  • Optionsprogram för anställda : en studie av svenska börsföretag
  • 2001
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An important strategic question for companies today is how to recruit, motivate and retain employees. It is becoming more important to consider the incentive programs in the valuation process of companies. Recent studies show that employee stock option plans are more commonly used in Swedish companies than earlier. However, there are few studies about how employee stock options influence company performance and affect employees. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the awareness of what the introduction of an employee stock option plan means, both from a management perspective and from the employees’ perspective. There are many different kinds of stock option plans and the plans can vary in terms of type of options, time to expiry, exercise price and tax consequences. This study started with a pre-study of which types of employee stock option plans that are used in Swedish companies. A closer study was then carried out in four companies in different industries with different stock option plans. The motives for introducing employee stock option plans can be divided into five categories: personnel motives, incentive motives, salary motives, accounting motives and tax motives. The case studies show how motives for option plans can be dependent on different circumstances within the companies. Further, the study also shows that the consequences of the stock option plans varies according to factors such as motives, design of the stock option plan, share price performance and other context factors. Context factors that could have an effect are the company’s business, organisational structure, corporate culture and experiences from employee stock options in the industry, employees’ education and tax rules. The consequences for the company are also dependent on how the employees react to the options. To be able to estimate what an employee stock option plan means for the company, all these factors must be taken under consideration. Further one must take into account the costs for the stock options such as dilution effects, hedging costs, personnel costs and costs for designing the program.

  • The value of proprietary and shared information technology
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Information Systems. - 1746-0972 .- 1746-0980. ; 1:4, s. 463-474

    • There is an ongoing debate about the effects of IT investments, and this paper will follow on this debate by discussing the effects of IT investments on productivity as well as the strategic potential of IT. Based on empirical studies on two Swedish value chains, the grocery distribution and the logging industry, this paper discusses the following questions: • Are investments in shared solutions, rather than proprietary solutions, providing the primary contribution to productivity gains? • Are shared solutions contributing to competitive advantage? • Is competitive advantage achieved through the information generated in shared solutions? The results are supported by other empirical studies within the IToP (Impact of IT on Productivity) research programme of Linköping University, Sweden. Copyright © 2006 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • Beyond IT and Productivity : Effects of Digitized Information Flows in Grocery Distribution
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last decades organizations have made large investments in Information Technology (IT). The effects of these investments have been studied in business and academic communities over the years. A large amount of research has been conducted on the relation between the investments in IT and productivity growth. Productivity is a central measure of national and organizational success and is often considered in economic decisionmaking. Researchers have however found it difficult to present a clear-cut answer to the effect of IT investments on productivity growth; an inability defined as the productivity paradox.Within the Impact of IT on Productivity (ITOP) research program the relevance of the productivity measure as an indicator of the value of IT is questionned. IT has over the years replaced physical interfaces with digital and in this way enabled new ways to process information. A retrospective research approach is therefore applied where the effects of digitized information flows are studied within specific organizational settings. In this thesis the effects of digitized information flows within Swedish grocery distribution are studied. A comprehensive presentation of the development is first conducted and three focal areas are thereafter presented. These describe supply chain information flows including order information, information on new items and analysis of point-of-sales information. The presentation of the focal areas identifies a number of effects from the digitization of information flows. The effects are analyzed according to a predefined analytical framework. The effects are divided into five categories and are thereafter evaluated when it comes to potential for generating value. The study shows that the digitization of information flows has generated numerous, multifaceted effects. Automational, informational, transformational, consumer surplus and other effects are observed. They are difficult to evaluate using a single ndicator. Specific indicators that are closely related to the effects can however be defined. The study also concludes that the productivity measure does not capture all positive effects generated by digitized information flows.

  • Relationships among ERP post-implementation success constructs : An analysis at the organizational level
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Computers in human behavior. - : Elsevier BV. - 0747-5632 .- 1873-7692. ; 26:5, s. 1136-1148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems implementation success factors have been widely researched, however, few have investigated ERP post-implementation success in organizational contexts. The paucity of research Into ERP system success evaluations partly motivates this research To that end, the objective of this study is twofold First, it primarily investigates the relationships among six constructs or dimensions in a respecified ERP system success measurement model, which was developed from prior relevant frameworks. Second, this research adds to the body of knowledge in the information system (IS) success evaluation domain, especially with its focus on ERP packages The extended ERP system success model was tested using data collected in a cross-sectional field survey of 109 firms in two European countries Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test six relevant hypotheses. The SEM results showed that five out of the six hypotheses have significant, positive associations. Namely, the constructs of System Quality, Service Quality, Individual Impact, Workgroup Impact, and Organizational Impact have strong relevance in ERP success conceptualization, whereas Information Quality does not, at least, in the context of our data. The pertinence of the study's findings for IS success evaluation as well as its implications for practice and research are discussed.

  • Information technology strategy and alignment issues in health care organizations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Health Care Management Review. - : Lippincot Williams. - 0361-6274 .- 1550-5030. ; 38:3, s. 188-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Information technology (IT) plays a key role in public health care management because it could improve quality, efficiency, and patient care. Researchers and practitioners repeatedly contend that a health care organization's information systems strategy should be aligned with its objectives and strategies, a notion commonly known as IT alignment.Purpose: Actor-related IT alignment issues in health care institutions were explored in this study. More specifically, it explores the possibility of moving beyond the current IT alignment perspective and, in so doing, explores whether IT alignment-as currently conceptualized in the dominant body of research-is sufficient for attaining improved quality, efficiency, and patient care in health care organizations. Methods: The findings are based on a qualitative and longitudinal study of six health care organizations in the Stockholm metropolitan area. The empirical data were gathered over the 2005-2011 period from interviews, a focus group, observations, and archival material.Findings: The data suggest recurrent misalignments between IT strategy and organizational strategy and operations due to the failure to deconstruct the IT artifact and to the existence of various levels of IT maturity. Conclusions: A more complex picture of IT alignment in health care that goes beyond the current perspective is being offered by this study. It argues that the previously common way of handling IT as a single artifact and applying one IT strategy to the entire organizational system is obsolete.Managerial Implications: The article suggests that considerable benefits can be gained by assessing IT maturity and its impact on IT alignment. The article also shows that there are different kinds of IT in medical care that requires diverse decisions, investments, prioritizations, and implementation approaches.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • n this final chapter we discuss the book’s principal conclusions based on its empirical, theoretical and practical contributions. This is done in six subsections, each focusing on a specific issue. In the first section, we discuss the significance of strategic congruence and integrated control; in the second, the importance of the environment for internal changes and competitive advantage, as well as performance. We devote the third section to the control mix, the fourth to the role of IT systems in creating strategic congruence and integrated control. Then, in the fifth section, we treat questions of methodology before going on to the sixth subsection, where we conclude with a discussion on central issues where further research is needed. We would advise the reader that as the sections are clearly interlinked, certain discussions recur in several places in the chapter.
