  • How can Learning Study be introduced into the academic system? An application study in Swedish Higher Education
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) International Conference, 1-3 december, 2008, Hong Kong Institute of Higher Education, Hong Kong, China.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first aim of the study is to investigate the possibilities to change the academic lecture in the Swedish higher education into a Learning Study. The second aim is to introduce Learning Study in undergraduate education as a way to enhance students’ qualitatively different ways of understanding the defined learning object in two different teaching conditions. The constraints of the Swedish Higher Education system is discussed and elaborated in the design of the presented study. The theoretical frame of the study is the variation theory, a general learning theory of the specific, which sets out to uncover the different ways in which students’ experience the learning object (Pang and Marton, 2003; Marton and Tsui, 2004; Lo et al., 2005; Marton and Pang, 2006). The teachers in three prescribed accounting courses in accounting were introduced in recurrent seminars to theories of learning, the Lesson Study and the Learning Study as different learning conditions. Then teachers have to plan how to apply the Learning Study Cycle and to select delimited content as learning objects in the three courses. Two groups of students (about 200 in each) were selected, a “target group” of students admitted 2005 and a “comparison group” admitted in 2004 to the undergraduate three year programme in Business. Students’ achievements in the three courses were collected during written examination in the end of each course, for both groups. The target group’s examination results were significantly much higher than the comparison group’s in each of the three courses. Therefore, results imply that the scientific implications refer to students’ awareness of critical aspects of the learning object and how these are presented by the teacher. Educational implications have reference to empirical grounded didactic problems, reorganized curriculum and to the learning and the teaching opportunities offered the students. The results show that it is possible to introduce the Learning Study adapted to Swedish higher education. Results illustrate the benefits and the opportunities of teaching, when variation theory is used as a vehicle to enhance students’ learning outcomes. Even if the content of the study is specific, the Learning Study is possible to use in various subjects.

  • Integration - A polyphonic concept in cross-border acquisitions
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: The ICFAI Journal of Mergers & Acquisitions, Hyderabad, India: ICFAI University Press. - 0972-9232. ; 2:4, s. 42-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An interpretative qualitative method is used for researching and exploring the qualitative differences in meaning making of a concept in the integration processes of two Nordic across-border acquisitions. The social construction of the meaning of a concept is investigated from a socio-cultural discursive perspective. In semi-structured interviews a specific question is used to reveal the managers ways of making sense of the concept integration, in two Nordic acquisitions. The results indicate interesting differences in meaning making between Swedish and Norwegian managers and Danish managers. The analysis, depict the meanings ascribed to the concept, in different categories. The variation of managers experiences range from concrete actions to strategic experiences of the integration processes. On management level, these variations in meaning making of a single concept can cause serious misunderstandings, misinterpretations and different language problems in mergers and cross-border acquisitions. The study contributes first to the introduction of a new qualitative, explorative research approach aiming at describing the variation of qualitative differences in the meaning ascribed to the concept. Second, it contributes to broadening our understanding of the situated and contextualized character of talk-in-interaction in social practices. It is argued that the variation in ways of meaning making, on the one hand, is related to individual differences in competence and training among managers and, on the other hand, to corporate factors. Findings can be used as a basis for further research into discourse and communication processes from a functional language perspective in social practices for example organizational change processes, mergers and acquisitions.

  • "Integration" - a polyphonic concept in merging companies
  • 2004
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this study a new method for researching the qualitative differences in meaning making of a concept is introduced to clarify how managers in two merger cases differ in the way they make sense of the ongoing process. A discursive perspective is used to focus on the social construction of the meaning of integration, a concept frequently used and often taken for granted in national and international post merger and post acquisitions studies. This general problem, how we understand and interpret a word, the concept integration has been studied in the context of two Scandinavian acquisitions. The claim is that several language forms can be used to express the same meaning of a concept as well as the same words can be used to express differing meanings, depending on the actors understanding of the words. The findings illuminate the qualitative differences among managers' ways of making sense of this concept in four categories of description. It can be argued that the variation in understandings on the one hand is related to the referential aspects, the meaning aspect, and on the other hand to the structural aspects of the concept.

  • Managing Accountability: Exploring Reasoning in a Management Team
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article deals with a sociocultural perspective on dialogue and communication in analyzing the actors´ ways of meaning making in talk as action in a management team meeting. It investigates the potential of the dialogical approach for studying talk and communication. The aim of the paper is to investigate the understanding of institutional categorising practices and rhetorical strategies used in a decision making process. Categorising practice is delimited to a "sale and lease back case" an example of institutional reasoning, argumentation and decision-making. Data are generated from a video recorded management meeting and participant observations. Findings frequently indicate the team members´ mobilization of rhetorical strategies and of institutional categories as flexible tools in re-contextualisation and negotiation of the issue in question. In contrast with prior studies of integration processes, after mergers and acquisitions, the results illustrate the complexity of actors´ ways of meaning making of actions in a management team meeting.

  • Members' Sensemaking in a Multi-Professional Team
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Organization and Management. - 1477-7266. ; 26:5, s. 605-620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate sensemaking as interaction among team members in a multi-professional team setting in a new public management context at a Swedish Child and Youth Psychiatric Unit. Design/methodology/approach – A discursive pragmatic approach grounded in ethnomethodology is taken in the analysis of a treatment conference (TC). In order to interpret and understand the multi-voiced complexity of discourse and of talk-in-interaction, the authors use dialogism in the analysis of the members’ sensemaking processes. The analysis is based on the theoretical assumption that language and texts are the primary tools actors use to comprehend the social reality and to make sense of their multi-professional discussions. Health care managers are offered insights, derived from theory and empirical evidence, into how professionals’ communications influence multi-professional cooperation. The team leader and members are interviewed before and after the observed TC. Findings – Team members create their identities and positions in the group by interpreting and “misinterpreting” talk-in-interaction. The analyses reveal the ways the team members relate to their treatment methods in the discussion of a patient; advocating a treatment method means that the team member and the method are intertwined. Practical implications – The findings may be valuable to health care professionals and managers working in teams by showing them how to achieve greater cooperation through the use of verbal abilities. Originality/value – The findings and methods contribute to the international research on cooperation problems in multi-professional teams and to the empirical research on institutional discourse through text and talk.
