  • Electron-impact fragmentation of Cl-2(-)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 72:4, s. 042708-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A merged beam technique has been used to investigate the fragmentation of the Cl-2(-) ion in collisions with electrons over an energy range of 0-200 eV. We have measured absolute cross sections for detachment, detachment plus dissociation and dissociation processes. Over the energy range studied, the dominant breakup mechanism is dissociation. Dissociation is relatively enhanced in the e(-)+Cl-2(-) collision system due to the suppression of the normally dominant detachment process, as a result of the large difference between the equilibrium internuclear distances of the Cl-2 and Cl-2(-) ground state potential curves. A prominent structure is observed just above the threshold in the Cl-+Cl+e(-) dissociation channel. It is proposed that the structure is a resonance associated with production and rapid decay of an excited state of the doubly charged Cl-2(-) ion. A plausible mechanism for production of the di-anionic state based on an excitation plus capture process is suggested.

  • EAICA : An energy-aware resource provisioning algorithm for Real-Time Cloud services
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, ETFA. - 9781509013142
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cloud computing is receiving an increasing attention when it comes to providing a wide range of cost-effective services. In this context, energy consumption of communication and computing resources contribute to a major portion of the cost of services. On the other hand, growing energy consumption not only results in a higher operational cost, but it also causes negative environmental impacts. A large number of cloud applications in, e.g., telecommunication, multimedia, and video gaming, have real-time requirements. A cloud computing system hosting such applications, that requires a strict timing guarantee for its provided services, is denoted a Real-Time Cloud (RTC). Minimizing energy consumption in a RTC is a complicated task as common methods that are used for decreasing energy consumption can potentially lead to timing violations. In this paper, we present an online energy-aware resource provisioning framework to reduce the deadline miss ratio for real-time cloud services. The proposed provisioning framework not only considers the energy consumption of servers but it also takes the energy consumption of the communication network into account, to provide a holistic solution. An extensive range of simulation results, based on real data, show a noticeable improvement regarding energy consumption while keeping the number of timing violations less than 1% in average.

  • Origins Space Telescope: Baseline mission concept
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems. - 2329-4221 .- 2329-4124. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Origins Space Telescope will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. How did galaxies evolve from the earliest galactic systems to those found in the Universe today? How do habitable planets form? How common are life-bearing worlds? To answer these alluring questions, Origins will operate at mid-and far-infrared (IR) wavelengths and offer powerful spectroscopic instruments and sensitivity three orders of magnitude better than that of the Herschel Space Observatory, the largest telescope flown in space to date. We describe the baseline concept for Origins recommended to the 2020 US Decadal Survey in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The baseline design includes a 5.9-m diameter telescope cryocooled to 4.5 K and equipped with three scientific instruments. A mid-infrared instrument (Mid-Infrared Spectrometer and Camera Transit spectrometer) will measure the spectra of transiting exoplanets in the 2.8 to 20 μm wavelength range and offer unprecedented spectrophotometric precision, enabling definitive exoplanet biosignature detections. The far-IR imager polarimeter will be able to survey thousands of square degrees with broadband imaging at 50 and 250 μm. The Origins Survey Spectrometer will cover wavelengths from 25 to 588 μm, making wide-area and deep spectroscopic surveys with spectral resolving power R ∼ 300, and pointed observations at R ∼ 40,000 and 300,000 with selectable instrument modes. Origins was designed to minimize complexity. The architecture is similar to that of the Spitzer Space Telescope and requires very few deployments after launch, while the cryothermal system design leverages James Webb Space Telescope technology and experience. A combination of current-state-of-the-art cryocoolers and next-generation detector technology will enable Origins' natural background-limited sensitivity.

    • Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only. The Origins Space Telescope (OST) will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. How did the universe evolve in response to its changing ingredients? How common are life-bearing planets? To accomplish its scientific objectives, OST will operate at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths and offer superlative sensitivity and new spectroscopic capabilities. The OST study team will present a scientifically compelling, executable mission concept to the 2020 Decadal Survey in Astrophysics. To understand the concept solution space, our team studied two alternative mission concepts. We report on the study approach and describe both of these concepts, give the rationale for major design decisions, and briefly describe the mission-enabling technology.

