Biological Macromolecules. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0141-8130 .- 1879-0003. ; 253:Part 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • V.A highly efficient, bio-ecofriendly, and transparent flame retardant (FR) for cotton fabric was developed and deposited onto the cellulose skeletal structure of cotton fabric through a one-pot sol-gel process. The flame retardant functional coating is composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), guar gum (GG), citric acid (CA), and a negligible amount of catalyst. Cotton fabrics were impregnated with different concentrations of ammonium polyphosphate and guar gum, with citric acid as a crosslinking agent. The overall crosslinking and grafting process was proven by FTIR and XPS. Based on the results, the designed coating exhibits over 90 % transmittance in the visible region. A 15 g/m2 flame-retardant coating induces excellent flame retardant efficiency at ultra-low flame-retardant concentrations of less than 6.25 wt%. Only a 5.25 wt% flame retardant concentration demonstrated condensed phase action, which resulted in 58.5 % and 73.6 % reductions in the pHRR and THR, respectively. Moreover, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value showed a 74 % increase. The mechanical performance of FR coated cotton fibers was slightly reduced.

  • A novel cloud intrusion detection system using feature selection and classification
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Intelligent Information Technologies. - : IGI Global. - 1548-3657 .- 1548-3665. ; 11:4, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a new cloud intrusion detection system for detecting the intruders in a traditional hybrid virtualized, cloud environment. The paper introduces an effective feature selection algorithm called Temporal Constraint based on Feature Selection algorithm and also proposes a classification algorithm called hybrid decision tree. This hybrid decision tree has been developed by extending the Enhanced C4.5 algorithm an existing decision tree based classifier. Furthermore, the experiments conducted on the sample Cloud Intrusion Detection Datasets (CIDD) show that the proposed cloud intrusion detection system provides better detection accuracy than the existing work and reduces the false positive rate.

  • Developing a video expert panel as a reference standard to evaluate respiratory rate counting in paediatric pneumonia diagnosis: protocol for a cross-sectional study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMJ open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 12:11, s. e067389-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manual counting of respiratory rate (RR) in children is challenging for health workers and can result in misdiagnosis of pneumonia. Some novel RR counting devices automate the counting of RR and classification of fast breathing. The absence of an appropriate reference standard to evaluate the performance of these devices is a challenge. If good quality videos could be captured, with RR interpretation from these videos systematically conducted by an expert panel, it could act as a reference standard. This study is designed to develop a video expert panel (VEP) as a reference standard to evaluate RR counting for identifying pneumonia in children. Methods and analysisUsing a cross-sectional design, we will enrol children aged 0–59 months presenting with suspected pneumonia at different levels of health facilities in Dhaka and Sylhet, Bangladesh. We will videorecord a physician/health worker counting RR manually and also using an automated RR counter (Children’s Automated Respiration Monitor) from each child. We will establish a standard operating procedure for capturing quality videos, make a set of reference videos, and train and standardise the VEP members using the reference videos. After that, we will assess the performance of the VEP as a reference standard to evaluate RR counting. We will calculate the mean difference and proportions of agreement within±2 breaths per minute and create Bland-Altman plots with limits of agreement between VEP members.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol was approved by the National Research Ethics Committee of Bangladesh Medical Research Council, Bangladesh (registration number: 39315022021) and Edinburgh Medical School Research Ethics Committee (EMREC), Edinburgh, UK (REC Reference: 21-EMREC-040). Dissemination of the study findings will be through conference presentations and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • Monitoring and assessment of heavy metal contamination in surface water of selected rivers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Geocarto International. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1010-6049 .- 1752-0762. ; 38:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current research aimed to monitor and assess the heavy metal contamination in the surface water of 53 sampling sites along the selected rivers using principal component analysis and cluster analysis. For this purpose, both physiochemical parameters such as the temperature (T), the potential of hydrogen (pH), total dissolved solids (TDS) and electroconductivity (EC), and heavy metals such as iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) are analyzed as potential water contaminants. The average values of pH, TDS, EC and T are found at 7.75, 70.89 mg/L, 139.11 µs/cm and 20.29 °C, respectively, and heavy metals including Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, As and Fe are observed at 0.04, 0.04, 0.04, 0.03, 0.001 and 0.04 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, it is found that in both rivers hazardous metals, including Cr (100%), Cd (92.30%), Pb (100%), Ni (100%) and Fe (91%), exceed the permissible limits of the WHO.

  • Efficacy, biocompatibility and degradability of carbon nanoparticles for photothermal therapy of lung cancer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nanomedicine (London, England). - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1748-6963 .- 1743-5889. ; 16:9, s. 689-707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To investigate near infrared-induced phototoxicity toward lung cancer cells, and the biodegradability and effect on immune cells of glucose-derived carbon nanoparticles (CNPs). Methods: The human A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell line was used as a model to study the phototoxicity of CNPs. The biodegradability and the effect on immune cells was demonstrated in primary human neutrophils and macrophages. Results: Near infrared-activated CNPs elicited rapid cell death, characterized by the elevation of heat shock proteins and the induction of DNA damage. CNPs were found to be noncytotoxic toward primary human macrophages and were susceptible to biodegradation when cocultured with human neutrophils. Conclusions: Our results identify CNPs as promising platforms for photothermal therapy of lung cancer.
