  • Colposcopic and histopathologic evaluation of women participating in population-based screening for human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid persistence
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Am J Obstet Gynecol. - : Elsevier BV. ; 193:3, s. 650-657
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of colposcopic and histopathological findings in women screened for cervical human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid persistence. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 12 527 women, aged 32 to 38 years old, attending the population-based cervical cancer screening program in Sweden were randomized 1:1 to mock testing or human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid testing by general primer 5+/6+ polymerase chain reaction and subsequent typing. Human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid-positive women with a normal Papanicolaou smear (n=341) and an equal number from the control group were human papillomavirus tested on average 19 months later. One hundred nineteen women with type-specific human papillomavirus persistence and 111 controls were referred to colposcopy, and 84.8% attended. RESULTS: Histopathology from colposcopically directed biopsies confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or 3 in 28 of 100 of the women with human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid persistence and in 2 of 95 among controls. CONCLUSION: Among women with normal Papanicolaou smear attending population-based screening, the positive predictive value of human papillomavirus deoxyribonucleic acid persistence for detection of biopsy-confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or 3 was 29%.

  • Ecological effects and management aspects of an exotic tree species : the case of lodgepole pine in Sweden
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Forest Ecology and Management. - 0378-1127 .- 1872-7042. ; 141:02-jan, s. 3-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The North American tree Pinus contorta var, latifolia was experimentally introduced in Sweden already in the 1920s, and has been used in Swedish forestry on a large scale since the 1970s. These plantations now cover 565,000 ha, mainly in the northern area. In this paper we summarize and discuss existing ecological knowledge of this species introduction. With regard to longterm sustainability we suggest management means to minimize harmful effects of the introduction on ecosystems. These include aspects of self dispersal, pests, ecosystem and landscape structures, and also ecological processes and biodiversity. We also focus on observed and possible interactions in the ecosystems. As Pinus contorta seeds are disseminated and trees regenerated outside initial plantations, this may have future bearings on biodiversity. We suggest a strategy which takes account of the uncertainty in predicting future ecological effects. The strategy includes areal restrictions and zones without Pinus contorta, but also to set up a monitoring program. Observations of adverse effects from the plantations would then give the possibility to adjust P. contorta management.

  • Transcatheter Intervention for Coarctation of the Aorta A Nordic Population-Based Registry With Long-Term Follow-Up
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Jacc-Cardiovascular Interventions. - : Elsevier BV. - 1936-8798 .- 1876-7605. ; 16:4, s. 444-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND Coarctation of the aorta (CoA), a congenital narrowing of the proximal descending thoracic aorta, is a relatively common form of congenital heart disease. Untreated significant CoA has a major impact on morbidity and mortality. In the past 3 decades, transcatheter intervention (TCI) for CoA has evolved as an alternative to surgery.OBJECTIVES The authors report on all TCIs for CoA performed from 2000 to 2016 in 4 countries covering 25 million inhabitants, with a mean follow-up duration of 6.9 years.METHODS During the study period, 683 interventions were performed on 542 patients.RESULTS The procedural success rate was 88%, with 9% considered partly successful. Complications at the intervention site occurred in 3.5% of interventions and at the access site in 3.5%. There was no in-hospital mortality. During follow-up, TCI for CoA reduced the presence of hypertension significantly from 73% to 34%, but despite this, many patients remained hypertensive and in need of continuous antihypertensive treatment. Moreover, 8% to 9% of patients needed aortic and/or aortic valve surgery during follow-up.CONCLUSIONS TCI for CoA can be performed with a low risk for complications. Lifetime follow-up after TCI for CoA seems warranted. (J Am Coll Cardiol Intv 2023;16:444-453) & COPY; 2023 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.