  • Local host response in the lower respiratory tract in nephropathia epidemica
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-1980 .- 0036-5548. ; 25:5, s. 639-646
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various lines of evidence suggest a respiratory route of transmission of nephropathia epidemica (NE). To study the response of the respiratory tract in NE, fiberoptic bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed in 5 patients in the acute phase of the disease. Compared to a reference group of 15 healthy individuals, BAL fluid of NE patients contained significantly higher total numbers of cells (p < 0.05) and significantly higher numbers of lysozyme-positive macrophages (p < 0.01), CD8+ T cells (p < 0.01), and natural killer (NK) cells (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in numbers of CD4+ T cells, B cells, or neutrophils. When blood samples of 16 patients were examined at various intervals after onset of NE, a significant decrease in the number of NK cells (p < 0.01) was found in the acute phase of the disease. The findings are compatible with the presence of a local host response in the lower respiratory tract to NE virus infection.

  • PHANGS–JWST First Results : Stellar-feedback-driven Excitation and Dissociation of Molecular Gas in the Starburst Ring of NGC 1365?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 944:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare embedded young massive star clusters (YMCs) to (sub-)millimeter line observations tracing the excitation and dissociation of molecular gas in the starburst ring of NGC 1365. This galaxy hosts one of the strongest nuclear starbursts and richest populations of YMCs within 20 Mpc. Here we combine near-/mid-IR PHANGS–JWST imaging with new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array multi-J CO (1–0, 2–1 and 4–3) and [C ı] (1–0) mapping, which we use to trace CO excitation via R42 = ICO(4−3)/ICO(2−1) and R21 = ICO(2−1)/ICO(1−0) and dissociation via RCICO = I[CI](1−0)/ICO(2−1) at 330 pc resolution. We find that the gas flowing into the starburst ring from northeast to southwest appears strongly affected by stellar feedback, showing decreased excitation (lower R42) and increased signatures of dissociation (higher RCICO) in the downstream regions. There, radiative-transfer modeling suggests that the molecular gas density decreases and temperature and [CI/CO] abundance ratio increase. We compare R42 and RCICO with local conditions across the regions and find that both correlate with near-IR 2 μm emission tracing the YMCs and with both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (11.3 μm) and dust continuum (21 μm) emission. In general, RCICO exhibits ∼0.1 dex tighter correlations than R42, suggesting C ı to be a more sensitive tracer of changing physical conditions in the NGC 1365 starburst than CO (4–3). Our results are consistent with a scenario where gas flows into the two arm regions along the bar, becomes condensed/shocked, forms YMCs, and then these YMCs heat and dissociate the gas.

  • Particle traps prevent adverse vascular and prothrombotic effects of diesel engine exhaust inhalation in men
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - 0009-7322 .- 1524-4539. ; 123:16, s. 1721-1728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: In controlled human exposure studies, diesel engine exhaust inhalation impairs vascular function and enhances thrombus formation. The aim of the present study was to establish whether an exhaust particle trap could prevent these adverse cardiovascular effects in men. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nineteen healthy volunteers (mean age, 25±3 years) were exposed to filtered air and diesel exhaust in the presence or absence of a particle trap for 1 hour in a randomized, double-blind, 3-way crossover trial. Bilateral forearm blood flow and plasma fibrinolytic factors were assessed with venous occlusion plethysmography and blood sampling during intra-arterial infusion of acetylcholine, bradykinin, sodium nitroprusside, and verapamil. Ex vivo thrombus formation was determined with the use of the Badimon chamber. Compared with filtered air, diesel exhaust inhalation was associated with reduced vasodilatation and increased ex vivo thrombus formation under both low- and high-shear conditions. The particle trap markedly reduced diesel exhaust particulate number (from 150 000 to 300 000/cm(3) to 30 to 300/cm(3); P<0.001) and mass (320±10 to 7.2±2.0 μg/m(3); P<0.001), and was associated with increased vasodilatation, reduced thrombus formation, and an increase in tissue-type plasminogen activator release. CONCLUSIONS: Exhaust particle traps are a highly efficient method of reducing particle emissions from diesel engines. With a range of surrogate measures, the use of a particle trap prevents several adverse cardiovascular effects of exhaust inhalation in men. Given these beneficial effects on biomarkers of cardiovascular health, the widespread use of particle traps on diesel-powered vehicles may have substantial public health benefits and reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease.

  • Respiratory Tract Deposition of Particles from Biomass Combustion
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Inhaled Particles X. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 151
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The respiratory tract deposition of particles from two types of biomass combustion was measured for 10 healthy subjects. The aerosol was extensively characterised. Model calculations of the deposition were made based on the particle properties. The results show that particle water absorption has substantial impact on deposition. The particles from biomass combustion obtained a size in the respiratory tract at which the deposition probability is close to its minimum.
