  • Isomeric Mirror States as Probes for Effective Charges in the Lower pf Shell
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 38:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the fragmentation of a 550 MeV u(-1)primary beam of Ni-58, time-and energy-correlated gamma decays from isomeric states in neutron-deficient nuclei in the 1f(7/2) shell have been identified using the GSI fragment separator in combination with the RISING Ge-detector array. The results on isomers in the mirror pairs Ti-43(22)21-Sc-43(21)22 (I-pi = 3/2(+) and 19/2(-)), Cr-45(24)21-Sc-45(21)24 (I-pi = 3/2(+)) and V-45(23)22-Ti-45(22)23 (I-pi = 3/2(-)) are discussed in the framework of large scale pf and sdpf shell-model calculations, the former in conjunction with isospin symmetry breaking effects with emphasis on effective charges.

  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal. Special Topics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1951-6355 .- 1951-6401. ; 150, s. 319-320

    • The RISING (Rare ISotope INvestigations at GSI) project constitutes a major pan-european initiative to study nuclear structure in exotic nuclei. A brief outline of the technical details specific to studies of isomeric decays following relativistic projectile fragmentation reactions is presented.

  • Robust decision-making under severe uncertainty for conservation management
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Ecological Applications. - : Wiley. - 1051-0761. ; 15:4, s. 1471-1477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In-conservation biology it is necessary to make management decisions for endangered and threatened species under severe uncertainty. Failure to acknowledge and treat uncertainty can lead to poor decisions. To illustrate the importance of considering uncertainty, we reanalyze a decision problem for the Sumatran rhino, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, using information-gap theory to propagate uncertainties and to rank management options. Rather than requiring information about the extent of parameter uncertainty at the outset, information-gap theory addresses the question of how much uncertainty can be tolerated before our decision would change. It assesses the robustness of decisions in the face of severe uncertainty. We show that different management decisions may result when uncertainty in utilities and probabilities are considered in decision-making problems. We highlight the importance of a full assessment of uncertainty in conservation management decisions to avoid, as much as possible, undesirable outcomes.

  • Evidence for an Isomeric 3/2- State in 53Co
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 36:2, s. 131-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation of a 550MeV/u primary beam of Ni-58 on a Be-9 target has been used to measure time-and energy-correlated gamma decays following the implantation of event-by-event discriminated secondary fragments into a Be-9 stopper plate. A new isomeric gamma decay with T-1/2 = 14(6 4) ns and E-gamma = 646.2(2) keV is observed and attributed to the decay of the yrast 3/2-state in Co-53(27)26. This short-lived isomeric state has been populated by means of nuclear reactions during the stopping process of the secondary fragments. The experimental findings are discussed in the framework of large-scale spherical shell model calculations in conjunction with isospin symmetry-breaking residual interactions for the A = 53, Tz = +/- 1/2 mirror nuclei Co-53 and Fe-53.

  • 16(+) Spin-Gap Isomer in (96)Cd
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 107:17, s. 172502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A beta-decaying high-spin isomer in (96)Cd, with a half-life T(1/2) = 0.29(-0.10)(+0.11) s, has been established in a stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at GSI (RISING) experiment. The nuclei were produced using the fragmentation of a primary beam of (124)Xe on a (9)Be target. From the half-life and the observed gamma decays in the daughter nucleus, (96)Ag, we conclude that the beta-decaying state is the long predicted 16(+) "spin-gap'' isomer. Shell-model calculations, using the Gross-Frenkel interaction and the pi nu(p(1/2,)g(9/2)) model space, show that the isoscalar component of the neutron-proton interaction is essential to explain the origin of the isomer. Core excitations across the N = Z = 50 gaps and the Gamow-Teller strength, Bd(GT) distributions have been studied via large-scale shell-model calculations using the pi nu(g, d, s) model space to compare with the experimental B(GT) value obtained from the half-life of the isomer.

  • Influence of the np interaction on the beta decay of Pd-94
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 86:4, s. 041301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results from stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at the GSI (RISING) experiment based on the detection of gamma-ray transitions following the beta decay of Pd-94. A comparison between the measured low-lying level scheme of Rh-94 and the prediction from shell-model calculations reveals the important roles of the g(7/2) and g(9/2) orbitals in explaining the structural features. The low values of the Gamow-Teller strengths B(GT) can be attributed to the influence of the neutron-proton interaction, which gives rise to an increased seniority mixing for the nuclear states, thereby leading to a fragmentation of the strength to several daughter levels. These results provide further strong indications that Pd-94 resides in the middle of a structural transition region in the Pd isotopes as the N = Z line is approached.
